Joy was actually born in Estana, but the town that she was born to no longer exists as it was destroyed in The Collapse. Her people moved over to Rothary soon after, finding home in Stonehallow where Joy lived for a few years before heading up to The Crystal River Academy to look for work. Her people needed money, and her skills in math were almost unmatched; in fact she had used them to help with rebuilding bits of Stonehallow that needed repairs when they moved in.

Needing someone with that particular skillset the Academy was more than happy to hire her on at that point and she's served as a teacher ever since. She lives a fairly simple life, sending as much money back to her people as possible to help with efforts to rebuild, establish what they need to survive, and generally continue to thrive.
