Myst
I examine my new team, happy with the people Meredith picked for me. I knew they would try their best, they appear to already be curious as to how this will play out, and their roles seem to have been picked respectively. The more they talked the more of a team they seemed to be. I smirk as they converse, looking over at Meredith with a pride in my eye.
Yuki
"So, do we have a plan? Where do we start? Do you have any suspects?" I start drilling Myst and Meredith with strategic questions, my mind wondering why I've seemed to accept this new job after living-well, whatever you call this-in this underworld for so long and spending most of my lonely nights at the bar, but deep down I knew I need this new adventure to do something with myself; I was growing restless and bored.
Roger
The skinny guy with glasses started asking several questions, causing me to furrow my brow at him.
"Calm down, I think you're going too fast." Glasses, who's name I believe is Yuki, turns and looks at me.
"Too fast? I'm asking where to start."
I chuckle and shrug.
"I'm saying we're only getting to know each other; we haven't even started yet."
Wyatt
I glanced back and forth between Yuki and Roger. If this group were to work together in the future, we needed to know the ins and outs of each other's personalities. Considering the situation, the terrorist group has made no alarming threat yet, therefore we had time to sort things out. "I agree with Roger. It will be easier to figure out a plan if we get to know one another."
Marina
I listened in on the conversation, still slightly disoriented. To wake up from death so quickly was not something I experienced on a daily basis. Oh, boy. It was interesting to find out that the underworld had issues. I wondered if this place was a heaven or a hell. According to my life choices, it felt more hellish, but the people seemed to kind. I guess heaven and hell don't exist then. I waited for the group to decide on our next step, fixing my hair in the process.
Rai
My eyes flickered to each person. They were all so different. Meredith chose a super diverse group. As I watched them, I attempted to remember their names. Myst was the black haired one. Roger was the tan one. Yuki was the one with funny glasses and blue hair. Marina was the pink one, and Wyatt was the green one.
"Let's get to know each other," I chimed in.
Myst
I nod my head in succession.
"Alright, in a few words, what do you think your first line of action should be in uncovering the identity of the leader of the organization?"
I watch as everyone's eyes flicker in thought. Hopefully this would spark a conversation to further introduce the team to each other, especially helping me to learn who these people are.
Yuki
After a few people inserted their unsolicited opinion on the matter that we should introduce ourselves before diving into the project that we came here for in the first place, Myst, the leader, asked what our first plan of action should be, and I immediately knew the answer.
"Research. Interview people, suspicious or not, to gain information."
Roger
Myst was the first to speak after everyone concluded we should introduce ourselves.
"Alright, in a few words, what do you think your first line of action should be in uncovering the identity of the leader of the organization?"
Almost as soon as she finished the question, Yuki responded.
"Research. Interview people, suspicious or not, to gain information."
In the time that it took me to think of an answer, a few people had already come up with their own response.
"Process of elimination."
Wyatt
Many answers ran through my head, as I sorted through the best one. These people must hide somewhat well, so they could probably fake their identity and such. The best solution here seems to be, "We should use spies. Don't let them know we're onto them, or they'll hide more."
Marina
I flickered my eyes past each speaker. Their ideas were good, but I didn't know what would be the best approach. I was a fighter, not a strategist. I'll leave them to plan, for now. Everyone's eyes were on me, but I shook my head. "I don't know." I knew they needed as many ideas as possible, but my mind drew a blank.
Rai The blue one, and the green one, seemed to have the best ideas. However, I had the best one. I stared at the ground for a moment, pretending to ponder over paths we could take. Finally, I glanced up at Myst, seeing as she was the leader.
"Why don't we try all of it? There's no harm, and perhaps it would help." I waited for the group to react and choose what we should do.
Myst
Everyone suggested their ideas, filling me with excitement for what the future holds for us. As each option is thrown out, I raise an eyebrow.
Lastly, Rai speaks.
"Why don't we try all of it?" An expression of curiosity but consideration fills my face. Rai continues. "There's no harm, and perhaps it would help."
I look around at the other people, who's faces seemed to communicate that they weren't opposed to the idea.
I clap my hands and raise my shoulders.
