Darcy brushed their hair away from their forehead as they got out of their car closed the door. They walked up the walkway to Lola's house. The morning air was cold and Darcy wrapped their jacket tighter around them. It had officially been a year since they head their license, which meant it was officially the first day they would drive Lola to school. They rang the doorbell and waited.
Lola jumped when she heard her doorbell ring, quickly grabbing her bag and making her way to the door. Before she went outside, she smoothed down her hair and straightened her jacket without thinking, wanting to make herself look as well put together as possible. She opened a door and flashed a smile at her friend, Darcy.
“You ready to go?” Darcy asked, returning Lola’s smile, and holding up their keys.
She nodded and stepped out, closing the door behind her. "Congrats on getting your license, by the way."
"Thanks," they said, walking to their car. "And now I can drive my friends places." They opened the door for Lola with a flourish.
"Yes, and I can't thank you enough for that. I hated taking the bus." Lola smiled and slid into the passenger seat.
"It's no problem." Darcy smiled and closed her door, then walked around the car and slid in their own seat. They passed Lola an aux cord. "Pick the music?"
"Most of my music consists of depression and heartbreak, are you sure you want to listen to that?" Lola said with a sad laugh.
Darcy smiled as they started the car. "Well my music consists of musicals and you definitely don't wanna listen to that," they said, raising their eyebrows.
"I don't mind musicals," Lola protested. "In fact, I kind of like them, they're… interesting."
Darcy raised their eyebrows at Lola. "You wanna listen to musicals?" they asked skeptically.
"Well, sure. I really don't mind them," she said, picking at her nails as she spoke. "It's your car, anyway, you play whatever you like."
"It's my car but no one likes my music." They pulled out their phone and started looking through their music library, trying to find something not-bad.
"At least your music is actually happy. Most of the time, anyway," Lola sad with a chuckle.
"You'd be surprised," Darcy said, looking up from their phone. "You know, I don't mind depressing music. Just play something."
"You sure?" Lola asked, opening her phone to look through her playlists. "Maybe we can switch off or something."
Darcy smiled. "It's not that long of a drive." They started to pull on to the road. "But maybe we can listen to my music on the way home."
"Sounds fair," she said, finally choosing a song and putting her phone down.
Darcy smiled. They listened to the music and drove. As they got closer to school they asked, "I forget, are you going to the dance on Friday?"
Lola went slightly red, and started picking at her nails again. "I wasn't really planning on it. I don't really have anyone to go with." Are they asking me to the dance? They thought, blushing a bit harder.
"We could go together," Darcy said smiling. "If you want." They pulled into the school parking lot. "As friends of course."
Lola's smile faltered, but only slightly. Of course she wasn't asking you to the dance. Don't think stupid things like that. "Of course, that would be awesome. I'm not sure what I would wear, though."
"Oh!" Darcy exclaimed, smiling. "We could go shopping together. If you want. I'll just wear my suit, but maybe I could get a tie to match whatever you wear," they said, smiling.
"That sounds cool… do you know what the theme is? Maybe I can pick my dress accordingly," she suggested.
"I have no idea," Darcy said, turning off the car and getting out. "I didn't even know there was one."
"There's usually a theme. Which dance is it again?" She asked, opening her door and stepping out. She checked the time on her phone. 8 minutes until class started.
"Winter formal I think?" they said, shouldering their backpack. They walked over next to Lola. "But you might wanna fact check me on that. I'm like 53% sure that's what it is."
Lola laughed. "Maybe there'll be a flyer around here somewhere."
"Hopefully," Darcy said seriously, coming over to walk next to Lola. "Cause I sure don't." They flashed her a grin.
