So I actually just got done with this book series (Throne of Glass), and the main character spent a good amount of time in a labor camp. She would frequently get whipped, and the deepest lashes would mostly get infected, and she would have died if not by the grace of some healers. However, later in the series, (I'm talking like 2-3 years), the deepest lashed left highly noticeable scars, and the main character would wince every time someone touched them. Hope I helped! (And I highly recommend the series)

Early teens? VERY. Midteens? Still pretty shocking. Late teens? Yep, still shocking I guess. I mean, people have big parties to celebrate being pregnant no matter how old they are. Also, if it's a very young person, the shock may also be big because of the possibility of sexual assault.
