(Uggg my autocorrect is terrible XD sry for all he mistakes in the last one)
The piece of rabbit was gone quicker than she thought and she sighed in happiness when she was finished, happy to have something in her system to keep her going. As far as she knew, no surveillance drones had passed over while they were eating and she didn’t know wether to be worried or happy. Maybe they just forgot to deploy them today, or maybe they were just sent out late.
(it's fine!)
Jay glanced up at the sky when he finished. "No drones…" He muttered, standing. "Not a good sign." He sighed softly, looking around. We're they looking for someone? If so…who? Killswitch operation? Oh God, i hope not. He thought, looking around.
“Maybe they’re just late?” She suggested, already bracing herself against the tree as she got to her feet and grabbed her crutches, “Either way, if they’re late or not, let’s get moving. I don’t want to become alien food if they catch us.” Groaning when she realized she left her pack on the ground, she looked to Jay with a look that silently asked him to help her out again. Her eyes darted around, this late drone thing was making her uneasy, even if they were only a half an hour off.
Jay nodded. He helped her with her bag, eyes still scanning the sky worriedly. "It isn't like them. Those drones are automated. They aren't manned. I mean, there's no one inside them, they're run by computer. Unless they're doing…I don't even know what. There's no reason there shouldn't have been a drone." He started walking once she was ready, keeping his eyes on the skies to look for the drones.
She followed along with him, sighing when he continued to watch the sky, “We’re fine Jay, the drone was probably just shot down by some crazy awesome person. They’ll have it back up tomorrow and we can avoid it then. Right now I’m gonna say let’s take advantage of this and keep moving.” Jay seemed so worried about it and frankly, it made her worry just a little bit more.
He sighed softly. "I know, but…it still worries me." He replied as he walked, eyes still darting up to the sky every now and again. "It's…" He shook his head. Please don't be a Killswitch operation. Please be…please be just something mundane. He thought to himself.
She glanced over at him, wondering why he was so worried. The aliens never told any human their plans obviously, but he seemed to know more than the average person did. Shrugging, she didn’t response, leaving him to his worrying as she pushed on to try to get in as many miles before they had to stop and hide from the military drones.
Jay shook his head slightly, and kept walking with her, though he still kept a wary eye on the sky as they walked. "Is there a specific reason you wanted to go this way?" He asked her, glancing at her. A few strands of pale hair were escaping the hat, and his gold eyes flashed in the sunlight.
“I just really like the west coast, and I figured since I’ve never seen it, now was as good of time as ever to head there.” What she said wasn’t fully true, there was another reason she wanted to head this way, but wanting to see the coast was part of it so she wasn’t exactly lying to him. Her eyes glanced around for any sign of anyone else, good or bad but she didn’t see anyone. It didn’t surprise her though. Not many people were left out here, and the smart ones hid underground where they would be safe.
Jay nodded. "I see." He had been to the West coast, before the aliens. He had only been about five, and…he sighed softly. He had been at the beach, with his family. Playing in the water. He shook his head slightly, pushing the memory away and returning his focus to the road. "I wonder what it's like in Hawaii right now?" He mused. "I mean…it's an island. It would be hard to escape on it."
“That, would honestly suck, being trapped on an island as small as that with nowhere to run? I’d hate it.” She shook her head, “I feel bad for everyone that’s still there.” Delia had to watch where she put her crutches carefully, not wanting one of them to slip and her to go falling once again. Her leg hurt enough already, it didn’t need to get more injured.
Jay nodded. "Yeah, it would." He agreed. "I'm just glad I'm not there." He shook his head slightly. "Or on any island, for that matter. That would be hell." He added, thinking of all the different little islands scattered throughout the oceans.
She nodded as well, thinking of how terrible it would be to not have anywhere to hide from any of the aliens or government drones. How trapped it would feel. She shook her head and sighed, “I’m just glad I’m on one of the continents, there’s a lot more area to hide here and stay alive.”
Jay nodded. "Yeah. I wonder, sometimes, how the other continents are doing, though. Because…" He shook his head. "Communication is so limited." He sighed softly, keeping an eye out for anyone, human or otherwise.
(We need to figure out what the aliens look like XD I'm thinking they look really human, but that's just me, what do you think they should look like?)
