“Magic is not just illegal. It was drained. It is gone. I do not know how, only that it is, as are the magical creatures. Pegasi, Griffins, Selkies, Kelpies, Unicorns. Dragons. All of them. All gone, taking the magic with them. And yet somehow you have it. Wild, unfettered, and untaught magic. The purest and rarest form of magic. This should not be possible.”

Fio Ruen came to Westrun, the capital of Kevra, to live. His mother, afraid of what would happen if the young man remained in his small town, had sent him to live with the head physician of the king. Fio is to be his apprentice. He can use magic, but only sometimes, and on instinct alone, not through spells.

20 years ago, magic and magical creatures were eradicated by that king. King Ryemor the Dragonslayer, as he is known, was the one to do it. He declared magic illegal, saying that anyone caught doing it would be killed without a trial. Any magical creatures would be killed, and if someone was harboring a magical creature, they too will be killed.

And Fio is harboring a dangerous secret, one that not even he knows: he is the Last Dragon, the only one of his kind left in the world. He is in human form, and he doesn’t know. He meets the prince, the son of King Ryemor, and the two clash at first, fighting and arguing, and then, after Fio saves the Prince’s life, the two begin to become friends, which slowly blossoms into something more.

But, when Fio’s identity comes to light, the two will face struggles as the Prince must grapple with everything he’s been taught about dragons and magical creatures, and Fio must decide where his loyalties lie.

"Um, guys?" Angel scrunched her brow at her phone as she called to the rest of the house. The other two members of her team came running immediately. She was on the couch in the living room and had been listening to a particular news broadcast for the third time, gently petting Paju the snowy owl with one hand while he perched on her leg and picked through the small container of insects she held with the other.
She didn't think Bulldozer deserved to be murdered, though she wasn't a big fan of him - none of the team were, really; he was on the good guys' side but he wasn't a good guy. Scummy was the word Bailey liked to use. Speaking of Bailey, the energetic redhead vaulted over the back of the couch to sit next to Angel, making Paju squawk in warning as the motion shook him a bit.
"What's up?" Angel handed over the phone, showing them the text she'd just gotten from one of their friends. Attached was a somewhat blurry picture followed by another, less blurry picture, both of the guy who'd apparently jumped off a building and survived, then jumped right up and greeted the crowd like nothing was wrong. "Well, he's certainly resilient," Noah commented, narrowing his eyes as he read the text under the pictures. "Some chick just came and grabbed him and took him away, saying he's her brother, which I don't exactly believe but it's not like I'd know. Any of you at Home happen to recognize the guy?" After getting confirmation from her friends, including Paju, Angel responded, "No, sorry. But if he survived a fall from a building that means he has to have some sort of ability, which means he could be a hero or a villain, same for whoever it was that took him away. So maybe keep your distance?"
"Well yeah, I wasn't gonna go spying on them. No need to worry but I appreciate it ^3^"
Angel tossed her phone to the side and picked up the remote to change the channel. "No more Bulldozer news?" Noah wondered aloud, and Angel shrugged. "Nah. But, Bailey, would you mind doing some research on Rip?"
"Sure thing, boss." Bailey happily left the couch the same way she entered - sporadically, over the back cushion - and headed upstairs to her bedroom. Noah watched her go, then took her spot on the couch.

(From a somewhat older one that kinda died. Is that too long?)

Fio walked through the streets of Westrun, headed for the palace. A letter was tucked inside his pocket, an introduction to the palace physician from his mother. He took a deep breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He showed the letter to a palace guard, who guided him to Caius' quarters. Fio knocked, waiting outside the door. He waited for about five minutes without an answer before he cautiously opened up the door, peeking inside. "Hello?" he called in a low voice, eyes flickering around the room. "Caius? Are you in here?" he went in, closing the door behind himself. There was an assortment of tables around the room, and large windows to let in the light. The tables were covered in diagrams, papers, books. There wasn't even an inch of clear space, seemingly.

"Caius?" he called again, stepping cautiously forward, peering curiously at the nearest pile of stuff on a table. He looked around again, and finally spotted an older man up in a loft. "Caius?" he raised his voice a little. Perhaps he's hard of hearing?

The old man turned. "Oh! And who are you?" he asked, frowning as he came down the stairs and over to Fio.

"Fio Ruen, sir. My mother sent me?" he held out the letter to Caius, giving the old man a cautious smile.

Caius frowned again, taking the letter without reading it. "Hm. You aren't due here until Friday."

Fio's smile flickered. "Uhm. It is Friday, sir."

Caius blinked, and shrugged. "Ah, so it is. Well." he put the letter in a pocket. "You can have the room in the loft. I was just cleaning it out. Go put your things away and get down here."

Fio nodded, and did as Caius had asked, climbing the stairs and heading into a small bedroom.

Demaias took a deep breath. He was making his way down one of the palace's long hallways, tailed by a light-haired young lady, as usual. He shut his eyes for a moment and tensed his fists, resisting the rising urge to shove her as she giggled and continued to question where he was going.
"Ooh, are you going to see a special lady friend?" She sang, wiggling her thin eyebrows in a way she knew her older brother hated.
"No, Miri. I don't even have a 'special lady friend.'"
But the girl persisted, nudging his arm and poking at him, so he grabbed her by the shoulders and looked her in the eyes, furrowing his brow. "Miriam, sweetie, leave me be."

