Gray was careful not to let his hurt flash on his face when Violeta pulled away from him. Instead, he just nodded.

“Don’t get the punch from the bowl,” he said to her. “It’s spiked.”

@blue_topaz

Violeta nodded hastily and turned away, pulling Irene after her as she wove through the thick crowd. "What's wrong with me?" she asked her friend, slumping against the wall of the miniature safe haven. "What on earth is wrong with me? He's been mocking me for years, I shouldn't–I shouldn't feel flustered."

Meanwhile, Rae was giving Gray a meaningful look, folding her arms. "You're not trying to deflower our girl, are you?"

Deleted user

Gray blinked at Rae, tilting his head to the side as a vacant look entered his eyes.

“If I wanted to, I would have done that a long time ago,” he answered quietly. “So no, I’m not trying to deflower your girl.”

@blue_topaz

"Good," she muttered, pushing a hand over her short, almost buzzed hair. "Why haven't you asked her out yet, pretty boy?"

Back in the kitchen, Irene gave a quiet laugh, snatching two plastic cups off the counter. "How many times do we have to tell you that he doesn't hate you? Even Josh said it, for god's sake!"

"But he does," she insisted, "He's hopelessly confusing sometimes, but in the long run, he just wants to watch me break."

Deleted user

“She hates me,” Gray said bluntly, shrugging as if it wasn't a big deal. “Besides, doesn’t she like that kid, Josh?”

Gray knew that if Laura were here, she would have whacked him over the head. He could practically feel the hit.

@blue_topaz

Irene sighed through her nose, clearly exasperated. Water sloshed from the sink and into the plastic cups, as if punctuating the silent chastising I knew she was giving me.

"Pretty sure she doesn't hate you," Sadie butted in, shrugging. "But do what you want. Now, are you going to dance with us or not?"

Deleted user

“Depends on what kind of dance you’re talking about,” Gray chuckled, shaking his head. “But no, I’m not. I have someone I need to find, so I’ll be taking my leave.”

@blue_topaz

"Flowers," Lillian told him right before he left. "She likes flowers, Have a nice night, Gray."

"You are the single most oblivious person I've ever met." Irene pressed the cup into Violeta's hands, frowning. "C'mon, Vi, at least wait and see. If you don't like Josh, that is. Do you like Josh?"

I gave a helpless shrug. "I don't know. Maybe. He's cute and doesn't hate me."

Deleted user

(Gray is hot and he loves you.)

Gray paused, looking back at Lillian before a sincere smile made its way to his lips.

“Flowers,” he repeated, chuckling softly. Of course she would like flowers. “Thank you, Lillian.”

@blue_topaz

(lmao)

Lillian gave him a one-shouldered shrug and turned away, calling a word of warning over her shoulder. "If you break your heart, you're done for. Tread carefully, pretty boy."

Irene sighed. "And you've had, what, four conversations with him? You've known Gray for four years?"

Deleted user

“I’ll gladly let you run me over with a truck if I do,” Gray answered back. “Though you’ll be deeply disappointed because that’ll never happen!”

@blue_topaz

All three girls laughed, shaking their heads as they watched him go. "Poor, oblivious Vy.." Rae grinned wickedly. "And she thinks he hates her. Alright, ladies, we need a plan. How are we going to get these lovestruck idiots together?"

Deleted user

It took quite a while to find Laura, but once he did, Gray was fuming.

“You!” He pointed at the lone girl who sipped her drink calmly. “You left me alone there. Why?”

Laura merely grinned.

“Why do you think, you idiot?”

@blue_topaz

Violeta and Irene returned to the group, who had gone back to laughing and dancing as Demons, by Imagine Dragons, came on.

The group laughed and jumped around for a while, just being careless and having fun, but they got tired eventually and went to sit down near the giant table of food at the back.

Rae tossed a beer in Lillian’a direction, knowing that neither of the other girl’s liked to drink much. They just sat there for a while, grinning while they caugh their breaths—until a group of very intoxicated guys closed in.

Gray would have continued arguing with Laura when he caught sight of Violeta and her group of friends with some other guys. At first, jealousy rose up again. But then he noticed that the girls did not want their company. Laura followed his gaze and sighed heavily. Before she could say something, Gray was already making his way towards the group.

Laura followed after him, naturally.

@blue_topaz

“Heyyyyyy, Violeta,” one of the guys, a tall freshman named Drew, slurred. He leaned forward, dropping a can of beer in her lap. “Have a drink with me?”

