Nyri was born to a minor noble family in Bellmore, the gnomes having very little say in the city's politics but still influential enough in areas of magical study and such to warrant giving them a position of even minor power.

Still, Nyri's life was never an easy one. She was held to the highest standards from the start, and every time she messed up she was punished to show her that failure would not be tolerated. This, of course, only led to her to learn how to cover up her failures instead of learning from them and work to fix things before anyone else found out she screwed up.

Diana Hawthorne caught wind of this, having always had her eye on the Silverthread family since she suspected the abuse. One of her people had been inside for some time posing as house staff, and while they did the job well they also kept an eye on Nyri and acted as a confidant - talking to her and getting a handle on her mental health as well as if she wanted out of that life.

As soon as Nyri started saying she hated her parents and expressing thoughts of suicide around the age of 10 the agent was swift to contact Diana for an emergency extraction. Diana agreed, and within a week Nyri had been spirited away to the manor. There she was allowed to foster her love of alchemy, to practice, to learn that screwing up wasn't the end all but rather a learning opportunity to do better the next time.

Too afraid of her family finding her, Nyri wanted to stay with Diana indefinitely. And of course Diana understood, many of her kids had felt that way over the years, but there simply weren't enough resources to let everyone stay and doing so would simply draw too much attention. So instead Diana used her network to look for places in need of an alchemist.

Despite their usual policy of not having adult outsiders to influence their relatively isolated life The Zenith was in need of an alchemist to help mostly on the medical side of things. Diana made the arrangements, made sure Nyri knew what was expected of her, and when everything was agreed upon off the gnome went.

She's served the monastic order since, feeling secure in their isolation and making sure to keep her head down and do her job. She's paid well, kept safe, and while she misses the outside world and Diana and her siblings she also knows why she's not allowed that communication and has focused instead on trying to make friends among the monks.
