"Who are you?" Courtney repeated her question, crossing her arms and glaring at the girl.
"Who are you?" Courtney repeated her question, crossing her arms and glaring at the girl.
"K-Kitty," she stammered.
"Okay, Kitty, why aren't you frozen like everyone else?" Courtney demanded.
"I-I don't know," Kitty whispered timidly.
Courtney frowned. "How do you not know?" she asked, genuinely curious.
"I was just walking… and waiting for my boyfriend to text me…" Kitty answered slowly.
"But… How could you not know how you're not frozen?" Courtney asked again, completely confused. The only people who didn't get frozen when she did this were those she touched while doing it. Like her team, for example.
"I was just walking!" Kitty insisted. "I really don't know. How come you're not frozen?"
Courtney froze, her cheeks heating up. "Uh…"
Kitty found a weak spot. "How come you're not frozen?" she repeated.
Don't tell her, don't tell her!
"I'm… immune to this kind of thing," Courtney said with a shrug.
"I guess… I guess I am too," Kitty said thoughtfully.
"That would make sense," Courtney laughed.
Kitty blushed. That was stupid saying that… "Wh-What's your name?" she asked.
"I'm Courtney," she introduced herself. "Um, Courtney Thompson."
"Katerina Vane. My friends call me Kitty."
"Nice to meet you, Kitty." Courtney laughed. "My sister would love your nickname. She's obsessed with cats."
Kitty smiled, warming up to Courtney now that she wasn't so… hostile. "So, did you pause time?"
"What? No, no! I don't do that," Courtney denied it, maybe a bit too quickly. Either way, she accidentally let time go again, surprising even herself.
Kitty was instantly knocked over by a fastpaced man. She hit the ground and her phone burst free from her fingertips, sliding far across the white and grey checkered tiled floor.
Courtney watched the phone slide before walking over and picking it up. She brought it back to Kitty and handed it to her.
"Here."
"Thanks." Kitty pushed herself up. "You don't pause time, huh?" she asked, looking at Courtney skeptically.
"Nope," Courtney said, her eyes wide in feigned innocence.
"Then who does?" Kitty challenged. She was very good at reading people, and her gut told her that Courtney was lying to her.
Courtney shrugged and looked around for her sister.
"Dunno."
