A bit long but not enough to be tied back; wavy. He tries to slick it back, but it always gets tousled under his hat.

• Val is not just mute--he has no mouth, with smooth skin there instead. Due to this, he communicates via writing in a notebook or notepad or via text-to-speech.


• That being said, he was selectively mute before he made the deal. Even before losing his parents and being sent to the orphanage Val was a very quiet child, and ostracization and abuse at the orphanage didn't help. As an adult he rarely ever speaks, even to close friends like Katharine Kemper and George Marcelli , using either sign language or writing down his thoughts.

Val is of just below average height and has a lean, slender build. His hair and eyes are a similar shade of brown, and his hair is a bit long and wavy, usually squished down beneath a cap. His right eye is a glass one--it suffered vision loss when he was a child due to a cigarette burn and then was later stabbed during an investigation gone wrong, which damaged it badly enough to be removed.
In exchange for gaining the ability to tell if someone is telling the truth, Val traded away his mouth, leaving the skin there smooth and unbroken. Glasses are somewhere between a square and a circle in shape, and wire-rimmed.

On the very few occasions he speaks (pre-deal), Val's voice is quiet and a bit raspy from lack of use, but also very soft.
