(So they're doing an initiation testing all their skills?)
(Yeah, to see if they make it into the guild)
(Okay, I see.)
Cyrus stood watching, and he was worried about the initiation. Everyone expected him to pass with ease, just because his parents had been assassins here. However, he had no such faith in himself. He had a few specific skills, but he perhaps wasn't as well-rounded as the guild wanted. Cyrus walked up to throw knives at the dummy, and he just barely grazed one side of it, just as he feared would happen. His confidence having taken a hit, Cyrus went on to the next station, where a few other weapons were lined up. He selected a crossbow and hoped for the best. He placed a bolt into the crossbow and stared ahead at the target. When he was finally mentally prepared, he let the bolt fly, and he hit the target, but not with dead accuracy. He had hit on one of the inner rings- the one adjacent to a bullseye. Although this was nowhere close to perfect, he sure was relieved, after his failure at throwing knives.
"thanks!" sparrow grinned at Eira, her heart felt like it would break out of her chest. she turned to face the next boy who looked as if he was going to the medical part of the initiation, the one where you had to make a splint and relocate a dislocated shoulder
.No sea así, no es tu culpa. De todos modos, buena suerte en la iniciación. Estaré aquí." She said in encouragement and patted her on the shoulder before getting ready for her turn.y
“Do.. do you think he’s gonna pass?” Eira asked Sparrow, watching the boy and tracking his movements.
Cyrus was able to move on to the part of the exam he was more comfortable with: the medical part. He was certain he was at least smart for his age. He started by demonstrating how to make a splint. Cyrus did this with utmost care and attention to detail, even if it did take longer than he expected. It was very rigid- almost perfect. He moved on to the next station, where he had to relocate the shoulder of a specially-made dummy. Cyrus was as quick as possible in popping the dummy's shoulder back in. Then, he moved ahead to where a poisoned squirrel was lying on the table, next to a few bottles. He carefully passed by each bottle, trying to decide which was the antidote. He picked up bottle A, which smelled of almonds. "That's poison," Cyrus murmured to himself. The second bottle smelled like herbs, while bottle C was odorless and D smelled of alcohol. He thought for a minute, then settled on bottle B, which turned out to be the correct one. Next, he had to pick a lock. Cyrus wasn't entirely sure he could do it.
Luna shuddered. Initiation? She just got here and now she was going to be initiated? What was she getting initiated on?
Finally, Cyrus was provided a lockpick and told that there was a chest underwater to unlock. He was a strong swimmer, but lockpicking was not his favorite task. Suddenly a lot more anxious, Cyrus had to stop for a moment to steady his breathing. He finally gave up on remaining calm and took a nearly splashless dive into the water. Several feet below the surface was a chest with a lock on it, and he swam down to reach it. Cyrus inserted the lockpick and began fiddling with the lock, but it took longer than expected. His lungs were hurting as he tried to complete the task, but he knew he was close. He finally caught the pick in the lock just right and could feel it turning, up until the lock caught again, nearly snapping his pick in two. Cyrus almost panicked, but with a little more movement, he was able to move the lock the rest of the way, and felt it click open, just as the pick decided to break. Cyrus swung open the chest and grabbed the bag left inside. His lungs ached. He needed to get to the surface right away, so he made sure he had a good grip on the bag, then kicked off the bottom with his feet and emerged from the dark water, panting and gasping. He pulled himself onto the ground outside the water, then stumbled forwards to ring the bell.
"I hope so. He seems like the kind of kid who could use a few friends in a place as scary as this." she turned to face Eira "why are you here?" she asked curious to know the other 8 year olds story
“My parents were killed and the guild took me in,” She sighed, “What about you? She turned to Sparrow.
Cyrus realized he had passed the exam, and sauntered over to where Sparrow and Eira stood talking. He was panting and soaking wet, while they seemed to be in better shape despite having already done the initiation. He felt suddenly insecure.
“Hello! Good job passing the test… I’m Eira.” She smiled at the boy.
"my parents were also killed and i saw people running from where their car was." she wiped her eyes and her brow then looked up to see the boy from the initiation coming towards them "Hello!" she waved
"Oh… thanks," Cyrus replied, trying to smile. Truth was, he felt almost too self-conscious to do so, and was close to breaking down. He took a few deep breaths and reminded himself that they didn't know about his parents and their reputation in the guild, most likely.
“What’s your name and how’d you end up here? I’ve seen you around but never had time to say hello!” She asked.
Cyrus paused for a moment. He could lie. He didn't have to say who his parents were, or be honest about his past, but what good would that do? He was going to be working with these kids for a long time, and could not afford to get off on the wrong foot with them.
"Well, I'm Cyrus Stiles, and I guess you can say I've been here my whole life," he started. Cyrus did not wish to say any more unless pressed farther.
“Oh, okay… I’m Eira Roberts and I’ve been here for four months…” She turned to Sparrow waiting for her to say her name and how long she’d been here. Eira was glad she had met at least two people who could be her friends.
"I don't mean to pry, but did the guild just… take you?" Cyrus asked, "It just seems cruel."
“Hm? Oh, my parents died and the master found me. I don’t know if I have any other family so… I guess he was being kind…” She shrugged.
"That's good to know… I've just heard rumors and such. Of course there are those kindnesses, but other times, I hear of children getting kidnapped. They may just be made up, though." Cyrus felt a little more relaxed upon hearing her story.
(Hah! Luna got kidnapped.)
Eira shuddered, “I don’t believe those rumours…. they’re terrible.”
(Yeah, that's what I thought. I think we have a good mix of characters from different backgrounds, then.)
"They are. Especially for me. I don't want to believe that the people I grew up with are willing to kidnap children." Cyrus sat down and watched for any additional kids who were taking the initiation exam.
"I'm Sparrow Fay, and i came here 2 weeks ago after my parents were killed and the master found me." she replied
