"Is this it?" Oliver held up an insulin pump he'd found under the desk, whacking his stood as he stood up. "Ow!" He whined, but was being more dramatic than actually hurt.
"Is this it?" Oliver held up an insulin pump he'd found under the desk, whacking his stood as he stood up. "Ow!" He whined, but was being more dramatic than actually hurt.
"Yes. Yes!" Dove grabbed it. "Thanks."
"Of course." Oliver nodded, curling back up in a chair.
Caroline's breathing was speeding up, imagining all the worst scenarios. Briar had died on the operation table; Briar's spinal cord had snapped; Briar was paralyzed; Briar's brain had been damaged in the fall. She put her head in her hands, a fresh flood of guilty tears flowing down. And her pager buzzed again.
"The Kents want the operation as soon as possible."
She collapsed into herself and shakily stood up. She couldn't let a patient down, could she?
"Tu es vraiment mignon et j'aimerais ne pas tomber amoureux aussi facilement, mais bon sang, tu es tellement incroyable et précieux, je ne peux pas m'en empêcher," Dove whispered, hoping he didn't hear and hoping Dr. Horne didn't know French.
Oliver blinked, not understanding a word. "Is that French? You can speak French? I wish I could speak a foreign language." He pouted afterwards, a bit jealous. "Can you teach me how to say something cool?" He perked up, a pleading look in his eyes. Anything to forget about what happened earlier. His smile was a little too forced for comfort.
"Sure." Dove smiled, "What do you want to know how to say?"
"Umm…" Oliver had no idea, but he was still excited to learn something new. "I dunno… Got any ideas?" He asked, shrugging.
"Let's say..That cat is cute." Dove waited for Dr. Horne to respond.
Oliver nodded, grateful that Dove was humoring him. Right now she was the distraction that he desperately needed.
"Ce chat est mignon," Dove said.
"Ce chat es mig-nom?" Oliver cringed as he heard his own butchered pronunciation.
Dove laughed, "No, watch my lips and my throat. Ce chat es mignon."
Oliver watched her speak, her pink lips slowly forming the words so he could understand them. "Ce chat est mignon." He repeated, making eye contact with Dove.
"Awesome!" Dove grinned, "What else?"
Oliver brightened at the praise. He sat cross legged in the chair, taking his hair out of the small ponytail that rested at the nape of his neck. The choppy black locks immediately went in front of his face. Oliver fixed his hair while thinking. "How about… I like surfing. I haven't been in ages…"
"J'aime surfer," Dove said, "I'm not a surfer, though. I'm more of a book person."
"My parents used to take me when I was younger." Oliver replied absentmindedly, smiling softly at the memory. "I loved the beach more than anything." He laughed, sounding more bitter than happy. "Then they found out I was smart and shipped me off the med school. I haven't been to a beach since I graduated." He shook his head slightly, tightening the ponytail and leaning back.
Natalie walked into the room where Oliver and Dove were, exhaustion clearly written on her face. "Briar's going to be okay."
Dove smiled and then looked at the girl coming in. "Thank gosh!" Dove was happy, but she only knew the other doctors by name. They were something of a legend to her and today she'd actually met Dr. Horne! Granted, it wasn't under amazing circumstances and granted she met the others in weird circumstances as well…
(please please go tell that to Caroline she is still in the waiting room)
I’m BAAAAAAAACK))
"Wait, wait. What happened to Briar?" Oliver asked Dove, unsure of how long he'd been asleep for.
"Umm." Dove looked towards the Dr. Tamara.
Nat turned to him. "She fell out the window trying to save some stupid kid. Her surgery was one of my harder ones. I honestly didn't think that she'd wake up. She suffered some damage to her spinal cord. I've got to go tell Caroline and Briar's father the good news." She rubbed her hands over her face.
