(Are we ready to start?)
Yep! Give me a few and I'll have it up
The sound of running feet came up the stairs, making Evie cover her ears. Evie knew what was happening, and she didn't want it. The match device. Something everyone gets anytime and any age. Her brother was already married, and her sister is obsessed with the match device. The door to her room slammed with such force it hit her wall. Evie got her bubbly personality from her mom mostly, but her tomboy side that was daring and liked to break the rules sometimes, came from her grandfather on her father's side. "Darling, your match came in!" The excitement on her mother's face filled her with even more hated, not because it's her mom, but because this whole thing was stupid. She loved her mom, so Evie decided to act as happy as she possibly could. "That's wonderful," a sarcastic tone rolled out. So much for acting happy. "Honey, are you not happy?" As her mother said that, Evie put on a smile and snatched the device from her father's hand. "What.. of course I am." Saying that made her want to throw up. Shooing them out the door, she saw her sister run up with a huge smile. "Let me-" and before she could finish her sentence, Evie slammed the door and locked it. Moving to her bed she set the device on her night stand and stare for a few seconds. Though she didn't like this stuff, she was still curious on who she would be matched with. The red glowing button taunted her, as if it knew she wanted to look. A few more seconds and finally she pushed it. A female with black hair appeared on the screen. "Everest Valentine. We are happy to announce your partner!" Well that was short. Evie thought for sure they would do a long speech. A boys face appeared on the screen, followed by his name. Augustus Gray Beckett. It only showed his name and age. "Whatever.." Pushing the red button, she figured it would just turn it off. "Everest Valentine, we are happy to announce your partner!" Again? Why won't it shut off? The screen fizzled out for a moment before showing a different boy on the screen. Caspian Winterthorne. "What's going on?"
Elsewhere, Gus was locked in his own room, lounging back in a swivel chair behind his computer desk, staring numbly at the stucco designs on his bedroom ceiling. He didn't prefer hiding out in his room all the time, but that closed door was often the only thing that separated him from the verbal onslaught of insults that spewed from his father's mouth. And besides— he could hardly stand to look at his sick mother anymore. His bedroom seemed to be the safest place for him, these days.
Ah, but even the safest of places were often compromised, Gus realized as someone knocked against his door a little too loudly. He'd recognize the weight of that fist anywhere; it was his dad.
Gus dragged himself up from his seat and hurried over to the door— where the visitor on the other side was still pounding away like his life depended on it. Gus cracked it open to see his assumption confirmed; Mr. Beckett, a tall man with broad shoulders and an ever-present scowl, looked down at his son— both literally and probably figuratively as well.
"Your mom said I should give this to you," the bigger man said dully. "Your match came in or something." He tossed the little device into Gus's hands. "I was startin' to think you'd never get one. Maybe it's just glitching out, though."
Gus didn't respond, but rather waited for Mr. Beckett to leave before closing the door and turning the little device over in his hands. His mouth went dry, and he swallowed hard as he took it back over to his desk and set it down. This… this was a life changing moment. His match. He was almost afraid to press the button, to see who they'd matched him with— not because he would be disappointed, but because there was a good chance he would disappoint them. He'd thought about this a thousand times before. Some said the matches were supposed to be perfect or whatever, but… he couldn't shake the feeling of impending doom, like whoever he ended up with would be miserable for the rest of their life because he wasn't what they had hoped for.
He bit down on his lip and pressed down on the flashing button, holding his breath whilst he waited for the results.
"Augustus Gray Beckett. We are happy to announce your partner!"
An image of a girl with dark hair flashed for him to see. Everest Valentine.
Gus smiled faintly. She was pretty. Though, that didn't give him even an inkling about her personality, that was still a good start. At the same time, it only made him more worried, because she was attractive and— well, frankly, he considered himself to be less-than-physically-appealing.
(Ugh, I'm so jealous of your writing. You're so good!)
Caspian was avoiding going home. It was coming in today, and he really, really didn’t want to see the results. It wasn’t that he didn’t want a match, it was just that… yeah, he really didn’t. The supreme asshole. That was what he was. But he couldn’t care less. It was a coping mechanism. Also, he naturally was one.
He sat on a bench in the park, fiddling with his watch, frowning. He wasn’t in the mood to listen to music, which was sad indeed. Music was his life, but right now he was in such a bad mood that he couldn’t.
