(Based loosely off of the song by Asking Alexandria.)

This idea is set in a conformist society, simply known as M.E.R.C.Y. (Mandatory Evaluation of Rejected Conformists in their Youth).

In this society, those with supernatural abilities are looked down upon by those without. Those people are considered a lesser subspecies of human, and they are called "anomalies", or "noms" for short. Normal humans are often referred to as "norms" or "normies", short for "normalities".

Every expecting family must submit their newborn child to a DNA test meant to search for the mutations that would signify their child being an Anomaly. If the child proves to be such, they are then tagged and monitored throughout their childhood and adolescence. If at that point, they have demonstrated what is considered by the government to be a powerful ability, then that Nom is taken in and either killed or coerced into working for the government to control riots or hunt down the rogues. They are known as high tiers. Some high tiers volunteer to help the government in the hopes that they'll get better treatment, and in most cases, they get it.

Many Noms have resisted the government, and many have died trying. The chips implanted at birth serve as both a tracker and a measure of control, as they're programmed to release a shockwave at the press of a button. These devices can be found with almost every security guard or police officer, as well as anyone with the money to purchase one of the black markets, and it's not uncommon to hear stories of general abuse, or even deaths, caused by excessive electrocution. One more unfortunate disadvantage to being chipped is that they send alerts to every mobile device within a hundred-foot radius of the anomaly.

Noms often find it hard to accomplish day-to-day tasks because of this. They're excluded from shopping in certain stores, eating at certain restaurants or fast food joints, etc. It's especially hard to find a job since many people don't want to associate themselves with a place that has Noms working for them.

There are a few activist groups made specifically for Noms that ensure they at least have enough food to eat or a place to stay if they need one, but these "safe havens" are often targets of hate groups, and so entering one just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than keeping away.

This way of life has been continuing for centuries. Except, things are a little different now.

There are rumors of a resistance, so fantastical that their name isn't yet known to the public. Supposedly, it consists of a few escaped high tiers and rejects. Rumors even claim that they've found a way to disable the chips.

Flocks of Noms have swarmed to the East, where this fabled rebel group supposedly lies, searching for sanctuary. Those same flocks have been killed for their efforts.

Not all hope is lost, however, as the resistance does exist. They're targeting Noms and Nom supporters with promise, recruiting them for their cause slowly, but surely, hoping to escape the government's notice long enough to bring them down from the shadows.

Where in this story do you fit in?

So basically I'm looking for people to fill in the following positions:

Nom Sympathist:

  • Exactly what the name would suggest. Someone who's willing to fight for the Noms, and perhaps work behind the scenes dishing out provisions or serving as a medic to the injured. In the resistance, sympathizers are rare, but valued, as the reason they're allowed is because they've proven their loyalty.

Traitor:

  • A Normie or High Tier posing as a Nom sympathist or supporter until they have the opportunity to report their activities to the government, often in exchange for status or money.

High Tier:

  • Government lackey, searching for rogue Noms to either capture or kill. These are often accompanied by a "handler", who carries one of the shock devices at all times.

Handler:

  • Watches over the High Tiers to ensure they don't defect or attempt something stupid. As mentioned above, they possess a shock device used for controlling chipped Noms.

Nom Citizens:

  • Your everyday Nom living in M.E.R.C.Y. If you chose to have a Nom character, they will be inevitably be chosen by the Resistance to fight for their cause.

Rebel:

  • A member of the resistance. Committed to fighting for the freedom of all Noms. There's a divide as to whether Normies should be treated as the lesser subspecies, or whether everyone should be treated equally receive the same rights.

You can play more than character but can have up to a max of three at one time (If there are only a couple of people who are interested in this, I may raise that number to five). If one character dies, you may create another in their place.

You are only required to provide information for your character if they are a "main character". If they're purely meant for spurring conflict in between responses, all you need is their name and affiliation.

  • (i.e. A High Tier hunting down your Nom in order to motivate them, a Handler threatening your High Tier for considering something stupid, a Rebel to recruit your Nom, a traitor to expose your Sympathizer/Rebel etc.)

I'd like to see how many people, if any, are interested in this after the massive infodump, so I'll wait until I see signs of life before adding anything else.