Violeta went rigid, carefully picking the beer off her lap and setting it down on the table. “No, thank you.”

Arjun, one of Drew’s friends, made a pouty face. “Aww… why not? It’ll be funnn! Please?”

The guys all stepped closer.

“I think the lady already gave her answer,” Gray clipped rather coldly, a warning look on his features though there was a smile on his face. He stood behind Violeta protectively, daring them to make a move. “So it’s best you take your leave.”

Laura grinned from behind him, battling her eyelashes and blowing on her red nails. “I’d agree if I were you. My friend here dislikes it when people bother people that are important to him.”

Gray let that comment slide. Just this once.

@blue_topaz

Gray again.

Violeta’s grip on her chair tightened as her eyes slid from him to his pink-haired companion. What was she talking about? Was she in on his stupid game, too?

But despite who had come to the rescue, she felt a surge of relief when the guys backed off, muttering among themselves.

Gray released a breath, his eyes going back to Violeta as her grip on her chair loosened a little. Laura grinned, raking her hair back with her fingers.

“Wow, Gray,” she purred, bumping her shoulder with his. “I swear, you look so hot when you’re being protective. You’d make a wonderful boyfriend~”

Gray shot her a smoldering glare as if he knew what she was doing. Laura merely shot a smirk his way.

@blue_topaz

Violeta forced her gaze away from the ridiculously pretty girl, staring down at her lap. “Thank you,” she told Gray in a flat but controlled tone, completely ignoring the girl’s statement.

Deleted user

Gray rolled his eyes at Laura, who smiled back apologetically. She didn’t look apologetic in the slightest.

“The next time someone does that to you, don’t hesitate to throw a punch,” Gray said, already stepping away. She was beginning to feel uncomfortable. “You’re nice, so people tend to take advantage of that. Have fun for the rest of the day, Violeta.” Gray turned around to walk away, but Laura stayed behind.

“He’s a bit moody right now, but trust me, he’s just a little—“

”Laura. Come on.”

Laura offered a shrug before smiling brightly at Violeta. “I like your dress,” she said sincerely. “I think you’re beautiful. Pure and simple, but really beautiful. Have a good day, Violeta~”

And the pink-haired girl ran after Gray, dodging people and punching her friend once she reached him.

@blue_topaz

Violeta didn’t really know what to say after that. She just sort of… sat there, silent, staring after thevpair with bafflement etched into her features.

“Well…” Sadie muttered, “That was interesting.”

Deleted user

“What was that?” Gray whirled on his friend, narrowing his eyes. “‘People important to him?’ You might just go announce to her that I’m head-over-heels for her!”

Laura just looked at him in disbelief.

“I did you a favor,” she exclaimed. “Would you have done anything else? I’m trying to help you!”

“Well, I don’t need your help,” Gray shot back, regretting his words immediately when hurt flashed across her face. “I never asked for it.”

“Yeah, why would you?” She muttered. “I forgot we’re just here in case we need release. I’m sorry, Grayson, that I tried to help you with your goddamn love life. I’m sorry that I tried to be a friend.”

“I’m sorry,” Gray shook his head. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“You know what, Gray?” Laura breathed, crossing her arms over her chest. “When you learn to accept people, then come and apologize. You like that girl, but you’re so afraid you don’t even try getting her to like you. And when there’s an actual person who wants to be your friend, you push them away.” She paused, shaking her head. “Forget it.”

So Laura turned on her heels (no pun intended) and walked away.

[TIME SKIP - Monday morning]

Violeta thumbed through her notes, occasionally scratching out or adding to the nearly printed lines of script. Occasionally, she would glance towards Gray, who hadn’t said a word all morning, but left him in peace for the most part. Finally, about fifteen minutes to the end of class, she cleared her throat awkwardly. “So… are we going to work on the project or not?”

Deleted user

Gray’s weekend went by miserably, and really, it was Laura that caused it. Gray knew she was right, and that bugged him off. So much. He hated how she knew exactly what he never let himself believe. It infuriated him. She should have known Gray felt comfortable around her, yet she walked away from him.

Like they were just strangers.

He was furious.

And then Violeta spoke and it was so hard to keep in the snap. Gray merely took out his laptop in response, turning it on and typing (smashing) in the password. He opened up a Google Document for them to write in their outline.

“All the notes good?” He asked rather harshly, not bothering to filter his emotions.
