"Who are your grandparents? I know everyone in this town."
"Who are your grandparents? I know everyone in this town."
"Uh, the Pinkly's," Sheileh fibbed. This was getting worse and worse.
"OK, no. You need to stop lying to me."
Sheileh huffed, "I frequently change homes," it wasn't exactly a lie.
"No, the Pinkly's don't live in Riverview Heights. They live in Seaside Bay."
"I do. I never said anything about anyone else," Sheileh pointed out. She flicked her tail out of frustration, not realizing it for a few seconds before shoving it back out of the human's point of view.
"You said your granparents - the Pinkly's - live around here. They actually live in Seaside Bay. And was that a tail?"
"Hm? Oh, that was all a lie. I don't have a specific place I live," Sheileh brushed it off, "And yeah, I'm pretty sure I felt a fish brush my leg."
"No, it was a physical tail. And it was attached to you."
"That's absurd," Sheileh bit her lip. This wasn't getting any better.
"No, it's not. My mother told me stories about mermaids when I was younger. She was saved by one too."
Sheileh swore under her breath. She put her head underwater to her eyes and looked at the human. She knew she should be swimming away, but she stayed.
"I can still see you!"
"Yeah, I know. I'm not stupid," Shieleh said after coming up, then ducked back under, her beading eyes staring at the human. She was interesting.
Mia stood up and waded into the water.
Sheileh dashed back, keeping her distance. She was skeptical to trust the human, eyes narrowed.
Mia dived under water.
Sheileh dove under the water, watching the human. She was curious as to what was happening.
Mia came up, her curly hair around her shoulders.
Sheileh came up as well, watching the human. She was still a bit reluctant to be near the human.
"You're a mermaid," Mia said bluntly.
"No duh, you pointed it out earlier, didn't you?" Sheileh spat. She backed up.
"Well, yeah, but you denied it."
"Well, yeah. Wouldn't you?" Sheileh pointed out.
"No, not really. Being a mermaid would be cool."
