"McKenna, I need you at the hospital. Something happened." Sadie replied. A nurse came up to Sadie. She was silent for a moment, then said, loud enough for McKenna and Melissa to hear, "Sadie, they um…their injuries were too bad. I'm sorry." Sadie but her lip, her breaths coming out in the way that they do when someone is trying not to cry. (Again weird description I have no other way to describe it)
"Okay, I'll be there as soon as I can," McKenna assured her frantic friend.
"Sadie, I'm coming. I have to hang up to drive, but I'm be right there." Melissa hung up and tossed her phone into the drivers seat before running the engine and driving quickly to the hospital.
Sadie put her phone down on the seat next to her and put her head in her hands, sobbing. Why this, why now?
As soon as she was off the phone, McKenna grabbed what she needed and drove to the hospital. She looked around for Sadie when she arrived.
Sadie was sitting in a visible spot, by the wall near the emergency rooms. She was wearing black leggings, black tennis shoes, and a dark blue hoodie.
McKenna rushed over to her friend as soon as she saw her.
"Hey, hey, what's up? What's wrong?" she asked gently, sitting down next to her.
Melissa burst in and spotted Sadie. She immediately sat down beside her and hugged her tightly. "Shh… shh…" She said, stroking her hair
"W-When they were c-coming back f-from t-their trip the c-car g-got fli-flipped and their in-injuries w-we're too b-bad." Sadie managed, knowing that her friends would know how she was talking about.
McKenna's eyes widened as she whispered, "No," under her breath. She closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly, then opened them again to look at Sadie.
"I'm so sorry," she said. "I– I understand how you must feel right now. Scared, devastated, like your heart was just ripped out of your chest while you were still alive and breathing.
But don't worry. Mel (is that okay?) and I are here for you. You can always come talk to me, or just come over to cry."
Melissa nodded and rubbed Sadie's back gently. "Yeah. We're always here, God's always here. You're covered Sad." ( S-AY-d)
Sadie nodded, learning into Melissa's hug. "Promise?"
"We promise," McKenna said, looking over at Melissa and nodding at her.
"Always," Melissa assured her friend, nodding back at McKenna.
Sadie nodded. "O-Okay. C-Can we l-leave now?"
McKenna looked back at Sadie, worry creasing her eyebrows.
"Of course. If you want to leave, we can leave," she said.
"Yeah, let's go. I'll take you to my house. Sleepover tonight, yeah?" Melissa stood, helping Sadie up with her.
Sadie nodded as she linked her arm with Melissa's.
"Sleepover? I'm always down for that," McKenna declared as she stood and followed her friends out the door.
"Alright then. You can borrow my pjs. Let the sleepover commence. Your steed." Melissa bowed and opened the passenger door for Sadie.
Sadie laughed slightly as she got in the car. "We can eat popcorn and ice cream, have a Marvel marathon, gossip about absolutely everything and nothing at the same time…." She said after steadying her voice.
"All hail Sadie, queen of sleepovers!" Melissa said, shutting the door. She circled around and got in the other side. She gave McKenna a thumbs up and backed out of her spot. "You know what's so perfect?" she asked, carefully reversing.
McKenna smiled and waved the pair off before getting into her car and following behind.
"What?" Sadie asked, taking a deep breath as she wiped her tears.
"I just went to the store this morning and bought [insert name of Sadie's favorite ice cream] and popcorn!" Melissa headed down the street.
