@rot-baby-rot!
August hesitated by the door. "Rigel," he said in a low voice, "I didn't mean for it to come out that harsh. You don't have to do anything you'd rather not."
August hesitated by the door. "Rigel," he said in a low voice, "I didn't mean for it to come out that harsh. You don't have to do anything you'd rather not."
Aspen still had her eyes closed. She wasn’t sleeping, just mumbling something, ignoring anything else in the room
“No, you were right, I need to- I need to tell her,” Rigel replied quietly, almost choking on his own words. It’s fine, it’s okay… I just need to tell her… Heglanced at Aspen, but only for a second before looking back at the floor.
She was still clueless to her surroundings
"I- okay," he sent one last smile to Aspen before closing the door. He leaned against it as soon as it was closed. "Well, I probably screwed that up," he muttered, running a hand through his hair.
Rigel walked up to Aspen bedside, sighing, “Aspen, I— From before the crash— we need to talk.” He sat down, his face contorting slightly, but he finally schooled it into neutrality as he looked to Aspen.
Aspen opened an eye “yeah? What about it? It’s a little hazy but it’s there.” She said, still rubbing her arms
“I told you- I told you I killed Kate. I just didn’t want to taint that memory of her- she doesn’t deserve to be painted as someone who was involved with the black market, but when I thought you died- Gosh, I thought you died, Aspen, and you would’ve died being angry with me and the last thing I would’ve said to you would’ve been a lie and-“ Rigel cut himself off when he realized he had been rambling, taking a deep breath and looking at Aspen with shame, “I’m sorry, Aspen, I’m just so sorry…”
Aspen looked at him confused “What exactly did you lie about? Rigel, I’ve known you for years and though you may seem like it, I’ve never seen you lie. At least not to me.” Aspen said to him.
Rigel looked at the window -anywhere but at Aspen- as he said nervously, “But this time- this time I did, Aspen. I lied. I— I need to tell you a story.” He finally stated, trying to collect everything. He wanted to tell her everything, because if he kept it hidden any longer… Rigel needed to tell her everything.
(Maybe they confess after he reveals everything?)
“Alright, get comfy. You can climb in the other side of the bed if you want.” Aspen said, leaning back
(Sure, also sorry for the long post, he’s telling basically his whole life storrrrrrrrryy)
Rigel sat beside her on the bad and took a deep breath, then the words tumbled out, “I-“ Where could he even begin? “I wanted to find her body, Kate’s body. That’s why I was out digging up unmarked graves. I wanted to bring her back to her family, I wanted her to be buried properly. I wanted to turn myself in after that, to serve my time and rot in prison.” Rigel swallowed and wrung his hands, “Kate was everything to me. I wanted to marry her when I got old enough. I wanted to protect her, I couldn’t let anyone know she had anything to do with the black market. Her family couldn’t afford to get hospital treatment, their insurance wouldn’t cover it. So I reached out. I used to date Ren, currently one of Alfonzo’s men, and he had been into the drugs at the time when I dated him. I called him, found out he ended up working in the black market, and got a deal. Ren hooked me up with Jack, and then I had a dealer. One day, the order I made had gotten mixed up. Jack dealt me poison, not-“ Rigel’s voice broke slightly, but he kept his composure, “He didn’t give me Kate’s treatment. And Kate died in my arms in my apartment,” Rigel skipped over the part where he cried for hours over her body, “I went out that night and shot Jack dead. I was going to turn myself in for working in the black market, but Alfonzo was waiting in my apartment by the time I got back to get her body. Kate was gone. And Alfonzo explained how I killed a whole network of clients, all with one bullet. Then he explained that I would get those clients back, and if I ever thought of going to the police I wouldn’t even be able to dial 911 before the got to me. I tried once, not too long after Kate’s death, I had been in my apartment, but one of Alfonzo goons busted in and knocked me out. They taught me a lesson that night. They taught me a lot of things. So I fell into the swing of things, paying dues and getting clients, one by one. And now I’m— I’m here.” It was easier to hold in the tears this time, it was easier to not break down when he was with Aspen. Rigel took a deep breath, then finally looked at Aspen for hatred or disgust.
(This poor boy needs a hug)
(Like..numerous hugs…and some tea)
(aweeeeeeee this poor boy)
Aspen looked up at him and searched him for any signs of lying. Finding none, she surprised herself by wrapping her arms around his body “why haven’t you told anyone this? How did you live everyday in fear, knowing that if you stepped out of line just a little, you could get killed? Rigel—I— I’m sorry.” She said, still hugging him
Rigel, being held in Aspen, finally let himself cry a little more. They were silent tears, but he let himself let it out- just this once. “I— I didn’t want anyone else involved, I didn’t want anyone else hurt.” Rigel let himself sag, let himself show that weakness to Aspen, “I didn’t want— I didn’t want you hurt.”
Aspen stayed quiet and just listened. She could feel her eyes getting wet. Rigel, the tough nut of the group was hoarding so many emotions, and none of them realized.
Finally she let out a shaky laugh “have you seen me, I can’t get hurt. Maybe you can come with me and watch me train and fix any mistakes.” She tried to change the subject
“Aspen- I— But-“ Rigel struggled to form words, “Aspen I- I care about you. A lot,” He whispered, trying to keep himself together as he wiped at the tears that leaked out of his eyes.
“Well in a close knit group like this, caring is one thing that’s gonna happen.” She laughed lightly
“It’s-“ It’s more than that, I love you… “Aspen, you’ve— I was empty when Kate died. She was my everything, and— and— when I saw you crash, you- you were dead, and I don’t- I don’t know how do deal with someone I- I love dying again.” Rigel got out, the truth plain and clear. He laid himself bare to her, he told her everything.
“You—what? But—I…” she stuttered
Rigel looked away, expecting more rejection. “I— I’m sorry, I should go, I didn’t mean-“ He clenched his fists, moving to get up. This was a mistake…
Aspen grabbed his hand “no! I-I mean don’t go! You just surprised me. But why me? I’m just boring old, accident prone Aspen.” She smiled weakly that was the stupidest joke. Aspen, you idiot she thought
Rigel looked at her, then at their joined hands, then finally whispered, “Aspen, you’re amazing, you’re funny, and I trust you more than anything. I— I love you.” He smiled, just a little bit, and finally noticed how close they were.
