Alright, I have to head home and register for classes for my fall semester. Did you want to write a starter or should I?
Well I'm about ready to drive homeā¦ So- if I make a starter it won't be till later.
(Welp Iām done first so Iāll write a quick starter in a sec)
Quint groaned as he shuffled through papers at his cubicle at the pop up home defense base that he had been stationed at for the past year. He rubbed at his eyes, feeling like he was in sleep debt. He stood up, needing to stretch his legs. Heād come back to the documents regarding deployments and his enlisted that he watched over. He stepped out of the office and started heading for the mess hall, thinking about a hot cup of coffee even though it was 20:00 oāclock. He glanced around, noting most of the soldiers had already grabbed their food and headed back to the bunks.
(Oh, okay I'm sorry, I had to run some errands.)
(Nah youāre good! I just figured since I had time first, itād be easier for you to have something to go off of whenever youāre free :3)
(Okie dokie, thank you I'll reply when I get the chance!)
Nicklaus had been late to grab his food he'd been held back to do some work. He was in the mess hall were he had just grabbed his food and thanked the people behind the counter. He was indeed very masculine but he seemed out of place there, he was a pretty boy no denying that, he was younger and over all just very cute, minimal scaring on his face. He decided he was going to just eat in the mess hall before heading to the barracks for the night. He sat down with his 'meal' and ate it sparingly, it actually wasn't that bad, he definitely missed his mother's cooking but nothing could change that. There were a few people still in the mess hall most of them sitting and talking at the other tables, nick had chosen an empty table, he didn't feel like socializing at the moment and he was just ready to go to sleep.
(Ak this is so short I'm sorry- )
Youāre good! As long as itās substantial enough to go off of, Iām not picky:)
Quint picked up his coffee, thanking the mess attendants with his brusque politeness that they had certainly gotten used to by now, knowing after a year that he meant every word he said, he just had a hard time of showing it in a socially acceptable way. As he turned on his heel to start out of the mess hall again, he spotted Nickhlaus, his newest enlisted under him. He still did not know much about the other, but it concerned him that this man appeared to be alone without a comrade. It was standard practice during wartimes for soldiers to have a buddy. It was not necessary per say but it was more common than wandering by yourself. The Lieutenant walked over and asked in his ford commercial worthy voice, āSoldier. What are you doing in the mess alone? Has the rest of the squadron left you behind, or is this of your own volition?ā He unfortunately didnāt really think about the fact that as a superior of Nickhlaus, standing next to him like he was would possibly be seen as intimidating.
Nicklaus cleared his throat before turning and looking up and his superior "I- uh.. Sir, I was finishing up outside, I suppose that I was left behindā but I still had work to do.. Which is why I'm eating now-" he didn't speak quietly or very loud either just enough to be heard by the lieutenant, he heated that was a stuttering mess but he had just been called out on something that he was apparently doing wrong and it made him nervous. "I can finish up in my barracks if that's what you're getting at Sir. " he looked up at Quint as if he was being scolded for doing something bad, he took his hat off and scrunched it in his hands waiting on his superior to say something, he hadn't even been her that long at he was already having a horrible first encounter with his boss.
Quint suddenly looked confused. āNo, soldier, I was seeking to ensure that you are not being mistreated by the rest of the squad. Itās also dangerous for people to walk around alone nowadays. Especially those that look like you. Do you care if I sit with you to drink my coffee? Iāll escort you to your barracks once youāve finished eating before I return to my work. Iād rather not have any of my enlisted under me by themselves any more often than necessary.ā Quint realized how close he was standing and saw the other getting nervous. He felt a pang of guilt and quickly took one pace backwards, realizing he was possibly invading personal space. āIāll have a discussion with the whole squadron about not leaving each other alone, tomorrow.ā
Nick nodded and moved over a bit so Quint could sit down with him. "I'm not being mistreated.. I just had work to do sir," he cleared his throat and took a drink of water "really tho I'm okay you don't have to walk me to the barracksā¦ I'll be fine on my own. " he smiled a little before continuing to eat his food "and you don't have to go to any trouble over me I mean we are on base I can walk around on my own.. I'm a grown man. " he said with a little chuckle to himself.
(Okie this is my last reply for the day which is why it it pitifully small š going to hopefully get some sleep tonight lol)
Quint sat down and sipped at his coffee next to the other. āSoldier, the world isnāt what we knew it was anymore. Being on base for us is still dangerous. I would feel better if I escorted you.ā He studied Nickhlaus for a moment and commented, āItās probably more dangerous for you than for me to walk around alone since you have a pretty face. Whereas Iām rather conventionally unattractive.ā He then turned back to his coffee and sipped like he had said nothing wrong.
