Ailith took a step back as Bahari suggested. "Idiot." She muttered, watching William. "Why would you do that?"
Bahari stepped forward. "Stay back still." She walked up to William. "You have shared your soul. You cannot get back until we at island. Stay in crow's nest. Keep necklace. Without necklace, you even more sick." She explained, guiding him to the bottom of the net leading up to the nest.
She gave a stern glance to Ailith. "We owe him much." She turned to help William up the net, which was difficult, considering his state.
“I- I can see them. I can hear them,” William said vaguely, his voice hoarse. He tried blinking it away but they only seemed to get louder. Spirits were surrounding him, whispering to him. William waved an arm back at the invisible ghosts, “G-Get away.” He puked again, and the spirits obliged, giving him space. But the whispers were still there.
"I know. Ignore. You speak to them when in nest. Okay?" She ordered.
Ailith stared at William. "What did that arrow do to him?"
"I told you! Middle eye cloudy. Arrow clear it. Keep safe distance." William was halfway up the net now, but Bahari wasn't risking something happening to either of them.
"He's throwing up and muttering about spirits." Ailith called out. "I don't see how clearing his middle eye helped him if it's doing this to him."
"He would die. Which would you have?" Bahari called down, not accepting arguments.
William could barely focus, but he tried to climb up to the crow’s nest. The nest meant peace, not having to participate with both worlds at once. With the help of Bahari, he made it into the crow’s nest and curled up. So much noise… “People are not supposed to see and talk with spirits and live.” He stated aloud, staring into nothing. The whispers caressed him, but it was unwanted. William’s body felt like it was being pulled apart by both realms.
"I know." Bahari pulled out the arrow. "Whenever you feel very ripped, poke your middle eye. Do not lose it. Necklace saved you from death."
William was about to tell Bahari, he was about to tell her about his tarrot card, but instead he just took the arrow with a shaky hand. He buried his head between his arms. That noise.
"Are you good? I was training for witchdoctor, you tell me and I will believe and fix - try to fix." Bahari got him settled into the nest and was about to leave.
William started shivering as he looked up to Bahari hopelessly, tears rimming his eyes, “I want it to stop.” William had grown up meditating and talking to spirits, but not on this level. Never like this. Normally he’d speak to them, and get one vague message through a tarrot drawing or smoke. But now… he was trapped, forced to listen to their language that grated against his ears.
"It will once we get to spirit island, where you can reclaim the part of your soul that you gave. Is there anything I should know?" Bahari was becoming concerned for poor William who looked utterly terrified.
The longer William heard the spirits, the more he wanted Bahari to stay. He knew that it would be easier if he didn’t have to talk to anyone, but at the same time he just didn’t want to be alone right now. William shook his head, but a few tears slipped out in the process and he curled up again, clutching his head.
"I'm staying." Bahari shut the trapdoor and sat across from him. "What was on the tarrot card?" She asked.
William drew a shaky breath, “It was just for me. It wasn’t about the crew or the ship, it was just about me,” The tears just wouldn’t stop now. The spirits were getting louder, they knew what was on the card. William pulled at his hair, “I-“ His voice cracked. If he said the words aloud it would make them more real, and he couldn’t do that. He just couldn’t.
"Was it death? Just nod your head yes or shake your head no." Bahari needed to know so that she could try and fix it.
William looked a Bahari, a heavy invisible weight behind his tear-marred eyes, “P-Promise not to tell?”
Bahari almost laughed but knew this wasn't the time. "My family has kept secrets since the beginning of time. Of course not." She promised.
(Sorry I disappeared, I had practice)
William’s hands shook as he replied, “I-It was death, but-“ William wiped shakily at his tears, “B-But the spirits said th-that I-“ William broke down again, and the whispers swirled around William, almost chanting what they wanted of him. He just wanted them to go. He had never, never felt so frail and scared, “They want me to plague this world. They want me to become the thing we are trying to stop. And I- I’m afraid.”
Bahari's mind raced. As far as her grandma had taught her, this had happened only once before. Ni'kai, her great-grandma's old friend, had been just like William - and this had happened to her for the sole reason that she had replaced her birth gift to her - in her case, a pipe made of white clay. Birth gifts were special gifts granted from the spirits to those children they saw would grow to worship them - as William had done.
"Did you misplace your birth gift?" She placed her hand over his, trying to dull his fear.
“It’s not that,” William started rocking himself, tears streaming down his face, “I-I-I used to m-much. And th-they are fond of m-me, so they wanted to save me. To preserve me on this earth. B-But all spirits that actually walk on this earth turned-“ William couldn’t keep talking, letting out another few sobs.
"Well, we're going to fix that before they can turn you into one of the plagued. We'll hit the Maldives first, and you can send a request to be placed there once you have passed. Then you are sure to be a pure spirit when the time comes. This is an honor if only we make it to be. But first, you need to secure yourself a spot as a pure spirit - by defeating the evil spirits in the Maldives." There was silence. "Should I leave you now?"
