"The longer/more he uses his ability, the less sane he is. If he uses it too much/too long, then he can barely tell what is real and what is imaginary. [...] The easiest way to tell if he had used his ability is his arms. He always has at his fingertips (no matter how long ago he used his ability) this black substance that looks and feels like charcoal, however it never leaves behind a residue. If he uses his ability, it's slowly goes up his arm and if he controls multiple shadows at once or larger shadows it spreads faster. As long as it doesn't go past his wrists (about 10 minutes with one small shadow under his control) he will not have any hallucinations. But if it spreads past his elbows, he will be at risk of never having it go back down and the hallucinations will never go away." - slainmarshmellow
