"Wait, who did make it? I'm not going to get cursed by the god of emotions or something, am I?" Miles said, still staring at the fire.
"Wait, who did make it? I'm not going to get cursed by the god of emotions or something, am I?" Miles said, still staring at the fire.
Ari laughed again. "Don't worry, you're safe." She took a few steps back, suddenly aware of how close she was to the fire.
"Are you scared of it or something? You just backed away from it like it was an out of control animal," Miles joked, looking at Ari.
Ari looked at Miles, her eyes full of fear.
"Are you joking… is that what's happening? What's the matter?" Miles questioned, suddenly worried again.
Ari clasped her shaking hands together, looking away from Miles and the fire. But she revealed a VERY noticeable burn scar on the inside of her forearm. "They burned my if I didn't obey them." She whispered, talking about her last foster family.
Miles' eyes widened at the scar. "Who… who burned you?" he asked in a small voice.
Chiron cantered toward Viva.
"My dear, are you quite all right?" he asked her, sounding concerned.
Viva gulped back a sob, she wasn't ready to use her powers again. But this quest needed her. "I had a vision from my father, Apollo…" she started.
"Go on," Chiron reassured her.
"He, he said I have to go on the quest."
Chiron looked at her. It was creepy the way he seemed to be able to read what she was feeling all the time. He seemed sad as he placed his hand on her shoulder. "Well then, I suppose you must." then softer, he added, "do not worry child. When the time comes, you will be strong enough."
Viva managed a small smile, before Chiron shouted out to the crowd, "Viva, daughter of Apollo, has received an omen from her father. She will join the quest!"
Ari choked back a sob. "Most of my foster families." She mumbled. "Most of the scars are on my back."
Miles swallowed. "It might be easier said than done, but try not to think about it. Think about the stupid emotions and not the actual… fire part,"
"I know. I've tried. But fire has taken too much from me." She sat down on the grass, avoiding his gaze. He must think that I'm so weak.
Miles looked over at Viva, silently asking for help. He sat down next to Ari, thinking of a way to console her. "Well, you're here now, and that's all that matters. You survived."
Nobody seemed to have heard Chiron, so Viva stepped out of the spotlight, over to where Ari and Miles were. She wasn't sure what was wrong, but Miles was sending her SOS signals with his eyes.
As she went over, Chiron pounded his hoof, "Heroes!!!!" he yelled. "Listen."
Ari hugged her knees and buried her head into her knees.
Miles put a comforting hand on her shoulder. He looked up at Viva. “I’m not very good at this,” he mouthed.
Viva gave Ari a hug.
"Hey, what's up?" she asked gently.
Ari sighed, leaning into the hug. "I was bounced from foster family to foster family. They were all bad. All scary." She mumbled, her voice muffled by her knees. "All abusive."
Viva winced. She knew Ari wouldn't want pity, but she was even worse than Miles at the whole comforting gig.
"I'm sorry to hear that Ari," she whispered, squeezing Ari tighter. Viva wasn't sure what to say, so she simply said nothing, holding Ari and trying to convey her support.
Miles kept his hand on Ari’s shoulder. Viva was way better at this than him, but he might as well try.
Sienne looked at the group and walked over to see Ari and Viva hugging and Miles standing by them, "Hey, what's happening?" she asked, hoping she could somehow help.
Miles looked up to see who had talked and saw Sienne. He walked over to her, giving Ari a sympathetic smile. “Just some bad memories,” he said to Sienne.
Sienne nodded, "Can I help?" she signed.
Viva shrugged helplessly. Sienne was probably better at comforting people than her. "Go ahead." she signed, happy that she had taken the time to learn some ASL the night before.
“I’m not sure, Viva’s doing a pretty good job,” Miles said, looking back at the girls.
Viva snorted. "All I'm doing is hugging her!" She felt bad for continuing to talk, as Chiron was still trying to get everyone's attention, but helping Ari was the first priority.
