Rowan quickly climbs up to the roof after a few students.
"I said we're on the roof… We're fine. All of my kids made it out," Edward sighed, "I just… where's my daughter?"
He was shaking a bit and scanned the rooftop. She wasn't there.
Lynde wasn't close enough to the window to make it out with the other kids. She was closer to the supply closet when the door burst open and she shut herself in, panting.
What… what are those?!
She looked around. No windows. That's right… light might have a bad reaction with some of the chemicals in storage, so no windows. Lynde cursed under her breath, but then she had an idea. She picked up a stool and placed it on one of the tables, then pushed up one of the boards in the ceiling so she could climb up into the space above. She tried her best not to think about being in the company of rats and spiders. It was better than whatever she might face down there, though.
She pulled out her phone and sent a text to her father:
Dad, are you okay?
Maria and Bee hear Edward's phone ping and pull out their own, dialing their parents and 911.
Edward lifted his phone up. Lynde.
Yes, we're on the roof.
Can I call you, dad?
Yes
"Hold on, Poe. My daughter's trying to call. Lynde?"
"Dad… dad, oh my god… I'm trapped… I'm in the ceiling of one of the chemical storage closets. It was the only way I could get away… They haven't broken in yet, but I'm so afraid…"
"Hold tight, pumpkin. I'll make sure someone can get to you, even if it isn't me," he promised, "Keep me updated."
"What's going on?" Lynde asked, her voice going to a soft whimper.
"I don't know, but it'll be okay."
"Will it?"
After a few seconds of silence, Edward sighed. "I'll make sure you're okay. I love you. Stay safe. Don't do anything I wouldn't. I'll see you soon."
"I… I love you too…"
Edward hung up and switched back to Mr. Poe's line. He placed his phone in his pocket and helped up a few kids who were coming from the chemistry lab.
Mr. Poe sighed deeply. He had no clue what to do. He was just sitting there in the janitor's closet after using his students as a sacrifice. He felt guilty, but he knew that there was no time for that. He set his phone down gently beside him and began a small panic session. Something he hadn't done in a while.
"Holy shit, look at them." A kid whispered in horror as the creatures all began to leave the school, having eaten everyone inside, they began to move almost in unison to find more people to eat.
"They can't get us up here." Horace breathes out a sigh of relief. "They gave up."
Rowan looked over the side of the roof and his eyes popped out. "What the hell is going on?" He muttered. He backed away from the edge and came towards the other kids who were surrounding the teachers. A couple kids were on there phones, some were live streaming thr situation while others were calling 911.
"The lines are all backed up, they aren't answering." Maria complains after her fourth attempt to call the police.
"Or maybe there's no one left to answer." One kid says quietly. Almost immediately all the kids that heard him begin panicking again.
(LMAO they would be livestreaming this)
Edward sighed in relief.
"Okay, everyone stay where you are, and don't go back inside. There may still be stragglers," he said.
Wait a few minutes, Lynde. We think they're going away.
Lynde didn't respond. She was curled up in the ceiling, shaking and trying not to cry.
Edward looked to the chemistry students on the roof. He recognized them as such because many of them still had on their lab goggles, gloves, and aprons.
"Hey, was my kid with you? Lynde Moore?" he asked.
He wasn't sure what kind of answer he would get, but it was worth asking. Maybe they didn't even know her.
"Ahh, yeah." A tall boy with glasses says. "She insulted our intelligence right before a few of us were eaten by monsters or fell to our deaths. No biggie."
"Eddie!" Horace hisses and smacks his shoulders. "Now is not the time!"
A few cameras look over to them, videoing everything.
"Hey, stop doing that!" One of the older kids orders. "Preserve your batteries, have none of you ever seen a zombie movie?"
"Are you implying that those were zombies?" A kid asks incredulously.
"Well they sure ain't my grandma!" Another kid shouts.
Bee grabs Maria's arm and slowly pulls her away. With this many chaotic Gen Zs on one roof, a fight was bound to break out.
"Alright, we actually need to settle down," Edward said, "I'm pretty sure you already noticed so it doesn't need repeating, but we are facing very real danger here, so it's not exactly time for playing around."
Edward was relieved, though. He knew exactly where Lynde was.
(I love these kids so much omg)
(Ikr, they are idiots but also fairly smart, typical gen z/millennials)
"What the FUCK is up Kyle, no what the fuck? Step the FUCk up bro!" A kid screams out in a panic, and their friend smacks them across the face.
"I'm sorry I quote vines when I get nervous." She whimpers.
(Ikr, they are idiots but also fairly smart, typical gen z/millennials)
(They actually wouldn't be millennials because the youngest millennials will be turning 25 in 2020.)
(Yeah, that's wild… Dude, I'm gen z by only 4 years and even people a few years younger than me baffle me tbh)
"Okay, I think we all need to calm down." Bee says loudly. "Everyone take a seat…"
"Who died and made you-"
"SIT THE FUCK DOWN JACKSON OR SO HELP ME GOD!" Bee screeches.
The students all slam down and Bee takes a deep breath, shakily smiling.
"Great. Now everyone breathe in for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, and then breathe out for eight seconds." She instructs. "And as you're doing that close your eyes and see if you can feel the wind. How's the roof beneath you? Is it solid? Yes, it is. We're all okay for now, keep breathing."
"We need a plan. Edward, do we have anything on our side?" He asked, silently praying that there was some good news.
"Okay, honestly?" Edward replied, "I'm just as lost as you guys, but we are safe for now. We should definitely wait this out a bit longer before we try to leave."
(I love how Edward is like a slightly older college student XD)
(I almost had him start the sentence with, "Ima be real with you, chief." So yes, more or less. Definitely quotes stuff his kids say but does it correctly.)
(This is a high school. I wondered why you did that for the longest time.)
Mr. Poe tried to open the door of the janitor's closet, but something was blocking it. He pushed multiple times, but there was way too much weight for him to move. He thought to call Edward but stopped himself. I rely on him way too much. I can get out of this myself, he thought. He pondered his options until his eyes landed on a broom.
(Every other student is a teenager. So either these are all some gifted lil' shits with only one normal college student, or this guy wandered into the wrong classes and hasn't said anything, which cracks me up.)
(I mean you could also always go student teacher, but idk)
Maria sighed with boredom as some of the kids broke off into their own social groups, with the science kids on one side of the roof and the english kids on the other.
