“Well—“ Aurelie began but was cut off by noticing her father walking in, followed by a frantic Eli. He was walking not towards them, but to where he usually made announcements when the palace was crowded.
Cat held Aurelie’s hand again standing close to her. She kept her eyes on the king.
Aurelie held Cat’s hand as if it were a life raft. Her gaze followed her father as well.
He cleared his throat before speaking. “As many of you know, my daughter, Princess Aurelie, was cursed to fall asleep on her eighteenth birthday and be awoken by true love’s kiss. I promised that whoever woke her would get to marry her, and so since Princess Aurelie is now awake, I would like her to come up here. As well as the one whose kiss broke the spell.” Aurelie glanced at Cat nervously.
Cat tried to keep a straight facs as she started walking still gripping Aurelie’s hand. She glanced around but then locked her eyes on the king. Staring up at him with an emotionless face.
Aurelie gulped, used to seeing people staring at her but feeling unprepared. Cat’s hand in hers gave her strength, and her father was giving her hope.
“What is your name, my dear?” the king asked Cat once they made it to the front. The tone with which he spoke was carefully neutral.
Cat looked at the crowd then at the king. “Caterina Ricci your highness,” she said with a half bow. She kept her hand clenched around Aurelie’s and stayed close.
The king nodded. “Well, congratulations, you two,” he said stiffly. “We’ll have to begin planning the wedding.” Was Aurelie’s father really happy for her? It seemed somewhat fake, though she couldn’t tell why he would pretend to be okay with her and Cat’s engagement.
Cat tried to smile but it was weak. She knee something was off about this. She stood even closer to Aurelie slightly in front of her.
“That is all,” added the king, flicking his wrist to indicate everyone was dismissed. Then he walked quickly away before Aurelie could talk to him. She turned to Cat.
“That was weird…” she mumbled.
Cat nodded in agreement. “Yeah…do you think he wants to talk to us?” She asked biting her lip.
“I think he would have said something to me if so, but maybe he just thought he did…?” she asked, nervous.
“Should we follow him or…” she looks at where he exited.
“Umm, yeah, that might be a good idea,” Aurelie mumbled, setting her lips in a determined line.
Cat nodded holding her hand as she walked off the stage and towards where she saw the king walk. she made her face emotionless again.
Aurelie wondered if this was a good idea, but at least she would know how her father was feeling. She walked with Cat, spotting her father and glancing to Cat for support.
Cat walked up to the king hoping he noticed them before she had to say anything.
