Paige shrunk back. "I-I-I'm sorry, Sir. I-I d-didn't mean to…"
Paige shrunk back. "I-I-I'm sorry, Sir. I-I d-didn't mean to…"
"Forget it," he pushed Darren causing him to fall to the ground, "Go to school," he walked out.
Paige flinched when he shoved Darren, but she got off the bed quickly and yanked Jon's arm. "Leave him alone!"
Jon flung his arm back at the contact and hit Paige in the face. "Don't tell me how to raise my son!"
Paige stumbled back, holding her cheek. She approached him again. "Leave Darren alone." Paige got a whiff of his breath and her stomach lurched. "Mr. Anderson, you're drunk. Leave him alone, please."
"I'm not drunk, and you have no business telling me how to raise that stupid boy," Jon's hands were balled into fists as Darren stood, watching helplessly.
"Yes, I do. You're certainly not being a good father," Paige replied calmly. "Please, listen…"
He pushed her, "No, you listen to me, I AM a good father."
Paige didn't stop. "A good father doesn't shove, punch, or kick his children. A good father cares about his children. A good father doesn't drink too often to be drunk 24/7. A good father doesn't call his children names."
"You don't know what it's like. She left us and I had to raise this boy on my own… YOU DON'T KNOW!" Jon was angry… or maybe sad??
Darren put a hand on Paige's shoulder as a silent way of telling her it was okay.
Paige turned to look at Darren. She put her hand on top of his.
Darren nodded and watched Jon turn and go into his room, "It's okay,"
"I-I'm sorry, Darren." She winced, cupping her cheek.
"No, you're fine. I'm sorry about him."
"What did he mean? When he said that she left you? Y-Your mother?"
He shook his head, "You don't have to worry about that," He didn't smile, his face stayed serious. Would she question it?
Paige could see in Darren's eyes that he wanted to not talk about it. She let the subject drop and tears sprung to the corners of her eyes. "Am I really a… a…"
He hugged her, "No you're not. He doesn't know what he's saying."
Paige cried into Darren's strong shoulder. "What are we going to do now?"
"Go somewhere else," He smiled. Why was he smiling? "We can do whatever you want,"
"What about your dad?"
"What about him?
"He said that you had to go to school." Paige hiccuped.
Darren laughed, "Yeah, he says that one a lot. He's going to go pass out in his room from 3 days. Besides we can't quit… It's your first ditch day,"
Paige smiled. Her tears dried as she looped her arms around Darren's neck and kissed him heavily.