Rules:

  • Be civil when you're out of character. Your character might be a jerk, but that doesn't give you the right to be.
  • Cussing is fine on the condition that it's censored in some way. I'm saying this because some people are sensitive to this stuff.
  • LGBT+ is totally fine by me, but no relationship should be the sole focus of this roleplay, simply because your characters will have other goals.
  • In terms of abilities, just don't make them too overpowered. It's okay to give a character an ability that might be considered overpowered, as long as they have a significant weakness of some sort. I'll give an example with one of my characters at some point.
  • I probably forgot something, but just ask me if you need clarification on something! I promise I don't bite :)

Please, feel free! Although if you'd like to play a Handler, I'd recommend also playing a High Tier for them to watch over. Remember that the High Tier doesn't have to be a fleshed-out character, as long as either your Handler or Nom Citizen are! Although you're free to go into as much depth as you'd like for each character.

Would you like a template? I'll update the original post to include some rules in a moment, but I'm not planning on making them very strict. Just the general "be nice to people" and "don't make anyone OP".

@Moriarty

Alright. I'll take a High Tier as well, then. ^-^ Thank you very much.
Yes, I would love to have a template, if you don't mind.

Name: Leonardo Henderson
Gender/Pronouns: Male; he/him
Age: Twenty-three
Affiliation: Nom Citizen
Appearance: He's fair-skinned, green-eyed and has sandy blonde hair styled into short hair curtains that are longer at his forehead and shorten all the way back until the rest of the strands blend together at equal length. He has feminine lips and a largeish nose with a smattering of freckles across the bridge of it, and his teeth are slightly uneven but straight. He lacks any facial hair, and his jawline is long and generally well-defined, although not eye-catchingly so. He's about 5'7" at most.
Outfit: He typically wears a plain white tee and light blue jeans, along with an army green, hoodless jacket that hangs down to his mid-thigh and matching army green short converse. On the back of this jacket is an embroidered target with an airplane flying into the bullseye. The same design is on the left sleeve, but smaller.
Backstory: His dad is MIA, and Leo knows next to nothing about him. What he does know, is that somehow, someway, his mother was able to keep him a secret from the government. As far as they know, he's just an average Normie. He was raised by his mother until the age of fifteen, at which point she passed away due to illness. After that, Leo was put into foster care until he was eighteen. He got a job working at a fast-food joint and managed to get into a decent college studying physics. (FYI, very shortly after this roleplay starts, he'll be chipped. That's why I didn't include being 'not chipped' as an option for other Noms, as his situation is almost unheard of.)
Personality: He comes across as moody sometimes, but it's only because he's so often lost in thought. Overall, he's a tiny bit chaotic, and a whole lot concerned for the wellbeing of others. As much as he wants to look out for them, however, his own self-preservation is more important to him. He feels as if he owes that much to his mom, at least.
Ability: Kinetic energy manipulation. He can redirect kinetic energy, either slowing down, speeding up or stopping objects/people in motion at will. He can stop physical attacks (i.e. bullets, swords, fists, etc.) simply by focusing on their kinetic energy at the moment of impact. It will be absorbed, and he can use to to power another object, such as the pebbles he uses with his slingshot. With enough force (kinetic energy), a simple stone being flung through the air can shatter steel as if it were glass. He also enjoys using paper airplanes for a similar effect, although pebbles are more portable. With enough concentration, he can also alter his own kinetic energy, saving himself from falling large distances, aiding in dodging attacks that he can't absorb the kinetic energy from, and overall prevent him from sustaining injuries. He can even affect the kinetic energy of particles, warming them up to an explosive degree or cooling them to nearly nothing. This is all the best-case scenario, of course. His control over his own kinetic energy is flimsy at best, and wielding massive chunks tires him out quickly. It's also incredibly difficult to absorb the kinetic energy of multiple objects at once, leaving him vulnerable to surprise attacks. It's impossible for him (or anyone) to store kinetic energy, and he has no influence over potential energy, so for him to be able to manipulate an object, it must first be in motion.
Gear: A slingshot, pebbles, and a switchblade, as well as a bag with a first aid kit, water, and non-perishable foods.
Other: N/A

Other Characters:

High Tier - Alyssa; electrical manipulation
Handler - Monty; Alyssa's handler
Rebel - Azrael; electrical manipulation

