So, one, you should definitely read it. It’s a children's story, but any good children’s story is good enough for anyone.
It’s a fairytale style story heavily inspired at times by Chinese myth.

At the base of the Fruitless Mountain, in the poor village at the base, covered in the color of mud, in a small hut, lives Minli. She is not colored by mud like the rest of her world. This is because of her Ba, who tells her stories. Her Ma claims they are rubbish, but still Minli listens, and still Ba tells.
One of the most important stories is the story of how Jade Dragon became angry at mortals who despised her rain, and withheld it from them, leading her children, Pearl Yellow, Long, and Black, to sacrifice themselves in order to create the rivers for humans. In her sadness, Jade Dragon repented, and changed herself into Fruitless Mountain, never to bloom unless reunited with at least one of her children.
One day, a merchant comes to town carrying goldfish, promising that they will bring gold and jade to whoever brings them into their home. Minli buys one, using half the money she was given at birth, a single copper coin, and takes it home.
When her Ma returns she is woeful, and Ba is troubled, though he maintains that Minli did no wrong. Minli watches as he trembles as he gives the last of his rice to feed the fish.
Minli realizes that they will always remain poor, unable to even care for a goldfish and resolves to change their fortune. Before her parents can return from work the next day, Minli leaves, going to find the omniscient Man in the Moon, the one wise enough to change destiny, who will be sure to know the way to bring fortune to her village.

It would work well as a an animated movie I suppose. But I would prefer it be live action, but put all the stories (of which they are many) in the artistic stop motion in the style of the illustrations in the book.
