"Are you helping out of free will?" he asked suddenly.
"Are you helping out of free will?" he asked suddenly.
Hunter gave him a look that could freeze fire, that also said, "are you really this dumb?" She rolled her eyes. "Yes, of course. It's why I have such a joyful personality."
"I merely ask because I want to h…." he trailed off, and took a steady breath before continuing. "Am I here to learn something about myself? Or am I here to help you learn something about you?" His voice was steady and calm, though he realized he was probably pushing against a door that did not want to open.
Kid are you sure this is smart?
Never sure, but I feel like I did something wrong ad I want to try and fix it.
Just be mindful of what you say and or do. Words are powerful, they can build or destroy. So be careful how you use them.
Hunter shrugged. "I have no fucking idea, so don't ask me. Probably not going to do with me, don't worry. You'll be able to leave and forget about this place" and me, was what she didn't say, "and then life will go back to normal. Or something." She rolled her eyes and pulled her boots off, throwing herself onto the chest.
"I never forget a place," Kye's voice lowered to barely hearable. "I just do not always get to go back." He turned and started walking towards the stairs.
"That's the problem," she muttered, so quietly that no one could have heard, unless they had superhearing. She flopped down onto the bed and attempted to sleep for all of about three seconds before standing and moving to the window. She never slept well in this world. She slung her legs over the sill and sat on the ledge, glaring at the stars.
Kye was siting on the floor of the room that Hunter had pointed him to. Not on the bed, just sitting on the middle of the floor. He'd snapped his rib back into place and was unwrapping his hands. Oddly enough he was humming something to himself. A slow sad tune that his mother had taught him when he was very little. A purple figure appeared next to him and tipped it's head. "What's wrong?" it asked quietly.
"I am not sure…" Kye sighed not seeming surprised by the figure's appearance. "I feel like I did something wrong, but I am not sure what that was. And this young lady seems…"
"Hurt." The figure answered for him.
"Yeah. She seems hurt, and I think it is because of my presence. That comment she made, about me leaving and forgetting about this place. I feel like she is trying not to get her hopes up," Kye explained. His voice low but not whispering.
"You know, you have an uncanny ability to get put into the right places at the right time. I don't know how or why, but you do. And while you are not a certified healer like Tolkalee or Jake, you have an even better healing power. You have the ability to heal people in their soul. Your willingness to help and listen and just flat out be there for people is more effective than you think it is. So while it may not look like it right now, I think you're here to do more than just learn about yourself. Just keep going, and don't die." And with that the figure disappeared.
Hunter sighed. "Stupid place," she muttered. She climbed back into the room and lay down on the bed. Faintly, she could hear humming coming through the floorboards above, and voices. Sighing, she flopped onto her side and drifted into a light sleep.
When she woke up, the sky was still dark, and she yawned, stretching slightly, before remembering where she was and groaning, falling back onto the bed. She stared at the ceiling, seeing the cracks of moonlight spilling through the windows onto the floor.
Standing, she stretched, joints popping, before moving to the chest and opening it. She pulled out a pair of boots with soft leather soles, and a few knives. As she was grabbing them, a fait silver gleamed momentarily around her neck before disappearing again. She knocked on the new guy's door – she still didn't know his name – and called, "Hey! Sleeping Beauty! Time to go!"
Kye opened the door already completely ready to go. He had his sweatshirt on again. But instead of having his hands wrapped, he was wearing a pair of fingerless gloves. ""Sorry I am running a little bit behind," he apologized. "Turns out getting ready while sore takes a little longer." He gave a half smile to her and he stood in front of her. He was only a little bit taller than she was, maybe only by two inches. He looked at her hair, and noted the brown streaks through it. He also noted her eye color almost matching his hair color. She was kinda cute.
…..What did I just think?
Someone's got a crush.
No I do not. I met her last night I do not even know her name.
Uh huh, you keep telling yourself that, we'll see where that gets you in a few days.
(……………. starts screaming)
She pursed her lips. "Fine. We need to leave soon." She was unconscious of the way his eyes watched her. She was already dreading what was going to happen next. Who they were going to see. What was going to happen. "Do you need any supplies?" She asked, her voice calm and cool. "Otherwise, we'll just be passing by the village. Today's market day." She wiped a stray strand of her hair from her face. She really needed to re-braid it.
Kye nodded, and looked away. "The only things I need I can pick up along the way," he explained. "We should get going, that way you do not have to put up with me any longer than you have to." He sounded almost sad as he stepped carefully past her. " I do not want to get in your way."
She gaped in surprise. Was he actually being nice to her? And wanting to leave soon? Typical. She composed herself. "Fine. Let's go." She went downstairs, throwing on a jacket and slinging a bag over her shoulder. “Let's go!" She called over her shoulder, moving to the window and giving a shrill whistle.
Kye followed her outside and winced slightly at the loud high pitched whistle. He tightened the bag that he had around his shoulders. Just so that when and if they had to start moving quickly, he wouldn't need to worry about losing his bag. She'd reacted to his kindness. It wasn't much of a reaction and she covered it up fast, but he'd seen it. Which just proved that his nature could help out here.
