"Yeeeaah." Wren led them down the hall to a larger room. "Some of them are in cuter stages of development than others."
Before them was a row of tanks, each lit and humming gently. Inside each one was a small, vaguely humanoid figure, ranging in size from embryo to unborn child. Electronic readouts on the tanks recorded a slough of data, most of which meant nothing to the untrained eye.
"Check out this guy," Wren said, tapping on one of the tanks. "See the mottling on his skin? That's vitiligo. Whatever they were going for with his genes must have been linked to genes in his skin, otherwise they'd have never allowed such an imperfection."
Bernon looked vaguely repulsed. "I don't know how I feel about this. This feels like…..disrespecting life itself. Do you think so, Mike?"
Mike stared at the tanks, his expression unreadable. "I don't know about disrespectful, but dangerous, I can believe. Who knows what crazy powers those kids will have."

“Whatever it is, I don’t want t be around to find out of thinks get out of hand with them.” Tanrial muttered, looking at a child with darker skin and silver hair, “How many are there altogether?” she asked

"How many down here, you mean? Just five. From what I understand it's a ridiculously difficult process and there's a good chance that some of them won't even survive outside their tanks. But suppose they do…." Wren counted. "Five plus fourteen other loyal kids equals nineteen, or twenty-one if he manages to convert Casper and I. His personal army is growing."
"So, I'm confused," Mike interjected. "Does he plan to physically replace every human with one of these kids? There's not many of us left, but there's still gotta be at least a few million in this country alone."
"Well, I heard the scientists talking. They said they made the genes that give us powers super dominant, so any kids we have are very likely to get them as well. I'm betting his plan is to build cities with us in charge, then refuse citizenship to anyone with real magic, so the gene pool's reduced only to Humans #1 and Humans #2. I hear he might set up labs like this in the cities too, so they can have more test-tube babies whenever they want."

Wren shrugged. "I'm not sure what his plans for your kind are. I haven't heard anything to the effect of "kill them all", but I doubt he will leave you alone completely. He talks a lot about fighting the injustice of tyrannical magic-users and restoring balance and peace between the races, but it's anyone's guess how aggressive he'll be about it."

"It all hinges on the data drive you brought," Wren continued. "Right now the tech here might look impressive, but we're actually very limited in what we can do. The data drive has enough info and stuff to enable us to build fully-fledged cities with everything they need, including communications and transport between them. Ryker plans to kickstart the economy by creating a ton of jobs and then sustain the community by very carefully controlling it. He can't do that stuff without hiring experts, and he can't hire experts unless he trains them up using the data drive. So…a good start might be to keep the drive away from him."
"But not destroy it," Bernon added. "That knowledge is invaluable, if it's in the right hands."

@ElderGod-Carrots

“Right, we won’t destroy it but… do you have an idea of what Ryker might do to us when he finds out the one we are planning to give him is a fake?”

Wren frowned. "I have no doubt that he would gently and compassionately lock us in the dungeon and take the real drive away from us by force. I'd rather not let that happen."
"So we take the drive and run," Mike said. "Get out before he realizes what we did."
Bernon glanced reluctantly at the tanks nearby. "What about all the kids and prisoners here, though? We can't just leave them…."

Bernon remained silent, his chin jutting out the way it did when he was resisting the urge to speak his mind. Wren looked somewhat conflicted as well, no doubt thinking of her siblings. Mike glanced back and forth between them, then spoke.
"We don't have to leave forever. At this point we may not be able to completely shut down Ryker, but if we get the drive to safety we can regroup and maybe find some allies of our own, then head back in to get the others. How does that sound?"

@Young-Dusty-the-Monarch-of-Dusteria group

Mike nodded. "In that case we should get our stuff and leave before the sun's up. The bigger head start we get the better."
"Yeah," Wren said. "Casper and I will help you get out, but I think he and I should stay here. We can be your spies on the inside, and gather more info about the weaknesses of this place."

@Young-Dusty-the-Monarch-of-Dusteria group

They left the room and made their way back through the labs and prison hall, careful to close and lock each door behind them as they went. Once in the stairwell, Casper went invisible and dashed up ahead of them to scout for danger. Wren warned them that the upper floors would be trickier to bypass since there were usually guards on duty. "We have to get back to your rooms to collect your things, but otherwise these stairs are almost a straight shot to the surface," She said. "Stealth is our only advantage right now. If we're seen, they'll know we're up to something and put this place on lock-down before we can escape. And trust me, nothing gets out when a lock-down happens."

@ElderGod-Carrots

Tanrial nodded, “Let’s get going then.” She said taking the stairs two at a time and back up to the hall, trying to look as innocent as possible.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Tanrial shot a knowing glance over her shoulder and set down the hall back to her room, watching for any of Wren’s siblings. She passed un-noticed and quietly shut her door and pack her things as quickly as she could.

"Oh. Well, that could still work. I had this idea that might buy us some time: if we leave a note here, we could avoid any suspicion for a while. It could say something like, "thanks for your hospitality, but the mountains are calling and we must move on", or…something like that. I was gonna say let's leave the note next to the fake so they know for sure we didn't just take off, but I guess if you already gave it to Ryker then it's no big deal. Think it's worth a shot?"
