Maybe John is coming home to 221b from shopping or work or something and Sherlock is in the middle of the living room, very much alive, playing violin? It's up to you whether or not John beats the living crap out of him.

Intense violin playing

"Mrs Hudson?!" John hollered through the closed door. "It's John! I was just going to pick up something!" He tried knocking again, already feeling uneasy. It had been ages since he'd been back to the flat, he didn't know how much more he could take. He was just about to give up and try calling her when suddenly he heard a noise coming from the building.
It can't be. John's blood ran cold. With shaking hands, he peeled back the doormat revealing the extra key, It's impossible.
John lifted the key to the lock and with a familiar click, the door unlocked and opened. He sprinted up the stairs, two at a time, his breathing was ragged as he tried to keep his tears at bay. he reached the top of the stairs and tried to stand as the floor seemed to sway at under his feet.
He was alive.

"Hello John. Where are my nicotine patches?" Sherlock stopped playing.

John wanted to scream. He wanted to scream, and cry, and kiss him, and hug him, and punch him. John settled for the last option. "Why-you!" He lunged at Sherlock and punched him square in the nose.

"John, that hurt. I'm deeply offended. Dying was boring."
