“So are you saying we ask one of them then?” Alexander asked, studying the Hare.
“If you would like,” the March Hare replied unhelpfully, taking another drink of tea. Alexander sighed.
“Can you give us advice or something?” Alexander inquired, resting his chin in his hand.
“What do you want know?”
“What do we need to know about the Jabberwocky?“ Locke asked, as he took a sip of his tea.
“Well, you can only kill it with the Vorpal Sword,” the March Hare responded. “And before you ask where that is, I have no idea. But I’m sure the five of you will be able to find it. Also, like I said earlier, you have to know where it’s been in order to guess it’s attack pattern. Anything else?”
"Yeah, one thing. Where can I find some nice booze huh?" He says tipping his chair back and looking at his glass of tea suspiciously raising a brow.
Maddie gave Chess a slight glare for bringing up that drink and chucked a small cookie at his head. ”Can’t you be a little serious about the situation?” she scolded, trying to ignore the headache that was starting. ”Ignore that question, Marchie. We don't need any of that.”
"Wh-OW! hey! It is a serious question! I do need some of that!" Chess says stuffing the cookie in his mouth and leaning back in his chair again, that he had almost fallen out of thanks to Maddie's cookie chucking skills.
The March Hare smirked. "I've heard the King of Hearts has quite the stash," he said conspiratorially. "But you'd have to get into the castle, where the Queen of Hearts is, more often than not.
"We don't need booze," Alexander added, trying to come up with some sort of plan. "What we need is a way to find the Vorpal Sword…"
"I'm sure the sisters who live in the Treacle Well can tell you that, but their advice always comes with a price," the Hare warned.
"Well that's it! The decision is made! We must go to that king and get his booze!" Chess says standing up
Maddie looked at her cup thoughtfully as she rubbed at her temple. ”I think there was a poem, or something, about the Jabberwocky… The Treacle sisters… I might have heard about them but I- OW!!!!” she exclaimed holding her head, her eyes clenched shut.
“No, we are not doing that,” Alexander argued, annoyed. “What is it with you and booze anyway?” He glanced at Maddie. “Are you okay, Maddie? What is it?”
Maddie focused on taking slow deep and even breaths as the pain slowly receded. Her hands were still shaking as she grabbed a full cup of tea and swallowed it in one gulp. She slowly opened her eyes and ignored Alexander’s worried question. ”We’ll have to go to the castle. We can still go to the Duchess but we have to go to the castle.” she explained with uneven gasps. ”But first, there's something March has to teach you boys.”
“What?” Alexander asked, glancing at the March Hare. “Seriously, Maddie, are you okay?”
“She’s fine, it’s just her ability,” the Hare waved it off with little concern. “As for teaching you something, I’m guessing she meant how to change form?”
“I would love to learn how to shift.“ Locke said as he stood up as well as setting his cup down. “I'm not too sure how the queen would react if she saw us in out human forms, especially if they are not in human forms in the book.“ He explained.
”She’ll kill you.” Maddie said blandly as she nursed another cup of tea. ”Or try to at least.” she sighed. ”I’m probably going to have to stay quiet or something… I didn't notice her reaction to the Mad Hatter as a girl.” she ended with a soft giggle.
"Wait, wait wait. Abilities? Like what?!" Chess asks like an excited little boy.
The March Hare smirked. “Well, you each have different abilities. You, you, and you”—here he pointed to Locke, Chess, and Alexander—“each have the ability to shift form. Since your characters, like me, are typically seen in their animal form, the Queen would kill you if you were seen as humans. So, you change form. The seer has visions of the future and can see what might happen if you all make a specific choice. The vanisher can disappear and reappear as well as teleport short distances. The adventurer can always find the right path, as well as help you find the Jabberwocky. They’re linked. The genius is extra smart, and knows the names of the things in Wonderland as well, like a walking dictionary, I suppose. That’ll help you not get killed for sure. The trumpeter can run fast and send out sound blasts to hurt or stun your enemies.”
“Whoa. That’s a lot,” Alexander gasped. “So I guess our name in the letter corresponds to our powers then. How do we change form?”
“Well the first step is to visualize your animal form,” the Hare replied.
Locke thought about what his form would look like. A small blue fuzzy caterpillar came to his mind. "Got it." He said as he thought about it. He could almost already feel his connection to that form.
“Now is the tricky part. You have to make your current form malleable enough to change. Imagine your insides turning to jello and re-forming. It is difficult the first few times and may take you several minutes.”
Alexander squeezed his eyes shut and did as the March Hare instructed.
Chess leaned back in his chair and tipped his head back as he looked up to the sky.
He closed his eyes and imagined a cat. An interesting looking cat at that. A cheshire grin and all sorts of colors. He looked back at the hare.
"Jello!?"
Locke felt himself become slightly wobbly and loose. "I think I'm doing it." He whispered, not wanting to lose concentration. "Now what?
The March Hare ignored Chess’s explanation. “You imagine yourself becoming the animal. And then it should work.” He shrugged.
Alexander was doing his best to do what the Hare had said, feeling himself begin to change.
Locke felt himself changing. If he could try to explain it he would say it felt like melting and evaporating at the same time. He opened his eyes when he felt himself stop moving. He looked around. Everything was so much bigger than he was.
chess look at the….caterpillar? "Woah dude! I gotta say it though. You looked 100% hotter when you were a human" he says with a smile.
