The armies slowly marched towards the battle point. Sadie and Ambrose were both in the front lines, and although they were quite a distance from each other, if they squinted they would be able to see the other.
Ambrose indeed squinted, anxious to catch sight of his lover. When he did, his heart leapt in his chest for a brief second before he remembered they were meant to battle each other…what if she was hurt? By him or anyone else?
"What time is it?" Sadie asked the captain.
"Almost high noon."
"Thank you."
Ambrose took in shaky breaths to steady himself. If he could avoid her, he wouldn’t have to worry about himself hurting her at least.
Sadie turned to face her army. "My men! At high noon, we charge! Do this for the good of Laveria! You will be known in our kingdom as warriors!" A cheer went up throughout the army.
Ambrose gripped his horse’s reins tighter. He was never much of a public speaker, especially in this situation, so Vincent yelled back to rally their troops, “High noon is approaching! The time to fight for Astoria is now!! If you give this battle your all, we will return home as heroes! We will to live to love another day!”
She turned back to face the opposite army, heart beating in her chest. She leaned forward and stroked her horse's face from her forehead to her muzzle. "It's OK, Chestnut. We'll get through this. I promise."
Ambrose pulled his sword out if it’s sheathe, “We’ll charge first, Vincent.”
Vincent nodded, “Yes, sir..I’m ready. We’re all ready.”
Chestnut neighed softly, shaking her head a little bit. Sadie smiled sadly down at her, knowing that the horse might perish today during this battle. That broke her heart more than the possibility of fighting Ambrose.
At last, Ambrose looked up at the sky and sighed heavily trough his nose. High noon… he reached to pull his helmet guard down over his face.
There were no other seconds that he had dreaded, or will ever dread, than these moments now. Until finally he mustered enough breath to call to his men, “Attack!!”
Ambrose and the army pounded against the earth towards their enemy, nearly all of them leaning against their horses in anxiousness to collide into battle. Some of them trailed behind a second slower.
As the Astorian army charged, the horsemen's horses reared on their hind legs and started to gallop towards them. Sadie gripped her sword in her hand and could almost feel the engravings on them through her armour. For you, Father. She thought.
Vincent rode just past Ambrose to collide into the Laverian captain, their swords loudly crashing against each other in a hideous clang.
Sadie saw Abrose coming up and turned Chestnut to the right slightly, riding straight past him. She knew she would have to fight him eventually, but she would put that off as long as she could.
Ambrose turned his head and briefly just in time to glance at Sadie. She moved away, that was good, that was good. He refocused himself right as a laverian soldier raised a weapon against him. Ambrose threw up his own to block it. But the adrenaline shook his focus for a solid three seconds.
Sadie blinded soldiers by reflecting light from her hand off her armour, then hit them with her sword. She didn't injure them, rather stun them and knock them to the ground.
Ambrose ducked close to his horse to dodge another swinging sword. From there he could see a convenient opening where he could slice an opposing soldier’s vulnerable arm; a fault in joint from the arm and the elbow. He took the chance.
