I'd like to know how fashion was affected by different classes in society (from every culture you can think of) between 1770 and 1810. What kinds of things did each person wear?
between 1770 and the early 1790s in (mostly) Europe upper class women had those giant Marie Antoinette style dresses, since they could afford to have them made. (I have pictures if you don't know what I mean) Men had the big ole tailcoats and knee breeches with waistcoats and cravats and stockings with bucked shoes. Lower class women had simpler dresses, still with petticoats but not as many and they were more round than the upper classes. Usually they wore aprons over them, and sometimes those like round puffy hats. I'm not great at descriptions so lmk if you want pictures.
Mid 1790s people started getting into the Greeks again and upper class women's (mostly) fashion switched and petticoats were mostly gone, so were corsets, and dresses tended to look like nightgowns with high waists and square necklines and little puffy sleeves. Men's stayed pretty much the same, if somewhat simpler until the end of the century and in the very early 1800s pants got longer and the cuts of the coats changed slightly. Puffy sleeves, cravats, and uncomfortably high collars abounded. Lower class women's fashion stayed pretty much how it was until about 1806 and then it got more similar to the upper classes, which were getting marginally less nightgownish. They didn't REALLY start looking like day clothes until about 1813 but yeah! Again, pictures are worth more than words, so lmk!!
This was so detailed and awesome, thank you! This helps me a lot. And I would LOVE pictures. Show me whatchu got.
Can I get a crash course on 1850s European fasion please?
the 1850s were when the bigass hoop skirts were in fashion! lots of ruffles/layers toward the beginning/middle, and then they started to smooth things out a bit at the end. Bell sleeves/pagoda sleeves were really common, and cap sleeves for evening dresses, and shawls were a big thing worn as an obtuse triangle with the widest point at the back and the other two wrapped around the shoulders or occasionally tucked into the bodice. Also, corsets were getting to be real bad then, with the wasp waist and the waist flared to help with the hoops. I'm pretty sure it was 1853 (don't quote me on this I don't remember where I heard it) that that one girl's corset rib snapped bc it was too tight and punctured her lung but her waist was 16 inches around in her coffin.
Men were pretty boring on the majoity.. There were all the wild fads of the dandies every year, but I don't know specifics for the 50s. For the most part though it was just straight leg pants, pretty high waistcoats that either matched or contrasted the pants, bowties, and either single or double breasted overcoats. And top hats and canes, for those who could afford them.
also, important: THE 1850s ARE NOT REGENCY. THEY'RE EARLY VICTORIAN. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE.
Thanks so much!
How about 1870-90s fashion? (Specifically English, American, Chinese, and Indian) What did the different classes of people wear?
What do you know about fashion in the Roaring 20's? I'd like to know about higher class and lower class if you can tell me
hey so like, what was the fashion styles on the Oregon trail? Like what did people wear? (it was in the 1840's btw)