Finally, he forced himself to stand. He made a face. Better to get this over with. He walked home, head bowed, hands deep in his pockets. The wind blew against him, and his white hair blew into his face. He scowled in annoyance.
When he got home, his parents were both home, sitting on the couch, in mirror positions, arms and legs crossed, stern looks on their faces. It was rare for them to be home at the same time, let alone looking like they had the same ideas. They were the perfect example of polar examples, and although it caused a lot of fights in the house, the two of them loved each other a lot.
And Cas thought it was gross.
“Your match is here,” his dad said. “Why don’t you check it out?”
“After all, our match was a good choice,” his mom said. “Maybe it will be the same way for you.”
Caspian snorted. “Yeah, and you got a messed-up son.” He held out his hand. “Give it here. I’ll check it later.” His mom tossed it to him, after a worried glance at her husband, and he stuffed the box in his pocket, storming to his room and slamming the door. He flopped onto his bed and pulled the small box from his pocket, staring at it.
Finally, he pressed the flashing button, and the results flashed into being. Everest Valentine, it said. A pretty girl with brown hair showed up on the screen. Cas propped himself up on an elbow and studied her, then snorted. Sure, she was hot, but what did that say about her personality? Girls like that were usually stuck-up bi- brats.
(Ugh, I'm so jealous of your writing. You're so good!)
(^^^I agree.)
((Wait, legit? I feel like my writing is trash 93% of the time, so… that means a lot! Thank you! Your writing is stellar, too! <3))
(Well, my writing is trash 100% of the time, sooooo… You guys are both super good!)
(Stop lying. Your writing is good, and I'd tell you otherwise if I thought it was bad. XD)
(…Would you, though? XD)

(No way! You guys are more detailed and I can clearly see what your characters are doing and and feeling. I have a long way to go, haha.)
(…Would you, though? XD)
(Listen you'd know it if I didn't like your writing cuz the other day this person was like super wack in their writing and I may or may not have told them this. I mean I was nice about it but I essentially told them I wouldn't be RPing with them atm because of it so uh if I don't like your writing, you'll know)
(BUT I like both of your guys' writing so it's all good :D)

I think I know who you're talking about. If I'm correct, I've done the same to them…
I love both of yours, too! You guys are amazing at writing!
A strange feeling arose inside her, though she didn't know what it was, all she knew is that it felt like she should hide the box. Her body took action before she could think things through. Where, where can I hide it? In a panic she ran to her window. Sitting there was a little purple flower in a pot. Her grandmother which passed two years ago have it to her. "Sorry grandma." She carefully took the flower out and put the box at the bottom. Who would tear a girls flowers. It was the perfect place. Gently, with a smile she put the floor back. A tapping came from the other side of her door which made her jump. "Darling?" The sweet voice of her mother was heard. Shit. The pants she wore were a dark color, so maybe her mom wouldn't notice if she wiped the dirt on them. "Can I come in?" Now she was sounding concerned. "Actually I was just about to come down, so.. uh.. give me a moment." Without saying anything the sound of foot steps slowly disappeared. This was already exhausting. Evie said a few minutes, so she laid down taking time to think.
After thinking it through, Evie slowly sat up and headed down stairs. At the bottom of the stairs stood her sister, her arms crossed and a little glare. "So.." Evie paused, "Unfair! You don't even want a match, I should've got mine first." Evie, grinned and walked down. "You're right. Do you want mine?" Then Evie pushed her aside. "I'm going to the library!" Before her parents could grill her, she swung her bag around her shoulder and quickly bolted for the door. The library would have something about two matches… right?

(Good! It is my goal in life to pester people until they go insane, and also to make people feel better about themselves, because I can't do that for myself XD)
Gus finally managed to pry his eyes off of the device that had set his fate and glanced at his bedroom door. Securely closed, just as it should be. But his parents would come up to see him soon if he didn't tell them about his results— or, more specifically, his mom would want to know, and she'd send Dad up because she was too weak to be walking up flights of stairs. So he snatched it up into his hands and crept over to the door, the cheap-carpeted floor creaking beneath him.
He ventured downstairs to find his parents both in the living room— his mother lying on the couch (she preferred this to lying in bed all day, as it made her feel less "confined," she said), looking as pale and sickly as ever, and his dad in the easy chair, idly watching the news.
"Gussy," his mother managed, using the nickname only she was allowed to use because he hated it otherwise. "You got the results? What were they?"