"Well? Let's get started, then. I think we should work in teams to cover more ground. Wyatt and Yuki, you'll be together, Roger and Marina, you two together, and I'll go with Rai."
Yuki
Suddenly, things start happening, and Myst is grouping everyone together into teams of two, tagging me along with the kid who's name I believe is Wyatt, to go out into the town and interview and interrogate various people to gather information, and hopefully to find someone in the organization to get them to leak various secrets about the group.
Roger
Myst claps her hands with a smile on her face, grouping us with different people.
"Roger and Marina, you two together." That was the only part I remembered as we were showed to the door and instructed to do the best we could. Process of elimination? I turn to Marina and start with, "How long since you've been here? In this underwater world?"
Wyatt
I got paired with the quirky blue-haired boy. I prayed he would get the job done, and not mess around, although he seemed rather serious about it. I glanced at Yuki. "We should start at a local bar of some sorts. Easiest place to find information." Seeing as Myst wanted to start as soon as possible, I planned to ask Yuki about his past on the way to our designated area.
Marina
I looked up at Roger, who I noticed was the tallest out of the group, him and Yuki.
"How long since you've been here? In this underwater world?" he asked. I played with a string of my hair, pretending to ponder.
"It's only been a couple weeks for me, so I guess I'm still new to it. How about you?" As I talked, I admired his orange, soft looking hair. His eyes maintained a deep green color, and he had a intimidating, serious expression.
Rai
I smiled at Myst. I get to work with the leader! I wonder if she chose the partners at random, or if they were on purpose. If they were on purpose, I am flattered to work with her.
I walked over to where she was standing. "So, what's our plan going to be? I do hope you had a plan in mind." All the other groups began to converse, making me excited. I can't wait to get started. I rubbed my palms together, awaiting Myst's instructions.
Myst
Rai strolls up to me, a positive energy radiating from her.
"So, what's our plan going to be? I do hope you had a plan in mind." I grin and nod at her.
"You remember Raz, from when you first got here? He's a bit of a troublemaker, I'd like to talk to him first, see if he knows any fellow troublemakers."
Yuki
I nod my head at Wyatt, who suggested that we start at a bar nearby, which caused me to turn my head and scan the area around us for a place of such, my eyes catching a sign that said in big letters, "Cornelia's Liquor". I turn my head back to Wyatt and muttered, "How about we start there?" Before starting my way toward the building.
Roger
Marina spoke in a thoughtful voice.
"It's only been a couple weeks for me, so I guess I'm still new to it. How about you?"
I nod my head to indicate that I was listening, as I respond to her question.
"Few months I suppose. Haven't really gotten involved with the people of the city quite yet, still figuring myself out."
Her response, couple weeks, which means she probably couldn't be part of the organization. One down.
Wyatt
We began at a place called 'Cornelia's Liquor.' Yuki stepped in first. The bar was bland, not far from the standard. A few old people here and there, and some possibly drunk kids. We made our way to the bartender and sat down. "Whiskey, for me," I ordered. I waited for Yuki to get a drink, before we start questioning the people.
Marina
I resisted the urge to run my fingers through his hair. It just looked so soft. "Few months I suppose. Haven't really gotten involved with the people of the city quite yet, still figuring myself out." I looked at him curiously, wondering how we were to use process of elimination if neither of us knew any of the residents here.
"Figuring yourself out?" I questioned.
Rai
I recalled the boy named Raz. He was the first person I met here, other than Brent. Judging from his prank, he was definitely a rowdy kid. Surely he knows something! I nodded in agreement to Myst. "Lead the way!" Myst smiled and began walking in a specific direction. "So, where is he, exactly?"
Myst
I ponder Rai's question.
"Hmm, it's about six pm, so his shift for welcoming new people is over. He should be at his house if he's not in the arcade. First we'll check his house." I lead the way through the town square and make a sharp right turn, entering a neighborhood area. After passing a few houses, we reach Raz's house.
Yuki
"Whiskey, for me," Wyatt ordered, as he sat down on a bar stool and we both turned to scan the bar itself, making eye contact with a few of the customers, but oddly enough there wasn't much of an ominous vibe resonating with this particular location; something I have experienced before in several different pubs.
"Make that two." I add before the bartender turns around to prepare our drinks.