@Moriarty

Name: Leea Connor
Gender/Pronouns: Female (straight); she/her
Age: Twenty-two (22)
Affiliation: Nom Citizen
Appearance: She's around 5'5" with a small, slender build and fair skin. She has straight, platinum blonde hair that reaches down to her waist, and she generally wears it pulled back into a messy ponytail; she has short bangs that fall to either side of her face, ending right around her cheek bones. Her eyes are large, with light-brown irises and long lashes (though, the lashes aren't overly noticeable, as they're the same tone as her hair and she doesn't wear makeup). She has a small, slightly upturned nose and average-sized lips, with a rounded face. She looks younger than she actually is, probably appearing around seventeen or so.
Outfit: On a typical day, Leea wears a loose beanie over her head, a pair of thick-frames glasses, and it's not uncommon to find her with a pair of headphones hanging around her neck. She's never been one to bother with dressing formally, preferring to wear band t-shirts tucked into her dark jeans and blue converse sneakers. She's not a fan of jewelry, except for one necklace that she almost always wears– a simple charm with an infinity sign on it.
Backstory: Leea, of course, has been chipped as a Nom for her whole life– and she's pretty used to the less-than-welcoming treatment she receives from Normies. She is the oldest of three siblings, though ever since she moved out of her house at the age of eighteen, she hasn't heard much from them. Her relationship with her family is pretty rocky, especially considering the fact that her parents had claimed to hate Noms up until they found out she would be one. They never directly spoke negatively to her about it, but she has lived most her life feeling like they disapprove of her existence, whether it be true or not. Currently, she's doing nothing of interest, merely scrounging around in an attempt to keep herself afloat and have enough money to stay in her shabby apartment.
Personality: INTP || Leea is quiet and reserved, generally keeping to herself. She has a tendency to get lost in her thoughts, to overthink things, and to be mildly pessimistic. She has a soft heart, but she can come across as distant and cold at times, especially around new people. Then again, not many people are too fond of her considering that she's a Nom. She's not overly concerned about her own well-being, though she's not completely reckless to the point that she wouldn't care if she died. She can appear quite stoic, though she's not usually on the inside.
Ability: Leea can teleport herself for short distances. She can do this silently and without drawing attention to herself, but she is limited to line-of-sight teleportation, meaning if she can't see it, she can't teleport there. She can take small objects– and, with a bit of strain, sometimes even people– with her, but she must be touching them in order to do so. Teleporting repeatedly or trying to teleport multiple people at once can cause her a lot of strain, give her a headache, and even cause her to pass out if she overdoes it.
Gear: Leea carries a small satchel with her that contains water and a small knife, but she usually leaves it near-empty so that she can collect any other interesting trinkets she comes across.
Other: Leea does enjoy collecting random trinkets and small objects.

(Is she alright? I will be uploading my other two ASAP)

@Moriarty

I have a question, if you don't mind. ^-^ I was just curious… about how old do you think my character would be, realistically, when he's taken to be a High Tier? From the plot, I assumed around adolescence, but I wanted to clarify so that I didn't accidentally deviate from the plot– which is incredibly well done, by the way. I was also curious as to whether or not shadow and light related powers were possible, so long as I can give a description that explains them?

Anonymous84

The stronger your High Tier is, the earlier the age that they'll be taken in. That being said, they should be, at a bare minimum, around sixteen years old!

And as for powers, anything can go as long as you find a way to avoid making them too OP. Light and shadows sounds interesting, so yeah, go for it!

And thanks for the compliment! I appreciate it :)
The plot is an idea I came up with while I was planning out an animation I'd like to make to the song "The Violence" by Asking Alexandria.

@Yoaisami

This seems interesting! Don't count me in too soon though, because I have a lot of work chasing after me and I need to see if I can finish it all first QaQ
I was drawn to the high-tier and handler section, but I may be making a rebel as well? (Just not as soon because I want to play two characters alright before juggling three)

@Yoaisami

Before I continue with my cs, I have a small question-
You mentioned that high-tiers are stronger the younger they are taken. So do you mean they can be taken at any age? (I know the minimum age limit though, I meant by.. backstory stuff kek)

They would be taken at a minimum of sixteen. Although, if you're looking to have them influenced from a younger age, your High Teir could always be a child of a Handler? Hopefully this helps! :)

And @ShadowWolf13, you are more than welcome to join!

(i have a quick question, if i make my character telekenetic, could i say he has a job too? like a moving or warehouse storage job?)

Sure! Just as long as you're aware that the employer is probably a Nom sympathist.

And @Icefire, you're just as welcome to join if you'd like!

Anonymous84

Yes to both!
However, I think I am going to close this for now.

@Icefire is welcome to join at a later time, as they showed interest here in the beginning, and I may open this again if people leave or things dull.