(XD I was kinda thinking that too, maybe they’re shapeshifters of some sort? Or if you’ve ever read the book The Host Maybe they're like those ones?)
“I’m sure they’re doing fine, probably doing as well as we are honestly,” She replied. Thinking about the other continents and even just if anyone else was alive wasn’t something she did often. Most of the time she kept to herself, worried just about getting by, everyone else could figure things out for themselves. She continued forward, following the highway which was now turning north gradually, the slight turns barely noticeable if you weren’t paying attention. The sun continued climbing through the sky and the day just got hotter, though it wasn’t unbearably warm yet. Summer was just around the corner though, and then the heat would have to be something she worried about as well as finding more water.
(oooh shapeshifters would be cool! Nope, haven't read that, sorry)
Jay nodded. "Probably…" Unless…but no. Were that the case, I would know. He thought, and shook his head slightly. He kept walking, following the road. "We should leave the road before the Military drone arrives." He said. "If not permanently, at least for the night. It's too wide open, too hard to defend ourselves on." He said, glancing over at her for a moment, then back at the road. "We don't want to be killed in our sleep, or found in our sleep, or anything of the sort."
“Then I guess we’ll go with shapeshifters! (Also imma encourage you to read it, it’s REALLY good))
She nodded, looking to the sky, “We still have a few hours before they pass over, but then we can leave the road for the night. I don’t really fancy going completely off road though, with my leg and such, plus it’s easier to tell which way we’re heading on the road.” Sleeping tonight wasn’t something that would happen for her, at least not more than a few minutes of a nap. It was one of her few tricks she had learned during her travels, never trust anyone you travel with right away.
(alright! (Ok, if I can find it, I'll read it))
Jay nodded. "Of course. But like I said, the road is too open to stay on at night." Admittedly, he didn't sleep much at night anyways. He had insomnia or something of the like, he assumed, as he hardly ever slept very much. Of course, that could also be due to the nightmares that gripped him whenever he did manage to sleep. Either way it happened, he didn't sleep all that much, ever.
“Let’s get as much ground covered as we can before that though.” They definitely weren’t covering as much ground as she usually did and that bothered her, both not being able to move fast enough because of her injury and not being able to get as far away from the gang town as she would like too. As long as they were moving though, she wasn’t going to complain too badly.
"Well duh." Jay replied. "I just wanted to plan ahead, so we aren't desperately trying to figure out what to do when sunset comes." He said with a small smile. "Also, if we spot a pond or stream, I, for one, am going to wash off." He added. He hadn't washed off completely in…a month? He wasn't sure. He had kept himself as clean as possible, by washing off his hands, face, and armpits at every opportunity. Therefore, he didn't smell as bad as he could have. He still wanted to bathe, though.
She smiled barely as well, though it was a smile nonetheless, “Just let me fill up my water bottles before you dunk your dirty self into the stream.” Delia planned to wash, but she didn’t want to get her bandages wet, so simply rinsing her hair and everything but her leg would have to work. Rivers and ponds weren’t terribly common when she traveled, but if she did find one she usually camped out next to it for a few days. There was always game coming to the water, meaning free food, the water was usually clean enough to wash herself in, and purifying it meant she was good to drink as much water as she wanted for as long as she stayed there.
He nodded. "Alright. And no peeking, either." He said, slightly teasingly. He sighed softly, shaking his head. Streams, rivers, lakes, any body of water worked to wash off in. Problem was, they weren't usually by a large roadway like this. Especially not here. Up north, in the remains of Canada and Alaska, more roads were beside bodies of water. But not down here, in what remained of the lower 48 states of the US.
“I wouldn’t,” She replied, a tiny smile again flashing across her face before disappearing. Water was one of the hardest things to find when she traveled. Without a map that showed where the lakes and other water was, she just had to rely on luck and her gut instinct.
He chuckled softly, the ghost of a smile flickering across his face. "Alright." He replied. He kept walking, eyes roaming around to keep an eye out for aliens or people. Anything, really.
Being on crutches and walking for that long straight her arms were starting to hurt but she didn’t say anything, gritting her teeth and keeping her problems to herself. They covered quite a lot more ground before the sun even started to set. When it did start to go down though she glanced at Jay, silently warning him as to how much time they had left.
