He was born of a race of Octopus-looking aliens (Chimera Sui Generis), but he has polymorphic abilities that he can't control, causing him to 'melt' or 'shift' through various alien species at complete random.
He uses a type of genetic-locking 'watch' to assist in holding and changing his physical appearance. It helps keep him locked in a form instead of constantly shifting.