(Youāre okay, I had already gone to bed š)
(Okay, cool beans. š¤£ I'll reply soon)
Nikolaus raised a brow and looked at Quint with a stunned smirk "I- Lieutenant. " a small chuckle escaped him before he turned his attention back to his drink and shook his head "alright, sir, fine I'll let you escort me to my barracks.. " he couldn't help but laugh to himself as he finished up the food on his tray, he began to stand up so he could bring it up to the counter and sat it down along with his cup and walked back over to the Lieutenant "I'll let you finish your coffee first, sir. "
Quint looked a tad confused as he watched the other soldier laugh as he put away his trash. āWhat are you laughing about?ā His tone appearing to be very genuine about his question. He then swigged half his coffee down as he awaited an answer.
(Boop)
(Ak! Sorry I took an un intentional break š)
Nick shook his head before clearing his throat "oh nothing, sir. " he said with another small chuckle as he made his way over to the Lieutenant, "are you ready to head to the barracks or are you still working on your coffee?" He asked crossing his arms feeling a bit more tired than he had originally felt.
(Nah youāre good! Just bumped it in case you lost it :3)
Quint still looked a tad confused but then swigged the last of his coffee and crumpled the cup in his hands. He stood up and gestured for Nick to follow him, tossing the cup he crumpled like a piece of paper intk a nearby trashcan. āNo, I am now fully caffeinated. Come, letās get you to the barracks and into bed. Donāt want you falling asleep in your post tomorrow.ā And led the way out. Once they were outside and walking towards the barracks in the growing dark, the Lieutenant asked curiously, āAre you an introvert by chance?ā
(Scree :3)
(I'm so sorry! I think I dreamed I replied š)
(Lolllllllll that is such a mood honestly)
Nick laughed a bit "alright, that sounds mighty fine to me, Lieutenant. " he said with a smile before stretching, he looked around once they got outside satisfied with his view and smiled to himself "ah- me and introvert? Um.. I would say I kinda am but not entirely? Why do you ask sir?"
āIāve noticed you do not often stay in the vicinity of others voluntarily. And in group trainings you tend to stay on the outskirts or against walls and donāt talk to others very much?? Or am I just catching you at the wrong times?ā The Lieutenant tilted his head gazing at Nick with a mix of concern and curiosity. āI just want to make sure that everyone is doing well. I understand that being torn from your homes can be incredibly stressful and disturbing, especially for war, even if weāre lucky enough to stay in our homelands.ā
Nick rolled his eyes at the mention of the other people there with him, "well. . I wouldn't say that I'm introverted, the people here are just very irritating. And yes I know I'm not in high school anymore and that I chose to do this by enlisting myself, I just expected the men here to be a little.. I don't know responsible?" He sighed and shook his head "I respect them.. But not as much as I should, everyone is hard on me but I always prevail, that's how I was in high school as well. But these guys don't care if I'm good at what I do, because I'm the little guy, I'm not seeing as their equal and that's fine, because if their equal is some dumb brute than I don't want to be like them. And before you ask no I don't want you to do anything about it I'm not going to be the guy that ran to the lieutenant for help, I'm going to deal with it how I always do," he now regretted ranting but he couldn't take it back now, his face was a slight shade of red but it was barely noticeable unless you looked closely.
Quintās eyes went wide. āWait, you enlisted? Like, voluntarily?ā He turned his eyes to the ground, brow furrowed. āNo wonder you donāt get along with the restā¦ā He turned almost haunted eyes to the other man, halting his footsteps. āNicklaus, the rest of these men are all drafted. They didnāt get a choice in coming here. They consider themselves practically enslaved, they were torn from their homes and families without choice. Shit, no wonder you guys donāt get along. ..um, pardon my french-ā He sighed and told Nick straight, āI think you may be one of the few who voluntarily did this if I understood you correctly. I wasnāt even a volunteer. I was drafted, but I got my position because I decided to make the best of it by working hard and was in the middle of finishing my college degree.ā
Nick nodded his head and net the lieutenants gaze "yes I enlisted myself into the army I wanted to join ever since I was a child.. And I knew we would have a draft so I thought I would just save them the trouble of sending me a draft notice. " he spoke simply he understood why they didn't want to be there but they had to be, they wouldn't be there if it wasn't important. He chuckled a bit at quints Statment, "military life isn't for everyone but for those of us that chose to be here, you'd think he would get a sliver of respect from anyone. " but you still stayed her thought right I mean it that an impact on your life to the point that you didn't leave when you were able. "
