"That's true for sure, we need to get out of here as fast as we can." She whispered back.
"That's true for sure, we need to get out of here as fast as we can." She whispered back.
"But how?" he asked despairingly. "There's no end to this place, I've wandered here for years."
"For years?" She asked in surprise
"Years," he affirmed grimly. "It takes great pleasure in reminding me exactly how long I've been here."
"That's a long time… I'll help you get out of here no matter what."
He blinked gratefully at Raven. "Thank-you. I'll make sure we both get out, if we find a way."
"You're welcome." She said, smiling at him.
"We'd better get moving," he said, energy creeping into his voice for the first time. "We should hold onto each other, in case it tries to separate us." He held out his hand.
"That's a good idea," She took his hand. "Let's go."
As they set off, the mist instantly became choking and almost physically impassible. Each step seemed to take every iota of energy they had, and an invisible force tried to pull them apart. Whispering, dry and harsh, in an alien language swirled around them. Raven could feel Sabriel's hand shaking.
Then the ground, previously dry and parched, gave way beneath them; packed dirt turning to sucking mud. Foul scents rose into the air, making them cough and choke.
She looked around trying to avoid spots were the mud was very wet. She squeezed Sabriel's hand, hoping to comfort him and quietly followed him.
His pace became more erratic, weaving uncertainly this way and that. He gripped Raven's hand tightly, muttering to himself incoherently. Eventually he stopped, shaking his head violently.
"I can't see you!" he cried. "Raven, I can't see you, where are you?"
"I'm right here!" She said waving her hands, hoping to clear the fog around her.
His gaze slid right past her. "I can't feel you!" His hand dropped out of hers as he spun wildly around. "I can hear you, but I can't see you!"
The mist greedily pushed in between them, ready to obscure him from sight in a flash. His figure began to fade.
"Neither can I! Stay where you are!" She said, and started walking forward, in hopes of bumping into him.
For a moment, the mist pushed against her, and a hot wind blew her back, but then she broke through it, and crashed into Sabriel. He jumped, but upon recognizing Raven, relief flooded his face.
"It's trying to separate us," he said. "We need to get out of this marsh. It's always worse in the marshes. Which way did we come from?"
"Well, I didn't turn around or anything so, backwards for me." She said, blushing slightly at how clumsy she was.
"Right," he said sheepishly. "I…shouldn't have panicked, I endangered both of us. Maybe you'd better lead."
"You didn't endanger both of us, and i'll take lead if you feel you want me to," She said and held out her hand.
He took her hand again, and followed her as they back-tracked.
"Be careful, it'll try and separate us again, I'm sure," he warned.
"I know, we already went through it," She tightly held onto his hands as she quietly back-tracked.
Is it too warm for your liking?
"Heh, true," he said with a weak smile. They found their way out of the marsh easily enough, and as the ground become more solid, Sabriel gave a sigh of relief. "I think we need a better pan then just wandering in the hopes of finding our way out," he said with chagrin. "I feel so useless, I've been here for so long, but I have no idea where anything is…Somewhere there's an old farmhouse that could provide some shelter, but I have no clue where it is from here."
She just ignored the voice in the back of her head and looks at him. "We do need a better plan, and at least we know there's shelter we can use here."
"But what can we do when it controls this place?" he asked. "It can make this place be whatever it wants it to be, and then some. Trust me, just walking in a straight line isn't going to find us the edge of this place. I…I tried that once. For three years."
"You kept walking in a straight line for three years?!"
