"Something's wrong," He said cautiously.
"Something's wrong," He said cautiously.
"No, there isn't." She said with a tone of finality.
"Okay," He dragged the word out, letting the conversation drop.
They pulled onto a freeway in frosty silence. It was so cold, you could make ice cream.
He looked out the window, watching the fields pass. After 20 more minutes of driving, they arrived at Lil's parent's house.
When they got out of the car, and up to her parent's house, a man that went up to Razin's shoulder answered the door. He had lank black hair and was muscular, and in between his thick fingers, he held a cigar, which was smoldering gently. He had the same pointy teeth as Lil and his lips were pointing upward in the same fashion.
"Ah! Lil, my child!" He gasped, and hugged her. "How are you doing?"
Lil grinned at her father. "Quite well, daddy, thank you. And you?"
"Doing nicely, sweetie." He looked over at Razin. "I expect you're treating her well?"
Lil muttered something under her breath neither of the men caught.
"I like to think I am," He smiled politely.
The man pulled away from his daughter as she did so, and nodded approvingly. "Good. Alright, come in, come in." He beckoned them as he backed into his home.
Razin waited for Lil to go in before him and he shut the door behind them.
Lil's father swept them towards the table and pulled Lil's chair out for her. "Azeeellllee! Azele! Lil and Razin are here!"
"Oh! Tell them the food is almost ready!"
He turned towards them with a grin. "The food is almost ready."
"Wonderful," He said, taking a seat next to Lil, "May I ask what it is?"
Lil's father laughed a hearty laugh. "No idea!"
"I guess it'll be a surprise for everyone then," He clasped his hands together, "Is there anything I can help with?"
He waved his hand, while the other put the cigar in his mouth. "No, no m'boy. Azele will get mad at me if I let you." He laughed again.
He smiled, nodding, "So, what have you been up to lately?"
He winked at him. "Oh, y'know, this and that." He puffed his cigar.
"Of course," He looked over at Lil, noticing she was very quiet. "You alright?" He asked quietly.
She was looking through a book at the table. "Yes."
"Okay," He muttered before turning back to her father, "Did you watch the game the other night?"
"Ah, yes! But Azele made me turn it off." He pulled a mocking sour face. "'All you ever watch are those games, dear. Let's go do something productive!'"
He chuckled, "Ah, there's a fine line between work and play."
Lil's father laughed for the third time. "Right you are!"
Razin nodded, a smile still on his face. He let a moment of silence come over the three.
"So, have you two discussed having a child?" Lil's father asked conversationally.
He looked over at Lil, "Uh," He hesitated, "Well, we're waiting until we're ready for that responsibility."