Roger
"Figuring yourself out?" Marina responded, causing me to nod as we started walking aimlessly into the town square.
"Yeah, accepting death, but trying to get used to the afterlife. I have many questions. For one, if the Queen is so worried about the citizen's safety, that suggests that this isn't heaven, and there's a death in this world, which leads me to believe that there's a life after this afterlife. The thought often keeps me up at night." I look back at her, realizing I rambled.
Wyatt
I scanned the bar, but there was no way of telling who seemed suspicious. I decided to turn to the bartender, wondering if they knew anything. The bartender was Cornelia herself, a woman of hair almost black, if it weren't for the light indicating it's blue hue.
"So, what is your stance on politics here? I'm new, and I want to learn more about how they run things in this world." I asked innocently.
Marina
I smiled, glad to have met someone who didn't adjust automatically. "Ah, I see. My theory so far is that this isn't any type of afterlife. I think it's a whole different universe of souls that happened to drown. Almost like, your death on Earth determines what universe you get to live in next. I don't know though. I'm still wondering how my family and friends are grieving. What was your life on Earth?"
As we neared a park full of people, I realized we had gotten off track from the mission. But, I wanted to learn more about Roger, my partner, first. We had plenty of time to find the traitors.
Rai Raz's house was pretty average; a quaint little house that was painted, like, a faded blue, or something. Fitting for one person, I suppose. We walk up onto the creaking porch and I ring the doorbell. After a small silence, the door swung open, but with Brent instead of Raz. Maybe they live together? I smiled, "Brent! Is Raz there?"
Yuki
Wyatt initiated a conversation with the bartender.
"So, what is your stance on politics here? I'm new, and I want to learn more about how they run things in this world." I turned to look away from the customers and watched the lady, Cornelia, react.
"Politics? It's a monarchy, it's not like the opinion of the citizens matter, but I know Meredith is trying her best, though it stresses her out often."
Cornelia sighed heavily as if she remembered something.
"Did you know she was the first to arrive down here? In the underwater world? You don't age anymore, so no one really knows how long she's been here, but she adapts to the time, except when it comes to politics." She paused, looking to the ground.
"Despite constantly coming to me, her "girlfriend" Myst, and some guy she claims is her mentor, Meredith makes the final decisions around here."
I look at Wyatt to see what he thinks about her response. He really sparked a conversation out of her with one question.
Roger
Marina and I begin to enter a park, and we follow the sidewalk that outlined it as we spoke.
"Ah, I see. My theory so far is that this isn't any type of afterlife. I think it's a whole different universe of souls that happened to drown. Almost like, your death on Earth determines what universe you get to live in next. I don't know though. I'm still wondering how my family and friends are grieving. What was your life on Earth?"
That was actually quite a good question, so I take a moment to think about it.
"It was nice, I suppose. I had a girlfriend, she was real sweet. I was actually on a boat ride with some friends of mine. We were drinking, a few dared me to swim as deep as I could, so that's kind of how I ended up here. I actually-" I paused, remembering the first week and a half waiting to see if any of my friends would arrive as well, which would mean that they tried to save me, but no one followed me.
"How about you? What was your life like?"
Myst
Rai rang the doorbell as we waited. A few moments of silence passed before we heard heavy footsteps, too heavy to be Raz's. To my surprise, Brent opened the door.
"Brent! Is Raz there?" Rai asked with a bright smile.
Brent inhaled sharply, shaking his head.
"He's on a walk, I left something here so I asked if I could stop by and steal it back. Where are you headed next? If I see him I could let you know you're looking for him." I nod at Brent as he does a small bow to us as he walks off. Brent has always been a bit of a gentleman with a caring heart, and it's little things he does that I've noticed not everyone else does. I smile back to him as I look over at Rai.
"Well? Maybe we should go to the arcade next. If anyone knows Raz, they know he'll always end up there. It's like he has a gravitational pull towards it." I smirk at Rai as we make our way downtown.
Wyatt
I rubbed my chin, taking in the woman's answers. From the looks of it, she must be pretty close with Meredith. I wonder how they know she was the first. That must mean, people don't die here. Or she murdered the other people who lived here, so she could become queen. Or, maybe she truly is the first.
