Samael and Cynric are twins, with Samael being the older of the two, born to Faina Parker, Conductress of the Hellion Faction, and Viktor Ansel, Alpha of Lookout Mountain.

Samael is the stepson of Darek Masters and step brother of Michal and Leon Masters, although he has been raised with them nearly his entire life and basically sees them as father and brothers. Samael and Michal are also best friends and rivals in a friendly, brotherly competitive way.

Through his birth father's family, Samael is the younger half-brother of Allison Ansel. A deal between Faina and Allison's mother Adelaide, after the disappearance of his father, meant that the children were raised together; although the bond was more like cousins than half-siblings.

It was forced as part of the deal between Faina and Viktor that the twins have Viktor's last name, as a way to prove their legitimacy. It is the reason their last name differs from their mother and stepfamily. They are not allowed to change it unless Lookout Mountain somehow passes out of the Ansel family's hands and they lose their claim to the throne. Because without the name, both Samael and Cynric would lose their birthright claim to Lookout Mountain.

Sam is named after Samael Gideon, Faina's first love who she believes to be dead, but this namesake is a secret to everyone but Darek. Sam has never been curious enough to ask.
