Tradition in Halberton among the noble families for generations has always been that the first female child born takes over the family unless there are other circumstances involved.

He had an older sister, and growing up he saw how she was treated as special while he was ignored and left to his own devices. Then a horrible accident took her life and suddenly his parents were scrambling to try to have another daughter. In the meantime Ranadin took charge, the only heir to the family and more than qualified to do so. But his parents have always made it clear that should they manage to have another daughter she would take over when she came of age no matter how much work he had put into it.

Even though he is now an adult, that possibility still remains. All the work Ranadin has put in through his life could be undone in a moment, which is especially frustrating given that the Bloodfang family is in charge of the city's military might; not just the standing army but also the city guard and anyone else officially trained to fight on the city's behalf. He tends to take this out on everyone else around him, playing it off as aggression to hide how insecure his position is.
