(Based loosely off of the song by Asking Alexandria.)
This idea is set in a conformist society, simply known as M.E.R.C.Y. (Mandatory Evaluation of Rejected Conformists in their Youth).
In this society, those with supernatural abilities are looked down upon by those without. Those people are considered a lesser subspecies of human, and they are called "anomalies", or "noms" for short. Normal humans are often referred to as "norms" or "normies", short for "normalities".
Every expecting family must submit their newborn child to a DNA test meant to search for the mutations that would signify their child being an Anomaly. If the child proves to be such, they are then tagged and monitored throughout their childhood and adolescence. If at that point, they have demonstrated what is considered by the government to be a powerful ability, then that Nom is taken in and either killed or coerced into working for the government to control riots or hunt down the rogues. They are known as high tiers. Some high tiers volunteer to help the government in the hopes that they'll get better treatment, and in most cases, they get it.
Many Noms have resisted the government, and many have died trying. The chips implanted at birth serve as both a tracker and a measure of control, as they're programmed to release a shockwave at the press of a button. These devices can be found with almost every security guard or police officer, as well as anyone with the money to purchase one of the black markets, and it's not uncommon to hear stories of general abuse, or even deaths, caused by excessive electrocution. One more unfortunate disadvantage to being chipped is that they send alerts to every mobile device within a hundred-foot radius of the anomaly.
Noms often find it hard to accomplish day-to-day tasks because of this. They're excluded from shopping in certain stores, eating at certain restaurants or fast food joints, etc. It's especially hard to find a job since many people don't want to associate themselves with a place that has Noms working for them.
There are a few activist groups made specifically for Noms that ensure they at least have enough food to eat or a place to stay if they need one, but these "safe havens" are often targets of hate groups, and so entering one just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than keeping away.
This way of life has been continuing for centuries. Except, things are a little different now.
There are rumors of a resistance, so fantastical that their name isn't yet known to the public. Supposedly, it consists of a few escaped high tiers and rejects. Rumors even claim that they've found a way to disable the chips.
Flocks of Noms have swarmed to the East, where this fabled rebel group supposedly lies, searching for sanctuary. Those same flocks have been killed for their efforts.
Not all hope is lost, however, as the resistance does exist. They're targeting Noms and Nom supporters with promise, recruiting them for their cause slowly, but surely, hoping to escape the government's notice long enough to bring them down from the shadows.
Where in this story do you fit in?
So basically I'm looking for people to fill in the following positions:
Nom Sympathist:
- Exactly what the name would suggest. Someone who's willing to fight for the Noms, and perhaps work behind the scenes dishing out provisions or serving as a medic to the injured. In the resistance, sympathizers are rare, but valued, as the reason they're allowed is because they've proven their loyalty.
Traitor:
- A Normie or High Tier posing as a Nom sympathist or supporter until they have the opportunity to report their activities to the government, often in exchange for status or money.
High Tier:
- Government lackey, searching for rogue Noms to either capture or kill. These are often accompanied by a "handler", who carries one of the shock devices at all times.
Handler:
- Watches over the High Tiers to ensure they don't defect or attempt something stupid. As mentioned above, they possess a shock device used for controlling chipped Noms.
Nom Citizens:
- Your everyday Nom living in M.E.R.C.Y. If you chose to have a Nom character, they will be inevitably be chosen by the Resistance to fight for their cause.
Rebel:
- A member of the resistance. Committed to fighting for the freedom of all Noms. There's a divide as to whether Normies should be treated as the lesser subspecies, or whether everyone should be treated equally receive the same rights.
You can play more than character but can have up to a max of three at one time (If there are only a couple of people who are interested in this, I may raise that number to five). If one character dies, you may create another in their place.
You are only required to provide information for your character if they are a "main character". If they're purely meant for spurring conflict in between responses, all you need is their name and affiliation.
- (i.e. A High Tier hunting down your Nom in order to motivate them, a Handler threatening your High Tier for considering something stupid, a Rebel to recruit your Nom, a traitor to expose your Sympathizer/Rebel etc.)
I'd like to see how many people, if any, are interested in this after the massive infodump, so I'll wait until I see signs of life before adding anything else.
Rules:
- Be civil when you're out of character. Your character might be a jerk, but that doesn't give you the right to be.
- Cussing is fine on the condition that it's censored in some way. I'm saying this because some people are sensitive to this stuff.
- LGBT+ is totally fine by me, but no relationship should be the sole focus of this roleplay, simply because your characters will have other goals.
- In terms of abilities, just don't make them too overpowered. It's okay to give a character an ability that might be considered overpowered, as long as they have a significant weakness of some sort. I'll give an example with one of my characters at some point.
- I probably forgot something, but just ask me if you need clarification on something! I promise I don't bite :)