"Um— well, they're good, I think." How could he tell? The girl— Everest— was attractive, but that was all he knew, and that wasn't enough for him to answer for sure. Nonetheless, he couldn't say they were bad, because he had absolutely no evidence to support that claim, either. So he placed the little device on the table and pressed the button, as to show his parents the results.
"She's pretty, Gus!" his mother beamed.
"Hm. Yeah," his dad chimed in blankly. "But there's gotta be something wrong with her."
Gus frowned. "There's nothing wrong with her–"
"That chic is way outta your league, Gus." His dad glanced at the machine before looking back the television. "There's gotta be something a bit off about her for them to pair her with you." He snorted. "Maybe she's blind."
"Jason, don't," Gus's mother chided, but Gus had already picked up the device and was heading back up the stairs.
"What? I'm teasing him–"
If they said more, Gus didn't hang around to listen. He showed them the results, and that was the only thing he was obligated to do.
"Nothing, absolutely nothing." Evie laid her head on the table. Hours of searching and she had found no evidence of anyone having two soul mates. It was weird, did the device just mess up? If it did, than who was her actual partner. "Ugh, why am I thinking about this so hard." She sighed and watched as others sat and read. "Not like I wanted one to begin with." It would be around this time she would visit her grandpa, that was if he hadn't passed away. She thought it was strange that the government had an age limit on when people die. Sure eighty wasn't a bad age, but her grandpa was still healthy, why kill…. that word, the government were murderers, no one else seemed to see it though. "Whatever." Grabbing her bag she decided to head out again. Not wanting to go home, Evie stopped by a park that she would often go to when she wanted to be alone. She loved the swings, it gave her a light taste of what flying would feel like. She laid her bag on the ground and sat on the swing. Sure.. maybe people thought she was a little old for this, but Evie never cared what people thought. "I'll have to find a different way to search." Evie was determined.. there had to be something.
((Alright, so how are they all going to eventually come into contact with each other?))
(Well I was think at the park)
((Good idea.))
Gus slinked back to his room and unceremoniously dropped the device onto his cluttered desk, letting out a long sigh and rubbing his face. Why did life have to be so aggravating and difficult? It was probably his fault somehow, he reasoned. He was overreacting.
Whatever the cause of his stress, whether it be himself, that device, or anything else, he needed an outlet to relieve himself. Gus glanced towards his bedroom window, noting that that weather was preferable. Getting out of the house and away from his family— one member of it, in particular— didn't seem like such a bad idea, so maybe he'd go out for a brisk walk. That generally helped ease his stress.
He slipped on a pair of converse shoes and made his way back downstairs, though he avoided the living room and his parents. "I'm going for a walk," he called to them, and, without waiting for a reply, he slipped out the front door.
It was a nice day, and the fresh air was enough to lift anyone's spirits at least a little. Maybe he'd go down by the park, just for a bit. That is, if it weren't too crowded.
Gus ambled along until he reached the park, his destination, though he spotted something— or, more accurately, someone— out of the corner of his eye that made him stop in his tracks.
The girl on the swing.
He'd seen her before.
It was Everest.
As she swung, Evie only thought about her brother and how he was doing. He moved, and Evie missed him. He married a nice women, but Evie remembered her brother being in love with someone else, he was devastated when she wasn't the one. Was love something people choose for you? Is love really that simple? Everest just couldn't wrap her head around it. Planting her feet on the ground, she stopped swinging. Not many people we're out today, and she liked it. The sound of nature, the birds, the lake, the breeze, or was all just so… wonderful. Her eyes scanned the scenery, but stopped when she spotted someone familiar. Augustus? It felt strange to see him in person, though it was only natural she would meet him at some point. He was handsome. It took her a few seconds to process what was going on. As soon as she composed herself, Evie smiled and stood up. I might as well greet him.
Gus's heart leapt into his throat when his eyes met hers, and he momentarily froze in place, like a deer caught in headlights. He wasn't ready to talk to her yet. No, no, no. He hadn't mustered up the courage, hadn't had time to think through all of the possible ways that a conversation with her could go. He hadn't mentally and emotionally readied himself for possible rejection. He wasn't sure if anyone who had been matched as soulmates had ever rejected the other, but if not, he guaranteed he'd be the first to get dumped. Or at least, he had the potential to be the first.
