The factories were built by the Duskwing Syndicates in order to build what the Duskwing Syndicates considered their ultimate weapon, the Sentinels. Early on, the Duskwing Syndicates discovered the ability to harness water into electricity and thus built all of their factories near lakes and rivers, damming up the water if need be to ensure that their hydrogenerators would work.

In the process of building their factories and creating the Sentinels, the Duskwing Syndicates cleared out surrounding forests and plains, using the lumber they cut down and the stone and metal they mined as fuel and materials. Byproducts of that production polluted the environment, killing animals and humans as well as displacing them from their habitats.

As the factories grew larger, the Duskwing Syndicates realized that they alone did not have enough manpower to build such large weapons, much less on the large scale they desired. Thus, they took to overtaking towns and villages with lumber and mining industries to divert labor and resources to their technologies and conscripting other humans as soldiers or forcing them to work in their factories and work camps. The Duskwing Syndicates were also ordered to execute those who were too disabled, ill, or weak to work, before feeding their corpses to their hungry pactbeasts and Guardians.
