“Som-Someone found out that they were like us. That person broke into our place one night while we were in bed. I heard a noise outside our room, so I got up and crept into the kitchen. Out parents were in their human forms when the person killed them. I was watching in horror, they luckily didn’t see me.” Rae had tears in her eyes. “I tried to get you out before you could see what happened.” She sniffed then turned away from Raven. She wiped her eyes.
Raven's eyes stung with tears and he looked away, heart pounding. He remembered hearing screams that night, and Rae quickly rushing him out of the house looking terrified. He could imagine his parents dying, knowing the only possible way people like them could die. The tears fell from his eyes, and he realized he was holding his breath after he started seeing stars. He wanted to say something, but words were useless right now.
Rae was crying.. “I still remember the man, although I try to forget. I could’ve done something. Yet I just stared and watched them die.” She blamed herself.
Raven tried to speak, but he coughed, his breath catching in his throat. "T… t-there's nothing you could have done… h-he would have… would've killed you, too…" He tried to brush the tears away from his eyes, but they kept returning.
“I love you Raven. I won’t ever leave you alone In life.” Rae said.
Raven hugged Rae again, "I-I love you too… imagine… imagine what would have happened to me if you'd been k-killed?"
“Trust me. I’ve imagined every way that could have gone. You being alone is one of the worst.” Rae said.
Imagine, you, a helpless twelve year old wolf boy, left alone after everyone died? Be quiet! You're just making me more upset! That is sort of my job, is it not? No! Raven leaned against Rae. I would have died too, after they were gone. I'd have no way to take care of myself, and no doubt I would be in shock too. I would starve to death and not even notice. More tears fell from his eyes.
Rae hugged Raved when he leaned against her. “I’ll never let you be alone.” She whispered.
Yeah, and she wonders why you were so worked up when you thought she had left. Shut up! Raven closed his eyes, trying to get the horrible voice out of his head. He wasn't sure whether it was his conscience or not, but it never made him feel good by any standards.
"I'll be there to protect you." Rae whispered. "I'll use my spoon, my deadliest weapon, if I have to." She said slightly jokingly.
Raven nodded, not really comprehending what Rae was saying. He imagined his parents again and flinched, squeezing his eyes shut.
"It's okay." Rae could tell he was uncomfortable. She stroked his back. "I won't let anyone hurt you."
His eyes opened. Stop thinking about them, it just makes it worse… Great observation, stupid. Pointing out the obvious as usual. Leave me alone!
"Hey, you okay?" Rae said with sincerity.
"I'm…" Are you really fine, though? "I-I don't know, Rae…"
“Let’s think about something else.” Rae said, trying to change the subject.
Raven nodded. "Like what?"
“Like…” Rae looked for something else to talk about. “Ice cream. I always have some sad ice cream in the freezer just in case.” She walked over to the kitchen and got two bowls, spoons, and some ice cream.
"Sad ice cream? You must get sad a lot to need designated ice cream." Raven laughed weakly.
“It can also be used as celebration ice cream or angry ice cream.” Rae responded with a slight laugh.
Raven sat at the counter, still looking tired. He wished he was able to sleep through the night.
“Did you get any sleep?” Rae asked. She filled the bowls with some ice cream and put a spoon in both.