He wanted to run, but he had two good reasons why he couldn't. The first reason was that he was glued to his spot and couldn't bring himself to move. The second was that she undoubtedly recognized him, because if she was his match, he had to be hers, and therefore she knew exactly who he was. And she was looking right at him, so if he tried to leave now he'd look like a jerk. Or maybe a weirdo. Probably both. And he didn't want to make a horrible first impression. He was already blowing it as it was, and it surely didn't help that he was thoroughly unprepared and didn't even have time to get ready or dress nicer or– or anything.
What was he supposed to say, anyway? Hey I'm Gus, and you're my soulmate, so we should hang out sometime would be laying it on a little thick, but ignoring the fact that they had matched would also be awkward. Ah— curse fate and the lack of time given to him to think this conversation through!
Several seconds had passed before Gus realized that he hadn't said a word yet, but was rather just standing there like a flippin' moron. His face flushed and he desperately tried to think of something to say— anything that wasn't stupid— but the only thing he came up with was, "Hi."
Evie laughed at his awkwardness. It was weird seeing a picture this morning and a few hours later he was standing in front of her. "Hi." She looked around not knowing what to say, not because she was shy, but because she had no idea what this guy was like. "Want to swing?" He was easy to read, which just made it easier for Evie. If she didn't like him, she could possibly just leave, but starting a friendship wouldn't be a bad idea. Without waiting for him, Evie made her way back or to the swings. It was a few hours till sundown, and Evie dreaded going back. There was no way she could tell them she had two matches, and since she met Augustus first, she would just tell them he was the one. He also was the one to show on the show on the screen first.
(Sorry its short.)
(Oh my goodness I love Gus and I want to protect him. He's amazing!)
Caspian walked along the sidewalk, his head bowed, music blaring through the earphones in his ears. He probably shouldn't turn his music so loud, but he really didn't care. Best to enjoy what he had while he was still young.
He was walking a familiar route along the park, where he often walked, to escape his parents, and his house, and responsibilities. It was calming, and this way, he got to know his way around pretty well. A hike was going to be arranged soon, and he hoped that he could sign up. A change of scenery would be nice.
As he walked past a swing, he happened to glance up, and his cold eyes met a familiar pair of brown ones. He froze for an instant. It was her. Just his luck. He would probably have to talk to her. He made a face at the thought, and was rescued by a very awkward guy around Cas's age. After Everest's attention was diverted, he let out a breath of relief and ran his hands through his hair. He continued to walk, moving quickly away from the two.
(I think its decided, Gus and Cas fall in love, haha)
(I dunno… I think Cas is such an ass that he deserves to die alone. Plus, Evie needs someone to take care of her, and Gus is the best for the job XD)
(It probably won't happen, but I'm flattered that you think my character is good enough to be paired with Misfit's XD)
(Talk about a plot twist XD. And— yes. Gus is a very soft-hearted, awkward lil' fella. Ah… some days I relate to him more than I'd like to admit. He's me if I were sane and, you know, actually endearing. Also my reply's a bit wonky. It's 1:00 AM here.)
"Sure," Gus managed to squeak out a response before mustering up the strength and self-control to follow her back over to the swings. His heart was thumping so hard that he could hear it. The revelation of having received his match was enough excitement for one day, but meeting his match on the same day? Within hours? That was far too much for a guy like Gus to handle. He was thoroughly unprepared. What would he say? What would she say? What happens next, if they're soulmates and they both know it? He wasn't sure how any of this worked. It's not like he ever actually expected to match with anyone.
He hesitantly sat down in one of the empty swings, his mind reeling. He needed to say something before he made himself look like a total oddball. But what could he say? Introductions were out. They already knew each other's names. And Gus thought it'd be a little odd if he just started spewing out facts about himself. How the heck was he supposed to come across as engaging without being clingy? How the heck was he supposed to take it slow without seeming too detached?
Gus's eyes might've temporarily scanned over another boy about his age not far off, but he didn't think anything of it. He was too busy having an internal anxiety attack about how to go about this without screwing everything up right off the bat.
He swallowed hard, daring to glance over at Everest. He wasn't sure how long was appropriate to look at her without seeming like one of those pervy creeps who stared at people, so he looked back down at the ground after a few seconds and lightly pushed his feet against the dirt to move his swing just a tad. "So… um… your name's Everest, then? That's a pretty unique name." That wasn't too stupid, right? Or was everything that came out of his mouth already stupid to begin with?
