Lillian looked to Darren. She felt it would be wrong to speak for him.
Lillian looked to Darren. She felt it would be wrong to speak for him.
The words came out slowly, "Am I going to die?"
The doctor looked down, "It is a possibility but our neurology team here is very good and will do everything in their power to prevent that."
"So what's going to happen then?" Darren said, not making eye contact with anyone and opting to just stare at his toes.
The doctor let out a sigh, "Well there is a lot of things that have to happen now⌠You will receive Chemotherapy treatment if that is what you want. That will help fight the cancer. The other decision that needs to be made is when you are going to have your brain surgery." "Brain surgery!?!" Darren's eyes grew wide.
Lillian grew wide eyed. She didnât think he would need brain surgery!
Dr. Britian nodded, "It's necessary with the size of the tumor. You should have come into the doctor when you first began to experience the headaches. Another thing that will happen eventually is you will have episodes where you will have mood changes. You might yell or be angry for no reason and not remember it. This is common of brain tumors near the Frontal Lobe like yours."
âHow large is it?â Lillian couldnât help but ask.
The doctor looked up at Lillian, "Well the size doesn't matter nearly as much as the location. The location is what determines the effects."
âSo because its in the frontal lobe, it need to be removed immediately.â
"Exactly," The doctor responded, "The sooner we schedule the surgery the better it will be for Mr. Anderson here." He said looking at Darren who was still staring dismissively at his feet.
Lillian looked to Darren. She squeezed his hand.
"Yeah." He said suddenly, not breaking his staring contest with his toes. "Tomorrow then."
The doctor nodded and wrote something down on his clipboard, "You should shave your hair to a very short buzz tonight in preparation, you are free to go." He smiled and left the room.
Lillian looked at Darrenâs hair. She put her hands through it, âYour really brave. You know that right?â
Darren swung his feet over the edge of the bed and stood up, "Thanks." He hugged her, "When my memory is destroyed from this and I can't remember what I had for breakfast, please don't let me forget you."
Lillian smiled and hugged him back, âI promise. Besides like youâll be able to forget me.â
Darren released the hug, "We should go then."
Lillian nodded, âYeah.â
They walked outside, "How do we leave? I don't have my car."
Lillian smiled, âWe walk. Unless you want to see if anyone can pick us up.â
"It's not that far I guess. And a walk can help relieve stress or something." Darren began walking.
Lillian walked alongside him, âYou donât walk that often do you?â
"Not really, It's not my thing." Darren was looking at the ground, or really anywhere that wasn't Lillian's eyes.
Lillian sighed. She enjoyed walking, âI guess. How are you doing?â
"Will you help me shave my head when I get home?" He said, avoiding the question, mostly because he didn't really know how he was doing.
