“Magic is not just illegal. It was drained. It is gone. I do not know how, only that it is, as are the magical creatures. Pegasi, Griffins, Selkies, Kelpies, Unicorns. Dragons. All of them. All gone, taking the magic with them. And yet somehow you have it. Wild, unfettered, and untaught magic. The purest and rarest form of magic. This should not be possible.”

Fio Ruen came to Westrun, the capital of Kevra, to live. His mother, afraid of what would happen if the young man remained in his small town, had sent him to live with the head physician of the king. Fio is to be his apprentice. He can use magic, but only sometimes, and on instinct alone, not through spells.

20 years ago, magic and magical creatures were eradicated by that king. King Ryemor the Dragonslayer, as he is known, was the one to do it. He declared magic illegal, saying that anyone caught doing it would be killed without a trial. Any magical creatures would be killed, and if someone was harboring a magical creature, they too will be killed.

And Fio is harboring a dangerous secret, one that not even he knows: he is the Last Dragon, the only one of his kind left in the world. He is in human form, and he doesn’t know. He meets the prince, the son of King Ryemor, and the two clash at first, fighting and arguing, and then, after Fio saves the Prince’s life, the two begin to become friends, which slowly blossoms into something more.

But, when Fio’s identity comes to light, the two will face struggles as the Prince must grapple with everything he’s been taught about dragons and magical creatures, and Fio must decide where his loyalties lie.

Fio walked through the streets of Westrun, headed for the palace. A letter was tucked inside his pocket, an introduction to the palace physician from his mother. He took a deep breath, running a hand through his dark hair. He showed the letter to a palace guard, who guided him to Caius' quarters. Fio knocked, waiting outside the door. He waited for about five minutes without an answer before he cautiously opened up the door, peeking inside. "Hello?" he called in a low voice, eyes flickering around the room. "Caius? Are you in here?" he went in, closing the door behind himself. There was an assortment of tables around the room, and large windows to let in the light. The tables were covered in diagrams, papers, books. There wasn't even an inch of clear space, seemingly.

"Caius?" he called again, stepping cautiously forward, peering curiously at the nearest pile of stuff on a table. He looked around again, and finally spotted an older man up in a loft. "Caius?" he raised his voice a little. Perhaps he's hard of hearing?

The old man turned. "Oh! And who are you?" he asked, frowning as he came down the stairs and over to Fio.

"Fio Ruen, sir. My mother sent me?" he held out the letter to Caius, giving the old man a cautious smile.

Caius frowned again, taking the letter without reading it. "Hm. You aren't due here until Friday."

Fio's smile flickered. "Uhm. It is Friday, sir."

Caius blinked, and shrugged. "Ah, so it is. Well." he put the letter in a pocket. "You can have the room in the loft. I was just cleaning it out. Go put your things away and get down here."

Fio nodded, and did as Caius had asked, climbing the stairs and heading into a small bedroom.
