Lola sighed. She was on her way to the last class of the day- physics. When she walked in, she saw a few people in the room, and a sub frantically shuffling through papers at the teacher's desk. She groaned and took a seat next to Darcy. "This is going to be boring as hell," she complained, quiet enough so the sub couldn't hear.
"No, no." Darcy leaned back in their chair and put their feet up on the desk. They grabbed a pen from behind their ear and pointed it at the sub. "Look at that sub. They don't know anything about physics except that one class they took in high school. We're not gonna do shit in this class, it'll be great." They grinned at Lola.
"True, but what if the sub is strict and makes us do physics work from some bullshit they printed out online?" Lola suggested, still a bit suspicious.
"Like Ms. Rivera is actually gonna check if we did it," Darcy said, turning their head to look at Lola. "And besides, that sub has no backbone, I can tell."
Lola glanced at the frantic substitute once again. "You have a point," she said, chuckling a bit. "So what do we do while we wait for class to be over?"
"Just hang out, I guess," Darcy said, fiddling with the pen in their hands. They looked up at Lola. "Here, give me your hand."
Lola felt her face heat up a bit, but offered her hand without hesitating. "What are you gonna do?"
Instead of answering, Darcy uncapped the pen with their teeth and started drawing on the back of Lola's hand. The drawing sort of looked like a short, upsidedown broom. The base had a half circle around it and the "bristles" had dots around them.
"What is that?" She asked, confused and trying really hard to keep her hand still, but her fingers twitched a bit.
“Does it matter?” Darcy asked, still drawing.
"A little. I'm curious," she said, frowning as she tried to figure out what it was.
“I’m finding out,” Darcy said. They wrote ’ars longa vita brevis’ on Lola’s hand, the litters circling the drawing. “Or, in this case ars brevis vita longa I suppose.”
"What does that mean?" She asked, admiring the pen art on her hand.
“Art is long, life is short,” Darcy said nodding towards Lola’s hand. “Or art is short, life is long, because I did that in pen.”
Lola laughed and took back her hand, looking over for the art for a second. "Interesting… what did you draw?"
Darcy shrugged and capped their pen. They ran their hand though their hair and smiled at Lola. “You tell me.”
"I… don't have any idea. I'm not very artistic," she said with a shrug. "Is it supposed to be something?"
"Could be. Why does it matter?" Darcy gave off an impression that the drawing either had a deep, profound meaning behind it, or they had absolutely no idea and had drawn something completely random.
"I guess it doesn't… I was just curious." Lola shrugged and let her hand drop back on the table. "Like I said, I'm not very artistic."
Silently, Darcy uncapped the pen and offered it to Lola, holding the cap between their teeth. They held out their hand towards Lola as well, raining their eyebrows at her in a silent question, waiting to see if she would do it.
Lola reached out for the pen, then froze, hesitating. "I'm horrible at drawing…"
"Just try it," Darcy said, their voice muffled from the pen between their teeth. "I don't care how good it is."
