Born to the mage hunters of Bauller's Gae, Lumin showed magic from an early age. At the time the mage hunters were more about taking down those they saw were being irresponsible with magic, and while The Crystal River Academy was controversial at that point his parents were still able to send him when he came of age.

Always hanging out in the library, when Lumin graduated he decided to stay and train to become the next librarian. His parents supported this until a few years later when The Collapse hit. After that they wanted him home, but Lumin could see what his home had become in the aftermath. He knew he would be expected to use his powers to hunt magic users, and perhaps worse they would want to squeeze him for information about the Academy to use against them.

Lumin didn't want that, so he refused. He went to the headmistress and told her everything, and she agreed to protect him. Part of that protection included making simulacrums to help out in the library, so that if anyone came looking they wouldn't be able to tell the real him from the others, and the simulacrums were enchanted with a self-destruct spell to be used if they should ever be captured.

Now Lumin doesn't often leave the library. If he needs things in town one of the others goes and gets it, he takes his meals in his office most of the time and sleeps in a special room to avoid detection. It's not the life he wanted, but managing the library keeps him busy and he feels like he's found a purpose in it which makes things at least a little better.
