I could… Kyle looked back to Caleb with a slightly panicked look before back to the group with a determined expression. With a very slight flick of his wrist, a burst of ice shot out and towards the corner of the room, just enough to be a distraction.
Caleb’s eyes caught the motion and his gaze instantly hardened. “You idiot…” he whispered. The girl took advantage of the distraction and elbowed the nearest cop in the gut.
"Yup. I know." Kyle replied, sending another burst towards one of the cops.
“Do you want to get us all killed?!” He exclaimed, still refusing to step in. “If you keep doing this, they’re going to investigate us all.” The girl was actually a pretty good fighter, she wrapped her handcuffs around a cop’s windpipe, choking him while simultaneously using him as a body shield.
"Then run if you're scared," Kyle hissed, "You're not the one going to be killed for this since you're innocent!" He glared at Caleb before completely freezing one of the cops.
Ohhhh you better watch out now, you struck a nerve. “Oh you think I’m scared?! Let me tell you, those are some of the last words several people have said to me. You can guess what happened to all of them. I’m not scared, I’m being rational. If we cause a scene big enough, she’s going to have to deal with it.” The girl took out the last cop. Everyone could hear sirens in the distance.
"Then why doesn't everyone in here just get the hell out then!" Kyle said loudly, "I'm the one with the powers so if they get a hold of me, everyone here will be able to go free with no problems!"
Caleb opened his mouth to reply, probably yell something to be honest, when the cafe manager spoke up. “Okay people we all know the drill. The police came because we posted another ‘conspiracy’ they traced it back to her,” he pointed at the girl who the police had tried to take, “and we might all be at risk. So we have to pretend to be normal law-abiding citizens and wait for the rest of the cops. The story today is that this young lady took out the cops single-handedly, held me hostage until she escaped out the back door. Everyone got that?” There were collective noises of agreement from around the cafe. “You, take my car and get out of Anesia as fast as you can.” The girl nodded gratefully, accepting the car keys before making her exit.
Kyle frowned but calmed down and crossed his arms over his chest, keeping his head down. He probably just made everything worse and it was all his fault. Caleb was right, he should have just stayed out of it.
Caleb took a deep breath, still pretty pissed off. “You really don’t get how things work in this city do you?!” He exclaimed angrily.
"Just shut up Caleb," Kyle replied, shaking his head, "Once the cops are gone I'll leave you alone, got it? Just… shut up."
“Look that’s not it…” he sighed, really trying to calm down. “If they find out you did this, they’re going to take you. Not a trace of you will be left behind. I’ve seen it happen before. I’m not mad at you, I’m mad at the circumstances.”
"Maybe they should take me away," Kyle muttered, "I'm a monster anyway." He shrugged a shoulder and looked at the door, contemplating it.
“Kyle you aren’t a monster. Now come on, we have to get you out of here. We have about 5 minutes before the police show up and maybe only 2 if Electrica decides to show up.”
I am. But he nodded slowly, "Let's go then," He stood and looked to the manager, "Can we go out the back too?"
“Yeah, be careful you two. And Caleb for the love of God, try not to shoot people if they piss you off. At least not on my property.” Caleb rolled his eyes at the manager. “Come on, lets go Kyle.”
Kyle looked back at the front door for a moment, the urge to just give himself up stronger then ever. This was partly his fault for using his powers so why not hand himself over? but he didn't. Instead he followed Caleb out the back door and into the street wordlessly.
“As long as we can get you pretty far from the scene of the crime. You should be okay.” He paused, looking back at him. “Does the government know about your powers?”
Kyle shook his head, "No. They don't," Kyle couldn't bring himself to look at Caleb, "Why are you helping me?"
He shrugged, he really didn’t know why he was helping him. “Do you know why they tried to arrest that girl back there?”
Again, Kyle shook his head, "No, I don't. Do you because feel free to share."
“A few months ago, the government of Anesia put in a new policy, no one could say anything against the government. If you did, and they found out about it, you’d be arrested. There've been people that have been trying to expose the government’s flaws to the rest of the world ever since then. Most people would’ve just left, but the city’s pretty much on lockdown. We’re all stuck here.”
"Great. That's just fantastic," Kyle finally looked to Caleb, "You never answered my question, why are you helping me? You could have just let me there or let me turn myself in. It would have been better for you anyway."
“You’re right, it probably would’ve been better for me, but not better for my conscience that’s for sure.” He replied in that same calm voice from earlier.
Kyle shook his head a little, "You should have just left me to die." He whispered.
