"Just making sure. We need to take out another guard so I can get a gun too. Even though I prefer my fists."
"Just making sure. We need to take out another guard so I can get a gun too. Even though I prefer my fists."
"Right. Let's find one then."
Lau hurried down the hallway out into the main corridor in the building. At least six guards were stationed down the hall. They hadn't spotted them yet. She turned to Melody and whispered, "Take out the one on the right. I'll grab his gun while you cover me, yeah?"
"Agreed."
Lau motioned for her to go ahead. "Right behind you," she said.
Melody whammed the guard on the back of the head and tossed a gun over to Lau.
Lau caught the gun and immediately took out the other two closest to them. She made sure to disarm them without killing them, although she figured if she did kill one, it wouldn't be too bad. They were Nazis, after all. She rolled to one of the ones she shot and dragged him to his feet, aiming the gun at his chin. "Nobody move or I'll blow his brains out," she shouted at the other guards.
Melody ran up, bellowing a war cry, and knocked several guards out, shooting a few others. "For freedom! Justice! And beating the shit out of Nazi assholes!"
"Amen!" Lau said, shoving the guard away from her. Mel had cleared the rest of the guards. "Let's keep going."
Unfortunately, Melody got shot in the right leg and shoulder whilst doing this. "Ow!"
"Damn it," Lau muttered, turning to Melody. "C'mon, lean on me. We gotta get out of here. Hopefully get you a doctor."
"Doctor? Doctor… what? Why? I'm fine."
"Don't be stubborn," Lau said, "you're hurt." She didn't wait for Mel to answer. She wrapped her arm around the other girl's shoulders and led her out of the prison.
"I'm fine. A little banged up, but fine."
"Two gunshot wounds are a liiiitle more than 'a little banged up'," Lau snorted, rolling her eyes.
"As I said, fine. Really, I'll be okay."
Lau shoved her off to the side as some guards approached, ducking into an alley. She pinned her against the wall. "Listen," she whispered, "If you bleed out in Nazi Germany, that's on me. I don't want to feel guilty for the rest of my life. Let's get you some help, yeah? Don't fight me on this."
"Right, fine. Mom."
"Ugh. Responsibility. I'm allergic." Lau groaned, letting Melody go. "This way." She led the way out of the alley, still supporting her friend.
Melody slid out of Lau's grasp and walked along, slightly faster than her companion.
"So damn stubborn," Lau muttered under her breath. "Any ideas on where to go?"
"Away. We still have our vortex manipulators, we can repair them and then leave."
"Easier said than done," she replied. "It's the forties. No tech."
"America invented computers to fight Hitler during this time period."
"Let me reiterate. No advanced tech."
