In one of my arcs, The MMC turns out to be a vessel for a kitsune, which make him a target of a gang that is ran by his abusive father and the means they use to get him is his family
It's main theme is abuse and overcoming it
The problem is that I has problems writing how to make sense of him being a kitsune and the gang even know he is such and making the characters likable (ex. Jax's mom is a timid nervous wreck and I want to avoid readers seeing her as weak and whiny (not that I view her like that but I'm not to make the audience seen as such) |
Jax's sister is pessimistic, snarky and has some victim-blamey attitudes towards her mother and I'm trying not to her make an insufferable bitch |
His brother is an nihilistic and overtly optimistic man and tends to be high on prescription drugs half the time and I'm not to make seem like a complete and utter idiot |
Plus his father while intentionally unlikable seeing that I'm basing him off my least favorite trope but I don't want to seem like I'm trying too hard to make him evil and awful piece human garbage, even if I HATE him so |
Also Sophie seems to get sidelined despite being the main protagonist of the the entire but so how to put magic incident powers to use
So yeah, this arc is bit of a mess
Why does the gang want him? How much do they know of magic? How did they even get involved in gang activity?
For the mother: Why is she like that? What has happened in her life to transform her? Maybe she wasn't like this before.
For the sister: Show that she loves him. Have her attempt and fail to be flippant when she tells him to take care. Make it known to the audience that she sacrifices for him without letting him know what she does. Have her do something to protect him, maybe shrugging it off with a "That's what family does you idiot."
For the brother: Make his secretly more scared than anyone. His high is his escape, without it he would be too scared to keep going. Show that once. A too long pause in conversation, an emotional outbreak that he tries to pretend was nothing. Things like that.
For the father: Make sure he has a motive. Show one point of regret that he shoves back down again.
Sophie: Why does she even exist in the first place? If she adds enough to the story keep her. If she makes the story move and things still make sense, she is invaluable.
Why does the gang want him? I guess for his kitsune powers
How much do they know of magic? Well the dad learned that the mother is a half-kitsune from her mother during their relationship and heard that Jax got a heart transplant from their grandmother
How did they even get involved in gang activity? Well the father turned to smuggling to get money since he was kicked out the house, the brother was dragged by his dad and his sister ended up being groomed by a member from the gang
For the mother: Why is she like that? While she was always shy when she was young, she become so timid due her ex husband beating and gas lighting her and losing her children (one to divorce and the other one got kidnapped)
Sophie: Why does she even exist in the first place? This plot is basically one out the 5 arcs and she's the protagonist and her job is basically to solve supernatural incidents
