"Oh. Well, do you like my idea? I feel like they'd believe us, if we wrote it right."
"Oh. Well, do you like my idea? I feel like they'd believe us, if we wrote it right."
“I do, it might work but we’d have to think carefully and we don’t have a lot of time.”
"Argh." Bernon rummaged in his backpack and pulled out his notebook. "Just give me a second. I'll catch up with you."
Mike came out of his room, wearing a dark-colored jacket. He glanced at them and jerked his head at the stairs. "Ready?"
"Almost," Bernon replied, ducking into his room with the note. "I'll be right there."
“Don’t be long, do you need the fake machine?” She asked, reaching into her bag and pulling the machine out.
"Yeah, thanks." Bernon took it and laid it out carefully on is bed next to the note, then added some last lines to the page and hurriedly joined them in the hall. "Okay, let's go."
“Luckily- actually I’m not gonna say that becuase then it will happen.” Tanrial said, shaking her head as they walked down the hallway.
Bernon grinned nervously. "Hee, yeah, don't jinx us."
Wren was hopping from foot to foot when they arrived. "About time! Let's go. Casper said we're clear on the next two flights of stairs, but they won't stay empty for long."
Tanrial nodded, “Let’s not waste any more time then.”
They headed up the stairs as quickly and quietly as possible. At one point there was the sound of footsteps, but they didn't enter the landing.
"Almost there," Wren hissed.
(off to bed, seeya later! ^^)
“How much longer?”
"One more flight of stairs." Wren paused to catch her breath. "Once we reach the top, there's a couple hallways we have to go through before we hit a side door. Casper will run ahead and make sure the way is clear, and he'll also unlock the door so you won't have to linger long." She straightened and continued on. "Once you're outside, head straight west towards the hills behind the facility. The edge of our property is closest on that side. Don't stop until you're sure you're all the way out, or farther if you're able."
“It shouldn’t take too long if we shift, Bernon. Once we’re far enough away shift as quick as you can, alright?” She said, raising an eyebrow at Bernon.
"Yeah, got it."
They reached the top of the stairs and Casper waved at them from the far end of the hall.
"And go," Wren hissed.
Tanrial sprinted downt the corridor, hoping that the others were following. It didn’t take long before they had reached the other side.
Casper ushered them around the corridor and down another hall, then into a small anteroom with a bolted metal door in one wall.
"Did you get it open?" Wren asked.
Casper nodded.
"Okay, go on guys." She paused and glanced at them. "Don't forget to come back, okay?"
“We won’t forget, I doubt Bernon would let us live if we did anyway.” She said with a slight smile.
She returned the smile, wryly. "All right. Good luck."
Mike and Bernon had the door open by now, letting in a breath of fresh, dark forest air. "Ready," Mike said. "Let's go."
Tanrial nodded before sprinting out into the forest, not able to shift yet as the clearing wasn’t big enough. It was about a mile or so until she shifted, slowing down a little so Mike could jump on.
Mike did so, and Bernon shifted as well, running with surprising speed through the more widely-spaced trees. Try to pace yourself, he reminded. We can't slow down when we reach the steeper slopes.
I know, don’t worry. She replied, looking over at Bernon for a moment before back to the path they were following.
They must have made it to the surface without being spotted, because there was no shouts or sign of pursuit from behind them. The woods were all pink and gold and deep blue from the first rays of the sun, and the birds were not quiet at this hour. At one point they ran through a glen and startled a herd of deer, but otherwise nothing crossed their path.
After about twenty minutes of running, they reached the top of the giant hill they'd been climbing and stopped to catch their breaths. Mike hopped off Tanrial's back and surveyed the still-in-shadow landscape ahead of them. "We'll hit the great lakes if we keep heading this way for another day, and last I checked there was a string of fishing villages in that area where we could possibly find our first allies."
Tanrial nodded, Okay, sounds like a good plan… what if they aren’t there? Where would our next potentional allies be
"Mmmm…hard to say. It'll be tough to even get people interested, to be honest. We might try one of the Southern Clans that doesn't want to kill us, if the lakes don't work out."
(gotta go for tonight, seeya ^^)
Okay, cool Tanrial huffed a sigh.
