Edonine pushed the flaps aside, "Fresh fruits, my sir!" She dropped the sack onto the ground before Pierre.
Pierre's hand snapped shut, hiding the precious object from view. "Where did you get these?" he managed to ask, though the slight quiver in his voice betrayed his sudden anxiety.
"There was a market passing through town. I had some money to spare," she sat down, picking out a pear to take a juicy bite from. "Mm. What's up with you?"
Pierre swallowed the hard lump that had been forming in his throat, reaching over to direct her chin sideways until their eyes met.
Pear juice drooled down her chin. An inquisitive look flared up in her yellowish-green eyes. "Pierre..?"
Swiping gently at the juice with his thumb, Pierre drew back.
"I–Edonine–" he tried to start, but his mouth went dry. Licking his lips, he began again. "How much do you think I love you?"
Her gaze searched his face for a moment. Her voice was muted, nervous, wondering if he was upset with her. "I-I think, you love me a lot," Edonine murmured.
Pierre laced the fingers of his free hand through hers. "Enough to do anything for you. Enough to trade my life for yours," he breathed, then inhaled deeply. "Enough to want to be with you…… for the rest of our lives."
Her free hand that was holding the pear went white-knuckled. "What are you saying..?"
"You changed my life," he continued, voice choked with emotion. "You saved it in more ways than one. I–I don't have a lot of money, Edonine. I can't provide for you as well as another man might be able to. But what I can promise is that I can love you more than anyone else alive on this earth."
Pierre opened his hand, exposing the golden band to the light. "Edonine—You are my world. Will you marry me?"
She dropped the fruit in the dirt, a strangled exclamation of surprise darting from her lips. The biggest smile spread across her face, stretched her freckled cheeks. "Pierre!"
He clasped her hand tightly, shifting until he was on one knee. "I beg of you, Edonine. Marry me."
"Oh," she breathed heavily. "Oh my gosh. Yes! Yes, I–" she suddenly realized how loud she was and promptly shushed her quivering voice, "Yes, I will marry you!"
A wide smile split Pierre's anxious expression. A hushed but exuberant laugh escaped his lips as his shoulders sagged. "Oh, thank goodness…" he breathed, slipping the ring onto her finger.
A little gasp radiated from Edonine, just from everything that was happening so suddenly. She curled her arms tightly around him.
Pierre crushed her in his embrace, tears beginning to roll down his cheeks. "Edonine—I can't believe–"
"Oh, you're crying!" She laughed a little, "Are you that happy?" Her voice had gone up several octaves with sheer joy.
"Yes—" he choked out, wiping furiously at his wet cheeks. "The woman I love more than life itself just agreed to marry me—of course I'm happy."
Edonine let out an effulgent giggle, and kissed him all over.
Pierre reached up and clasped her face in his hands, regarding her with wide-eyed wonder. "Am I dreaming?" he whispered, "Will I wake up tomorrow without this beautiful reality?"
She kissed his nose in the tenderest gesture. "Not one bit."
"Good," he said fiercely, voice thick with emotion. "God—I'm a mess, aren't I?"
"Following you," he grinned so widely, eyes twinkling.
(I'm sorry, I've been super busy this weekend!)
She giggled. "Why?"
That's ok!)
"Because I haven't seen you in months and I want to love you!" John giggled.
