Pax looked over at her. "Like what? I'm sure it's not stupid, and even if it is, I promise I wont judge or laugh."
Pax looked over at her. "Like what? I'm sure it's not stupid, and even if it is, I promise I wont judge or laugh."
Elide glanced worriedly at her but spoke anyway, “Reading is like… an escape… for me. I can forget about all my problems and the world for a while…”
"That's not stupid at all. I feel the same way." She suddenly got a flash of the pain that she used reading to escape from. The stinging feel as her dad slapped her… The ringing in her ears as both her parents swore at how useless she was…. Pax stopped in her tracks, before shaking her head and pretending nothing happened.
Elide looked up at her, concerned, “Are you okay?” She asked, quietly.
"Oh, yeah, I'm fine." She looked down at the ground, her voice a little shaky. She took a deep breath, then looked back up, giving Elide a fake smile, hoping she wouldn't think anymore of what just happened.
“No you’re not…” She said, “Please don’t lie.” She said quietly.
"You're right…" She stared at her feet. "It's just… I'll probably get in trouble if I say anything…." she whispered.
Elide placed her hand on Pax’s face, “Hey, who am I gonna tell? Whoever they are… surely they won’t know?”
"I mean, if you promise you wont say anything or tell anyone…" She mumbled, looking away so she wasn't making eye contact. "It's, it's just a problem with my parents…"
“Are they divorcing?” She asked, concern written all over her face and clear in her eyes.
"N-no… If only it was a problem that was solved that easy…" A strangled laugh escaped her throat, almost sounding animal like. She swallowed, her mouth and throat suddenly dry. "I-it's, they, well…." She couldn't bring herself to say it. She held out her arm and pulled up her sleeve. Her arm was covered in scars and bruises.
Elide gasped at the scars and bruises and hugged Pax tightly, not knowing what to say to her. Words probably wouldn’t do justice to what she was feeling. She felt tears roll down her face, “I’m so sorry.”
Caught off guard with Elide hugging her, she stood still a second, before hugging her back. Holding Elide close to her, she said, "It's alright, you don't need to apoligize.. You did nothing wrong." Pax started to cry herself. She had never told anyone this before. No one had ever questioned why she always wore long sleeves, no one had ever cared.
“But- I just… feel like if I’d known you earlier… if we’d figured this out quicker then…” She sighed “I wish I could stop it…”
"Hey, don't worry about the past, there's nothing you can do to change it." She stroked Elides hair, trying to calm herself as well as Elide. "I wish I could stop it too…. Trust me…" More tears slipped out of her eyes.
“Do you… umm..” Elide pulled back a little to look at Pax, “Wanna stay at mine tonight? If it will cause more problems then you don’t have to but…”
Smiling a little bit, she wiped away the tears on her face and quietly said, "I-if you don't mind, I'd like that. It probably wont cause me any more problems then I already have- they probably wont know I'm gone." This was probably the first time ever that she had actually hoped her parents were both either high or drunk beyond the point of comprehension.
Elide smiled, “Great, come on, my house isn’t far from here.” She grabbed Pax’s hand and squeezed it before leading her through the park. For once she was actually excited to have someone over. Normally if her dad had someone over she’d stay in her room, hoping they’d leave soon but this was different and she liked it for once.
Pax rolled down her sleeve, covering any trace of her true condition, before walking alongside Elide. She smiled a little more, seeing how happy it made Elide that she was able to come over. "I guess what they say is right… Smiles are contagious." she thought. She looked up at the surrounding trees and plants as they swayed in the breeze, something oddly peaceful about the whole scene. A picture perfect scenery and a couple walking down the path. Too bad real life can't be the picture perfect fantasy.
Elide’s house wasn’t a massive two story house but it wasn’t small either. Out the front, a hammock was slung between two trees, and a little further along a small green house. She dropped Pax’s had to undo the latch on the gate, something her dad still needed to fix and walked up the cobblestone path. Elide opened the door for Pax and bit down on her smile.
Pax started to fidget with the end of her shirt as she walked inside Elide's house. She looked at the floor, anxiety getting to her. She took a deep breath then looked back up, trying to make herself not look like a freak, and maybe give off a good impression. When she was at school it was easy to act easy going and extroverted, but in other places, it became so much harder. She looked over at Elide, trying to ignore the fear screaming in the back of her head.
Elide gave her an It’s okay, you’re gonna be okay look and gave a small smile, “Dad?” She called from the hallway.
“Yes, Elide?”
“Umm, I’m having a friend stay over tonight, alright?” She bit her lip waiting for a response.
“A friend? Stay over? This is new. That’s perfectly fine honey, I’ll order pizza for you both in a bit.” Elide could practically hear his smile.
“You’re the best.” She called back and grabbed Pax’s hand, leading her to her room.
Getting herself together, Pax smiled back at Elide. "T-thank you, again," she said. Her fidgeting stopped as she managed to get herself under control. She continued reminding herself that her own parents couldn't touch her here. Elide was here, and everything was going to be okay. She kept repeating those things in her head and she finally seemed to relax.
“It’s no problem… you’re my soulmate so I’m guessing this… this is gonna be pretty common,” She opened her bedroom door and walked in. A double bed sat in the middle, fairy light hanging on either end. Her desk was a mess of school work, writing and sketches, some with paint platters on them. In one corner her art supplies were stuffed messily in and out of draws, “Sorry about the mess.”
"Y-yeah," was her stuttered response, blushing a little after the use of the term soulmate. It was so crazy how much had changed in the past couple hours. "Oh, it's okay. You have a really cool room." Her eyes fell over the "mess" of art supplies and papers. She quietly laughed and said, "Don't think of it as a mess, it's creative clutter."