I smiled at Cornelia, nodding my head. "Why does she lead, if it stresses her out? I'm sure there are other capable here."
Marina
I cocked my head, gazing up at Roger. So, the boy had a girlfriend. I looked away and mentally slapped myself. I already lived a life full of lovers on Earth, maybe I shouldn't have that stupidity follow me here. Still, I couldn't help but want to flirt and make all of them fall for me.
The park stretched into a nature trail, but neither of us noticed. "I don't mean to brag, but it was glamorous. At least, that's what people think it is. I was born with a silver spoon, and good looks, so I guess that means I have a perfect life or whatever. To be honest, I was rather lost…" I frowned, realizing I opened up too much again. Where was my usual, prideful self? "I died because I drowned from surfing. There are some mean waves out there, I thought I could take it. Ha! Guess not!"
Rai Brent was there, and not Raz. How utterly disappointing! Myst must feel the same way. Or not, I don't assume. To my surprise, she smirked. "Well? Maybe we should go to the arcade next. If anyone knows Raz, they know he'll always end up there. It's like he has a gravitational pull towards it." All right! I nodded my head, ready to check out more of the city. We made our way east. Finally, the arcade stood in front of us, neon lights flashing oh-so-brightly. "Looks fun! Do we get to play games on the job?"
Yuki
"Why does she lead, if it stresses her out?" Wyatt began, rubbing his chin as we exchange glances. "I'm sure there are other capable here."
I nod, feeling the need to contribute to the conversation, but also feeling a slight temptation to remain the silent one.
"Why doesn't she change her methods to a democracy or even a bureaucracy?"
Cornelia looked from Wyatt to me and then back to Wyatt, smirking.
"Meredith was born in a time much earlier than the rest of us. Monarchy is the only method she's comfortable with. We've all suggested other forms and she'd blush and say she doesn't understand all the aspects even after we've explained them to her."
Roger
Marina began to explain her life as I listened closely, taking in every detail she spoke and giving her a nod when she paused. After a moment of recollection, she looked back at me and said, "I died because I drowned from surfing. There are some mean waves out there, I thought I could take it. Ha! Guess not!"
I smile and process her response.
"So you surfed? How was that like?" I asked, attempting to further dive into getting to know this girl.
Myst
I chuckle as Rai asks if we're allowed to play games.
"I guess we could knock out a few aliens if we have extra time, but we should get back to the town center before dinner time. Meredith plans on having us all meet up in the castle for a big meal as we discuss everything and answer any more questions." We walk into the arcade, the sounds of space guns, cars, and other unnatural noises filling the air. My eyes scan the area to fall upon Raz, his eyes focused on the screen as determination flashed in his eyes, along with the different flashes in the game.
"There you are Raz! I've got a few questions for you." I say, leaning against the side of the arcade machine.
Wyaattt
"To answer your question," Cornelia made eye contact with me. "Meredith may not be a very political person, but she does have a goal - keeping this place safe and comfortable to live in. We wouldn't want a tyrant running this place." I nod, trying to think of more questions, but I figured being straightforward was the best approach.
"Does everyone like her? There must be somebody who would rather rule you would think."
Marina's fucking ass
I rubbed my nails together, a bit uncomfortable talking about myself so much. Most boys would just chat on and on about their lives, but I supposed I preferred them talking over me.
"Surfing is… relaxing. Makes you feel badass, and you can get all your thoughts out there. It's just you and the waves. But, this is an ocean, so I don't know if I could surf ever again." I stopped in my tracks, realizing we should turn back and start investigating. "Let's head back, there won't be any people to eliminate in some seaweed forest. While we walk, what do you like to do?"
bitch
I pouted, a bit disappointed. We probably won't have time to play games. Oh, but that one looks cool! And that one! I bet Myst would destroy that one!
We maneuvered through the arcade machines to where Raz was. His eyes flickered momentarily at us. "Woah, wait, let me finish this game. I'm about to win." This kid, I swear.
Myst shrugged at me, and I covered the screen with my hands. Raz screamed and death sounds blared from the machine. The poor boy groaned, burying his face in his hands. Gotcha. "What do you two need?"