Told you that you had a knack for getting put in the right places with the right people.
Yeah, shut up.
She didn't even glance at him as he followed, oblivious to the conversation he was having with Gelion.
A sleek, tan creature the size of a cow swooped in through the large window, feathers on its wings gleaming. It was a griffin, and a beautiful one at that. Hunter tied her bag to the griffin's neck, stroking it slightly before swinging herself onto its warm back. She held out a hand to the she still didn't know the name of. "You coming?"
Kye stared at the griffin for a moment before looking at Hunter. Something completely unreadable on his face.
Oh boy.
Oh boy.
I feel like she wants to kill us.
Well considering how she treated me when I got here, I would not be surprised. But survive and prevail.
But this is a griffin. You know, part of the mythical flyers family. You do know that all mythical flyers have heard about things that happen in other dimensions right?
I know, which probably means that this griffin knows about the dragon incident, but we do not have time to think about it we gotta go.
He gave Hunter a slight smile, that looked completely forced, before taking her hand and climbing onto the griffins back. He shifted once on the griffin. Settling in like he were on a horse. Something he'd never been very good at.
(… the dragon incident?)
Hunter glanced back at him, then clicked her tongue, and the creature launched itself into the air. It flew smoothly, quickly gaining height. "I hope you're not afraid of heights," Hunter commented, her voice somehow lighter now that she was away from the ground.
(More on that in a bit.)
Kye chewed his lip as they took off, and forced himself to not tense up. "Unfortunately ma'am, I would happen to have a fear of heights. But I will manage," he managed as they left the ground. "Where are we headed?"
(I feel like I should be worried but it sounds… interesting XD)
She let a quiet breath hiss from her teeth. Of course he was. Just her luck. "The Tanamaar Caverns," she said, lips pursed. "You wouldn't have heard of them." She pointed in the direction they were flying. "There they are." The mountains rose in the distance, tall and craggy and spooky. Her body tightened at the thought of going underground again, but she did her best to ignore it. "Falin can only fly for a few hours at a time, so we'll be stopping a lot. We'll get there by nightfall tomorrow."
Kye nodded noting how she tensed when she talked about the caverns they were headed to. Thinking back he remembered how much she'd relaxed after they got out of the cave she'd found him in.
She does not fancy caves very much.
No, I'm betting it is for the same reason you don't like heights.
I do not like heights because I was dropped out of the sky by a dragon.
And maybe she doesn't like caves because of some big bady down in a cave somewhere.
I guess. But caves are different than heights. There is so much more to caves.
Than show her, when you get there. You know how.
No I do not! I barely know how to talk to her. Most of the situations I have been in are situations that are me trying to explain to a ruler of a land why they should not invade their neighboring kingdom. Or I am in the middle of a huge war. I do not know how to do anything here!
Yes you do. I've seen you do it before. Think about it… Who did you meet in the Underlands?
Gwen, but she is like a little sister to me. That whole situation was different. I understood her pain. I do not understand any of what this young lady has gone through.
I'm not changing my answer. You know what you're doing whether you think you do or not.
Hunter turned slightly to him. "We'll be stopping in a few hours. When we get to the mountains, you cannot speak until I allow you to. There are dangerous things living in the mountains, and it is better that you don't disturb them."
When they stopped for a rest, she slid from Falin's back quickly and stretched slightly, working off the cramps in her limbs and wanting to get away from the guy behind her soon as possible. She still didn't know his name. after scanning the area quickly, she untied her bag and threw herself against a tree, sitting down and pulling a knife from her bag. She pulled her left sleeve up and jerked the small blade against her arm, blood welling up. She wiped the blood off the knife and wrapped the wound, hiding the hundreds of other small scars of the same type from view.
Kye slid not so gracefully off of the griffin, but managed to land on his feet. He glanced at Hunter and noticed the wrap, but didn't comment on it. He looked around them noting everything around them. He was a lot more comfortable now that they were on the ground but not as comfortable as he would have been if they were in a cave. He was counting his blessings though. "How long have you been here?" he asked kind of quietly.
Didn't she say no talking?
She said that for at the mountains. We are not at the mountains yet.
"Where? In this particular spot, in this specific land? I've been in this particular spot exactly fourteen seconds, and I've been in this land about a day and a half. Well, this time, at least." She didn't even glance at him. She wasn't about to explain all the years she had been forced to serve here, to help others in their quests, and how she still hadn't been everywhere. Frankly, it would take too long, and she wasn't sure she wanted to share that with a complete stranger. "So, Mr. Caveboy, how long have you been in caves?"
"My whole life practically," Kye explained. "The first time was a joke pulled on me. Or at least that is what they told me. I am pretty sure however, it was it was an attempt to get rid of me. Anyways to answer your question I have been traversing caves since I was 7."
She gave a (slightly) impressed whistle. "That long, huh?" She shook her head. She'd never be able to survive that long in one. "And you're what, 23 now?"
Kye gave a half laugh. "No, I only look the part," he chuckled. "I have been around just a bit longer than that however."
