—–The Night Before—–
The male sat behind the wooden desk, pen in hand. He appeared to be scribbling down notes upon several papers, another pile set to the side on the edge of the desk. The man's green eyes looked over parchment before him, suddenly lifting his other arm. The left arm covered in a metallic gauntlet, running down to cover the entirety of his arm and hand. A soft yawn escaped his maw, using the hand to cover his mouth.
He leaned back in the office chair, eyes moving to stare at the ceiling. Damn, just how long had he been here? Ugh, desk work sucked major…it just sucked. His gaze shifted for a moment, looking towards the windows, noting how dark it was outside now. Night had come, and yet here he still was, working grave shift.
The male much preferred it when he had calls, least gave him something to do, get out of here. Well, there was the sanctuary he took care of, but part of that job meant being here in this office space to keep things up to date. New creatures coming in, others that need to be relocated, new homes, others unable to leave, and so forth. One could say he ran a Wildlife refuge, but said 'wildlife', wasn't your every day kind.
No, the refuge was more for creatures of the mythical side of things. Yup, his side was filled with animals and beasts thought up only in fairytales. Dragons, griffins, you name it, he most likely had it at one point in time on his property.
His head turned, green eyes moving as he heard the soft sound of wings and a chirrup. Entering the room, was a small, fae-like creature. The little thing flitted over to the settled man, soon coming to rest upon his shoulder. Its long ears swayed a bit, tail coming to rest against its side.
As for the man, a tired smile crossed his features. His right hand moved, using a finger to lightly pet the top of the creature's small head, "Hey Eve, sorry if I woke ya."
The strange thing gave another chirrup, a soft, feminine voice suddenly speaking in his mind ~Not at all Ragnor. Just figured I better check on you~.
Eve tilted her head, ears twitching a bit. Her wings rustled behind, but remained folded neatly against her back. A look of concern seemingly crossed her features as she looked towards the man, her voice also confirming her concern ~Maybe YOU should be heading to bed Ragnor. You've spent nearly all day here. You haven't left this room once~.
"What do you mean? I got up to…"
~To use the bathroom, and get more coffee~ the creature huffed, finishing his sentence. Her bluish green eyes looked directly towards him, crossing her small arms in front of her chest.
The man gave a sheepish smile, moving his right hand to rub the back of his head, "A-alright…ya got me there. Just need to finish a few more things, then I'll go to bed, alright?"
Eve rolled her eyes, tail flicking. A low hum came from the creature, lifting upwards, letting her wings unfurl, gliding down to land on the desk. Her tail swept behind her as paw-like feet walked across the wooden surface. She suddenly stopped, looking up towards her owner, eyes narrowing.
~Ragnor…you remembered to take your tonic…didn't you? …RAGNOR~.
The sudden loud noise of his name in his mind jerked him back awake. He had actually started to slump downwards as Eve had moved. The man yawned again, rolling his shoulders back in a stretch. He looked towards his familiar, "Yea, first thing I did this morning."
~Ragnor…go.to.BED. If it'll put your mind at ease, I'll finish up here, alright~.
He looked down to the familiar. Ragnor started to open his mouth, getting ready to protest, but the look he received from the small creature made him shut it again. Instead, the man hung his head in defeat, a tired smile crossing his features. Yea, there was no point in arguing with her when she was this way.
So, he slowly stood up, walking over to the door that led to the halls. The man's hand took hold of the door handle, opening it with barely a sound. He paused, glancing back towards Eve.
"Hey, thanks Eve. I know you end up doing a lot of this…shit that I should really get done on my own…I need to make it up to you somehow."
The familiar gave a chirrup, waving a small paw ~YOU getting through the next few days will be more than enough for me, now go to sleep~.
Ragnor chuckled softly, giving a slight wave, then disappearing into the darkness of the building.
Oh no…ohnoohnoohno…
Eve was chirruping frantically. Oh dear, she made a wrong calculation, and that led to something that shouldn't have happened. Her chirps and cries had awoke Ragnor, the man stumbling to where the creature was in another room. Ugh, it had only been a few hours of sleep.
Appeared she was trying to keep things under control, but was failing miserably at it. He was still tired, trying his damnedest to fix the growing tear in the world before them. Drowsy and trying to focus, Ragnor never had time to react as a sudden chair came flying out of nowhere, the force of the sudden dimension tear causing the place to fall into disarray.
That heavy object collided instantly into his body, causing him to lose his stance, tumbling backwards into the darkness. Eve, in desperation, took off after her master.
—–That Could've Gone Better—–
Darkness, cold, and one hell of a headache. His eyelids fluttered opened, to only have white light shine down in a stunning brightness. Ragnor groaned, moving an arm to cover his eyes from the onslaught of light. He laid motionless for a few more moments, trying to remember what had exactly happened.
One moment he'd been laying in bed, then heard frantic chirps, Eve having trouble, and then just suddenly teleported to only the gods and goddesses knew where. Speaking of, where exactly was 'here'?
Slowly, he let his arm that had been covering his eyes slide off to the side. Ragnor found himself looking upwards towards a grayish sky. It was rather, hard to explain. It was as if there was no color at all…wait a minute, hell, the rest of this world seemed to be lacking colors. The plants around him, there was no greenery whatsoever. Just a drab grey, with some lighter hues of the color.
Ragnor proceeded to slowly sit up, but instead flopped back down again. Damn, that chair hit pretty damn hard. He felt lightheaded as soon as he tried to sit up, head screaming in pain, a wave of nausea rising in the pit of his stomach. Probably just a very mild concussion…or something like that. Hard remembering what had happened.
Chirping, frantic and worried. He felt something skittering close to his side, to only have the fae-like creature fluttering in his face. Her voice resonating in his skull, making it seem to rattle even more.
~Ragnor! Oh gods Ragnor, please tell me are alright, speak~.
The small familiar appeared on the verge of tears as she looked down at her partner. Jeez for being serious, the little thing could get so emotional at times. Eve continued to hover near his face, ears laid back as her chirps continued.
Ragnor lifted his arm, suddenly, very lightly, booping her gently on the nose, "Hey…chill…alright? Gonna take more than a chair to take me out."
Eve almost looked like she was getting ready to smack him, still on the verge of crying, but instead plopped down on his chest. Her wings were messily folded against her back, lifting one of her own arms to wipe away at her eyes. The creature's blue eyes looked towards Ragnor, hugging her knees closer to her chest.
~How am I suppose to 'chill' when you leave me in a nervous wreck all the time…~.
The male chuckled softly, moving his hand to lightly pet her head, "Hey, I don't try to, trust me. These things just seem to happen."
At his touch, a barely audible purr seemed to come from Eve. Her tail curled against her side, still hugging her body close in a curled up position. One of her ears twitched a bit, pausing now to look around at the monochrome world around them. The frown remained on her features, nothing familiar at all to her.
~I…I should be apologizing…I had no clue what happened…I'm sorry Ragnor…its my fault we ended up here…~.
Ragnor continued to lightly pet the small creature, not really feeling up to trying to getting up to his feet at the time. He instead let his green eyes remain staring at the blank sky above.
"Don't worry about it Eve. But, just give me a minute. That chair must've hit my head pretty hard, and any sudden movements of trying to get up leave me feeling ill."
Eve stood up on his chest, ears laid back ~Oh no…Ragnor…~
He waved his hand, "I'll be fine, really, don't worry Eve."
Despite his reassuring tone, the fae-like creature was clearly unconvinced. Her head looked left and right, scanning the area. So far, it seemed pretty quiet, no immediate dangers and so forth. They appeared to be in a field of some kind, just a guess, considering everything seemed to blend in, color wise anyways.