Miriam pouted. "But you always disappear for hours after you and Papa's training sessions, and you never tell anyone where you're going! Are you sure you aren't sneaking out to go into the city?"

"No, I'm not." Demaias sighed. "I just like to be alone after training. To catch my breath and relax without Papa or anyone hovering over me for one thing or another." He leaned forward and pulled her into a tight hug. "Can you let me go do that? Please?"
Miriam clicked her tongue and returned the hug. When they released each other, Demaias patted her head and continued his trek down the hall, and Miriam watched him go.
Once Demaias was out of sight, he ducked under a loose window curtain and stepped into a thin tunnel that led out into the palace garden.

Fio took care of his stuff, putting them away carefully. He came back out of his room, and looked at Caius. "What do you want me to do now?"

"I'd like you to deliver this to Lord Harn." Caius held up a small bottle. "Be careful, he's nearly blind. Don't startle him. Come straight back when you're done."

Fio nodded, taking the bottle and slipping out into the hallways. He headed out to find this Lord Harn's room, humming softly. He glanced at the walls, and saw a pair of Pegasus wings, impaled and hung as trophies. Bile rose in his throat, the urge to be sick overwhelming. He swallowed, and hurried on, keeping his eyes fixed to the floor.

Exhaling a breath of relief, the prince scooted down a small dirt slope and brushed himself off. No-one else was in the garden, not that anyone in the palace visited nearly as often as he did. He started on the path through tall flowers and bushes and headed straight to the white gazebo at the garden's center.

There was a plate of food at the small table there, and he smiled. He didn't know who it was or how they found out about his somewhat secret routine, but someone from the palace had started leaving him treats and snacks every other day for his post-training cooldown. He sat in one of the cushioned seats and took a cookie from the tray, taking a bite with one hand and rubbing his sore arm with the other.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Fio kept moving, delivering the medicine to Lord Harn. He headed back to Caius, and was relieved to see that their were no trophies made from the body parts of mystical creatures in the old man's rooms. He swallowed. "Now what?" he asked.

Caius waved a hand. "Go entertain yourself. Stay out of trouble, though. Try the gardens. Those are usually peaceful."

Fio nodded, heading out to the gardens. He relaxed a little bit when he reached it. Or at least, he tried to. It became impossible when he saw the unicorn horns that were used as posts, decorations, saw the way that fairy dust had been used to create a sparkle. That bile rose in his throat again, and he leaned on a column to steady himself.

Demaias ate a few more cookies, as well as half of a sandwich when he noticed another figure through the foliage near the gazebo. He rolled his eyes, a little annoyed that someone else was there now, but the garden was open to anyone living in the palace so he couldn't be too bothered by it. What did bother him, when he looked closer, was that whoever it was seemed to be in some kind of pain, holding themselves against one of the marble columns as if they were going to fall.

He took the teacup and the other half of the sandwich from the tray and held them in a napkin, then made his way over.
"Excuse me?" Demaias said quietly once he was close enough. He rounded the column and stood a few feet away. "Are you alright?"

@ElderGod-Icefire

Fio jumped at the voice, turning to see Demaias. "Fine, I'm fine." He said quickly, rubbing his face. He wasn't sure why the sight of the "trophies" from the magical creatures made him so sick to his stomach. He just knew that they did. He swallowed hard. "Just, uhm… little bit of a stomach bug, I-I guess." He knew that if he explained the real reason, he'd be killed for it. As a traitor and magic empathizer. And he didn't want to die. "It's nothing." It was painfully obvious that he didn't know who Demaias was, nor the fact that he should have bowed and said "your highness".

@TinyMagicWolf pets

Demaias nodded slightly, unsure that a stomach bug was "nothing." He tilted his head a bit and narrowed his eyes for just a moment; this young man must have just moved into the palace - no-one from the city was stupid enough to sneak into the palace garden and allow themselves to get caught like this. It was also apparent that he hadn't been informed as to what the prince looked like, for he did not bow or show any sort of formality. Not that Demaias cared that much.
Nonetheless, he held out the teacup and grinned. "Try this."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Fio took the teacup and hesitantly took a sip. "Oh. Thanks." He said softly, looking up at Demaias. He ran a hand through his soft black hair, biting his lip a little bit. "I'm sorry if I disturbed you. I… didn't mean to. Caius told me to come out here." He knew that anyone who lived in the palace would recognize the name of the palace physician. Or at least, he hoped so. He wanted to explain his presence so he didn't get in trouble.

@TinyMagicWolf pets

"I see." Demaias glanced at the palace, toward one of the windows of the old man's quarters. Caius had always been one of his favorite people, and he'd been visiting his office more often, lately. "May I ask why he told you that? If he gave you a reason, of course; that man has a tendency to give rather vague instructions."

@ElderGod-Icefire

He shrugged. "He said to entertain myself, and suggested the gardens." He replied, glancing up at the palace as well, then at Demaias again. "I'm Fio Ruen, by the way. What about you?" Now it was very obvious that he had no idea who Demaias was. He smiled at the prince.

@TinyMagicWolf pets

"Demaias Mallum." He put one hand over his chest and bent his figure slightly in a curt bow, looking up at Fio and smirking. "The prince of Westrun. Nice to meet you, Fio."
