Kallie was standing by her locker, waiting for Atlas, so they could walk home together, like they had been for a while.
Atlas wandered down the hall, with an occupied look on his face. His Afghan father had been up his back lately and Atlas wouldn't say what for– only that it was annoying the hell out of him.
Kallie noticed him and beamed. "Atlas!" She waved.
"Hey," he replied in an exasperated breath. He kept shifting his weight. "Whatsup?"
"I was waiting for you. You know… we walk home together… What's wrong?" she asked, noting his expression.
He pursed his lips, and replied defensively, "Nothing, I'm fine," which roughly translated to "Dear God, I'm about to slit my own throat".
She looked worried. "Why won't you tell me what's wrong?"
He rubbed his nose, and mumbled something.
"Hmm?" she hummed gently. "What?"
"My dad wants me to ask you out." He mumbled. "On a date."
She looked a little shocked. "Oh. Do… Do you not want to?" Stay calm…
"I do," he replied semi-defensively, "I've. I've never. Done that. Before,"
"It's not that hard," she encouraged.
"It is for me," he muttered.
"Do you need help?"
He laughed nervously. "How would you help?"
"If you want, I can tell you what to say," she suggested.
"Okay," he allowed in a whisper.
"So, uh, you start out by saying something like… uh, you're nice or something." She blushed. "I watch a lot of movies…"
"Well," he breathed, "You look nice. You're pretty cool." He struggled. "Want to see a movie?"
She nodded shyly. "Sure, that would be fun!"
He laughed nervously, "Good, cool,"
